Discrimination: The Law vs. Morality
Terminology in racial literature is such that various behaviors are confused with one another making for less than rigorous analysis of racial problems. For some writers prejudice is used in a fashion signifying distaste for a particular race; others use the term suggesting the use of racial stereotypes; yet others use the term as a substitute for discrimination. Similar confusion surrounds the term segregation. Writers frequently refer to school segregation, meaning that few blacks in attendance at a predominantly white school but the same writers would never apply the term to an opera performance with few or no blacks in attendance. This paper seeks to give operational definitions to various terms used in the discussion of race in the hope that it will lead to more rigorous analysis and understanding of the issues and perhaps more effective social policies in the matter of race
A modified band approach for the accurate calculation of online photolysis rates in stratospheric-tropospheric Chemical Transport Models
International audienceHere we present an efficient and accurate method for the online calculation of photolysis rates relevant to both the stratosphere and troposphere for use in global Chemistry Transport Models and General Circulation Models. The method is a modified version of the band model introduced by Landgraf and Crutzen (1998) which has been updated to improve the performance of the approach for solar zenith angles >72° without the use of any implicit parameterisations. For this purpose, additional sets of band parameters have been defined for instances where the incident angle of the light beam is between 72?93°, in conjunction with a scaling component for the far UV region of the spectrum (?=178.6?202.0 nm). For incident angles between 85?93° we introduce a modification for pseudo-sphericity that improves the accuracy of the 2-stream approximation. We show that this modified version of the Practical Improved Flux Method (PIFM) is accurate for angles <93° by comparing the resulting height resolved actinic fluxes with a recently developed full spherical reference model. We also show that the modified band method is more accurate than the original, with errors generally being less than ±10% throughout the atmospheric column for a diverse range of chemical species. Moreover, we perform certain sensitivity studies that indicate it is robust and performs well over a wide range of conditions relevant to the atmosphere
The Panchromatic Hubble Andromeda Treasury XI: The Spatially-Resolved Recent Star Formation History of M31
We measure the recent star formation history (SFH) across M31 using optical
images taken with the \texit{Hubble Space Telescope} as part of the
Panchromatic Hubble Andromeda Treasury (PHAT). We fit the color-magnitude
diagrams in ~9000 regions that are ~100 pc 100 pc in projected size,
covering a 0.5 square degree area (~380 kpc, deprojected) in the NE
quadrant of M31. We show that the SFHs vary significantly on these small
spatial scales but that there are also coherent galaxy-wide fluctuations in the
SFH back to ~500 Myr, most notably in M31's 10-kpc star-forming ring. We find
that the 10-kpc ring is at least 400 Myr old, showing ongoing star formation
over the past ~500 Myr. This indicates the presence of molecular gas in the
ring over at least 2 dynamical times at this radius. We also find that the
ring's position is constant throughout this time, and is stationary at the
level of 1 km/s, although there is evidence for broadening of the ring due to
diffusion of stars into the disk. Based on existing models of M31's ring
features, the lack of evolution in the ring's position makes a purely
collisional ring origin highly unlikely. We find that the global SFR has been
fairly constant over the last ~500 Myr, though it does show a small increase at
50 Myr that is 1.3 times the average SFR over the past 100 Myr. During the last
~500 Myr, ~60% of all SF occurs in the 10-kpc ring. Finally, we find that in
the past 100 Myr, the average SFR over the PHAT survey area is
M yr with an average deprojected intensity of M yr kpc, which yields a total SFR of ~0.7
M yr when extrapolated to the entire area of M31's disk. This
