Self-forming shim or gasket for mounting heavy equipment

Soft, cross-serrated aluminum shims are used as mating gaskets between uneven surfaces. Under pressure, the aluminum flows to conform with surface irregularities, forming a plane of uniform bearing

    Two-loop electroweak contributions to Δr\Delta r

A review is given on the quantum correction Δr\Delta r in the WW--ZZ mass correlation at the electroweak two-loop level, as derived from the calculation of the muon lifetime in the Standard Model. Exact results for Δr\Delta r and the WW-mass prediction including O(α2){\mathcal{O}}(\alpha^2) corrections with fermion loops are presented and compared with previous results of a next-to-leading order expansion in the top-quark mass.Comment: 14 pages, including 4 figures. Why understanding neutrino interactions is important for oscillation physics

Uncertainties in knowledge of neutrino interactions directly impact the ability to measure the parameters of neutrino oscillation. Experiments which make use of differing technologies and neutrino beams are sensitive to different uncertainties. Several experimental and theoretical issues are reviewed.Comment: Proceedings prepared for the Fifth International Workshop on Neutrino-Nucleus Interactions in the Few-GeV Region (NuInt07), May 30-June 2, 2007. A High-Resolution Rotation Curve of NGC 6822: A Test-case for Cold Dark Matter

We present high resolution rotation curves of the local group dwarf irregular galaxy NGC 6822 obtained with the Australia Telescope Compact Array. Our best curves have an angular resolution of 8'' or 20 pc and contain some 250 independent points. The stellar and gas components of NGC 6822 cannot explain the shape of the curve, except for the very inner regions, and NGC 6822 is consequently very dark matter dominated. There is no evidence for the presence of a steep density cusp down to scales of ~20 pc, contrary to the predictions of Cold Dark Matter.Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRA

The probability distribution of a trapped Brownian particle in plane shear flows

We investigate the statistical properties of an over-damped Brownian particle that is trapped by a harmonic potential and simultaneously exposed to a linear shear flow or to a plane Poiseuille flow. Its probability distribution is determined via the corresponding Smoluchowski equation, which is solved analytically for a linear shear flow. In the case of a plane Poiseuille flow, analytical approximations for the distribution are obtained by a perturbation analysis and they are substantiated by numerical results. There is a good agreement between the two approaches for a wide range of parameters.Comment: 5 pages, 4 figur

Isolated and non-isolated dwarfs in terms of modified Newtonian dynamics

    Get PDF
Within the framework of modified Newtonian dynamics (MOND) we investigate the kinematics of two dwarf spiral galaxies belonging to very different environments, namely KK 246 in the Local Void and Holmberg II in the M81 group. A mass model of the rotation curve of KK 246 is presented for the first time, and we show that its observed kinematics are consistent with MOND. We re-derive the outer rotation curve of Holmberg II, by modelling its HI data cube, and find that its inclination should be closer to face-on than previously derived. This implies that Holmberg II has a higher rotation velocity in its outer parts, which, although not very precisely constrained, is consistent with the MOND prediction.Comment: Accepted in A&A as a Research Note. 6 pages, 3 figure
