    In situ observations of ClO in the Antarctic: Evidence for chlorine catalyzed destruction of ozone

    Results from a series of 12 ER-2 aircraft flights into the Antarctic polar vortex are summarized. These in situ data define the spatial and temporal distribution of ClO as the aircraft flew at an altitude of approx. 18 km from Punta Arenas (54 deg S latitude) to the base of the Palmer Peninsula (72 deg S latitude), executed a rapid descent to approx. 13 km, turned north and climbed bach to approximately 18 km, returning to Punta Arenas. A general pattern in the ClO distribution is reported: mixing ratios of approximately 10 ppt are found at altitude in the vicinity of 55 deg S increasing to 50 ppt at 60 degrees S. In the vicinity of 65 deg S latitude a steep gradient in the ClO mixing ratio is observed. At a fixed potential temperature, the ClO mixing ratio through this sharp transition increases by an order of magnitude within a very few degrees of latitude, thus defining the edge of the chemical containment vessel. From the edge of that containment vessel to the southern extension of the flights, 72 deg S, a dome of slowly increasing ClO best describes the distribution. Conclusion are drawn from the data

    Locations of small earthquakes near the trifurcation of the San Jacinto fault southeast of Anza, California

    About 100 small earthquakes (M ≈ 1/2 to 2) which occurred near the trifurcation of the San Jacinto fault southeast of Anza, California, have been accurately located using five- and six-station arrays with dimensions of about 10 km. The pattern of epicenters is complex and extends several km outside of the area outlined by the traces of faulting. Patterns of seismicity observed on opposite sides of the San Jacinto fault are significantly different. On the southwest side, a concentration of foci lies at a depth of about 4-7 km along the projected extension of the Coyote Creek fault a few km northwest of the last surface evidence of faulting. On the northeast side, earthquakes are concentrated at depths between 10 and 15 km. A group of the latter events recorded about 1 week after the magnitude 4.7 earthquake of May 21, 1967 forms a linear pattern parallel to the San Jacinto fault with depths from 3 to 15 km. This pattern may represent the zone of energy release or slip for that earthquake and possibly the plane of the San Jacinto fault at depth, although the epicenters are located about 2 to 3 km to the northeast of the trace of the San Jacinto fault. Most of the earthquakes located in this study are not aftershocks in the usual sense, i.e., easily correlated with a preceding large earthquake. They represent a complex pattern of seismicity which has continued at least for the last 3 years on the micro-earthquake level and for the last 30 years on the macroseismic level

    Process Intensification of the Propane Dehydrogenation Considering Coke Formation, Catalyst Deactivation and Regeneration—Transient Modelling and Analysis of a Heat-Integrated Membrane Reactor

    A heat-integrated packed-bed membrane reactor is studied based on detailed, transient 2D models for coupling oxidative and thermal propane dehydrogenation in one apparatus. The reactor is structured in two telescoped reaction zones to figure out the potential of mass and heat integration between the exothermic oxidative propane dehydrogenation (ODH) in the shell side, including membrane-assisted oxygen dosing and the endothermic, high selective thermal propane dehydrogenation (TDH) in the inner core. The developing complex concentration, temperature and velocity fields are studied, taking into account simultaneous coke growth corresponding with a loss of catalyst activity. Furthermore, the catalyst regeneration was included in the simulation in order to perform an analysis of a periodic operating system of deactivation and regeneration periods. The coupling of the two reaction chambers in a new type of membrane reactor offers potential at oxygen shortage and significantly improves the achievable propene yield in comparison with fixed bed and well-established membrane reactors in the distributor configuration without inner mass and heat integration. The methods developed allow an overall process optimization with respect to maximum spacetime yield as a function of production and regeneration times

    Environment induced decoherence entails the absence of quantum interference phenomena from the macroworld. The loss of coherence between superposed wave packets depends on their separation. The precise temporal course depends on the relative size of the time scales for decoherence and other processes taking place in the open system and its environment. We use the exactly solvable model of an harmonic oscillator coupled to a bath of oscillators to illustrate various decoherence scenarios: These range from exponential golden-rule decay for microscopic superpositions, system-specific decay for larger separations in a crossover regime, and finally universal interaction-dominated decoherence for ever more macroscopic superpositions.Comment: 11 pages, 7 figures, accompanying paper to quant-ph/020412

    We consider environment induced decoherence of quantum superpositions to mixtures in the limit in which that process is much faster than any competing one generated by the Hamiltonian HsysH_{\rm sys} of the isolated system. While the golden rule then does not apply we can discard HsysH_{\rm sys}. By allowing for simultaneous couplings to different reservoirs, we reveal decoherence as a universal short-time phenomenon independent of the character of the system as well as the bath and of the basis the superimposed states are taken from. We discuss consequences for the classical behavior of the macroworld and quantum measurement: For the decoherence of superpositions of macroscopically distinct states the system Hamiltonian is always negligible.Comment: 4 revtex pages, no figure
