Using cognitive work analysis to explore activity allocation within military domains
Cognitive Work Analysis (CWA) is frequently advocated as an approach for the analysis of complex sociotechnical systems. Much of the current CWA literature within the military domain pays particular attention to its initial phases; Work Domain Analysis and Contextual Task Analysis. Comparably, the analysis of the social and organisational constraints receives much less attention. Through the study of a helicopter Mission Planning System (MPS) software tool, this paper describes an approach for investigating the constraints affecting the distribution of work. The paper uses this model to evaluate the potential benefits of the social and organisational analysis phase within a military context. The analysis shows that, through its focus on constraints the approach provides a unique description of the factors influencing the social organisation within a complex domain. This approach appears to be compatible with existing approaches and serves as a validation of more established social analysis techniques
Etching of random solids: hardening dynamics and self-organized fractality
When a finite volume of an etching solution comes in contact with a
disordered solid, a complex dynamics of the solid-solution interface develops.
Since only the weak parts are corroded, the solid surface hardens
progressively. If the etchant is consumed in the chemical reaction, the
corrosion dynamics slows down and stops spontaneously leaving a fractal solid
surface, which reveals the latent percolation criticality hidden in any random
system. Here we introduce and study, both analytically and numerically, a
simple model for this phenomenon. In this way we obtain a detailed description
of the process in terms of percolation theory. In particular we explain the

Spin-spin correlation functions of the XXZ-1/2 Heisenberg chain in a magnetic field
Using algebraic Bethe ansatz and the solution of the quantum inverse
scattering problem, we compute compact representations of the spin-spin
correlation functions of the XXZ-1/2 Heisenberg chain in a magnetic field. At
lattice distance m, they are typically given as the sum of m terms. Each term n
of this sum, n = 1,...,m is represented in the thermodynamic limit as a
multiple integral of order 2n+1; the integrand depends on the distance as the
power m of some simple function. The root of these results is the derivation of
a compact formula for the multiple action on a general quantum state of the
chain of transfer matrix operators for arbitrary values of their spectral

Oscillations of a solid sphere falling through a wormlike micellar fluid
We present an experimental study of the motion of a solid sphere falling
through a wormlike micellar fluid. While smaller or lighter spheres quickly
reach a terminal velocity, larger or heavier spheres are found to oscillate in
the direction of their falling motion. The onset of this instability correlates
with a critical value of the velocity gradient scale
s. We relate this condition to the known complex rheology of wormlike
micellar fluids, and suggest that the unsteady motion of the sphere is caused
by the formation and breaking of flow-induced structures.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figure

We derive a new representation for spin-spin correlation functions of the
finite XXZ spin-1/2 Heisenberg chain in terms of a single multiple integral,
that we call the master equation. Evaluation of this master equation gives rise
on the one hand to the previously obtained multiple integral formulas for the
spin-spin correlation functions and on the other hand to their expansion in
terms of the form factors of the local spin operators. Hence, it provides a
direct analytic link between these two representations of the correlation
functions and a complete re-summation of the corresponding series. The master
equation method also allows one to obtain multiple integral representations for

Climate change refugia for the flora and fauna of England
A variety of evidence suggests that species have, in the past, been able to withstand the effects of climatic change in localised environments known as refugia, where specific environmental conditions acted as a buffer against broader-scale climatic changes.
Therefore, an important question for conservation is whether refugia might exist under current and future anthropogenic climate change. If there are areas that are likely to remain relatively climatically stable and so enable species to persist despite climate change making surrounding areas unsuitable, identifying and protecting these places will be an important part of future conservation strategies.
This report is part of a project that is investigating this question. The report was commissioned to identify the characteristics of potential refugia, to investigate evidence for the existence of contemporary refugia by analysing patterns of local persistence and disappearance of over 1000 species across a range of taxa, and to identify sites in England with the potential to function as refugia for different taxonomic groups at a range of spatial scales
Tetraazamacrocyclic derivatives and their metal complexes as antileishmanial leads
© 2019 A total of 44 bis-aryl-monocyclic polyamines, monoaryl-monocyclic polyamines and their transition metal complexes were prepared, chemically characterized, and screened in vitro against the Leishmania donovani promastigotes, axenic amastigotes and intracellular amastigotes in THP1 cells. The IC 50 and/or IC 90 values showed that 10 compounds were similarly active at about 2-fold less potent than known drug pentamidine against promastigotes. The most potent compound had an IC 50 of 2.82 ”M (compared to 2.93 ”M for pentamidine). Nine compounds were 1.1â13.6-fold more potent than pentamidine against axenic amastigotes, the most potent one being about 2-fold less potent than amphotericin B. Fourteen compounds were about 2â10 fold more potent than pentamidine, the most potent one is about 2-fold less potent than amphotericin B against intracellular amastigotes in THP1 cells. The 2 most promising compounds (FeL7Cl 2 and MnL7Cl 2 ), with strong activity against both promastigotes and amastigotes and no observable toxicity against the THP1 cells are the Fe 2+ - and Mn 2+ -complexes of a dibenzyl cyclen derivative. Only 2 of the 44 compounds showed observable cytotoxicity against THP1 cells. Tetraazamacrocyclic monocyclic polyamines represent a new class of antileishmanial lead structures that warrant follow up studies
Cosmological parameters from SDSS and WMAP
We measure cosmological parameters using the three-dimensional power spectrum
P(k) from over 200,000 galaxies in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) in
combination with WMAP and other data. Our results are consistent with a
``vanilla'' flat adiabatic Lambda-CDM model without tilt (n=1), running tilt,
tensor modes or massive neutrinos. Adding SDSS information more than halves the
WMAP-only error bars on some parameters, tightening 1 sigma constraints on the
Hubble parameter from h~0.74+0.18-0.07 to h~0.70+0.04-0.03, on the matter
density from Omega_m~0.25+/-0.10 to Omega_m~0.30+/-0.04 (1 sigma) and on
neutrino masses from <11 eV to <0.6 eV (95%). SDSS helps even more when
dropping prior assumptions about curvature, neutrinos, tensor modes and the
equation of state. Our results are in substantial agreement with the joint
analysis of WMAP and the 2dF Galaxy Redshift Survey, which is an impressive
consistency check with independent redshift survey data and analysis
techniques. In this paper, we place particular emphasis on clarifying the
physical origin of the constraints, i.e., what we do and do not know when using
different data sets and prior assumptions. For instance, dropping the
assumption that space is perfectly flat, the WMAP-only constraint on the
measured age of the Universe tightens from t0~16.3+2.3-1.8 Gyr to
t0~14.1+1.0-0.9 Gyr by adding SDSS and SN Ia data. Including tensors, running
tilt, neutrino mass and equation of state in the list of free parameters, many
constraints are still quite weak, but future cosmological measurements from
SDSS and other sources should allow these to be substantially tightened.Comment: Minor revisions to match accepted PRD version. SDSS data and ppt
