    The Calf Value Discovery Program (CVD) allows cow‐calf producers to gain knowledge of the finishing segment of the beef cattle industry and the marketing of fed cattle. Specifically, CVD provides an opportunity for cow‐calf producers to learn how their calves perform in a feedlot and their carcass value when sold in a value‐based marketing system. Each producer taking part in the program could consign 5 or more steers weighing between 500 and 800 pounds to the CVD program. Animals were finished at VanderWal Yards (Bruce, SD) in a calf‐fed program using typical diets and management protocols. Carcass and feedlot performance information from calves were returned to producers for use in making future management decisions to improve profitability

    Comparison of Two Different Methods to Harvest Drought‐Damaged Corn

    Two methods of harvesting drought‐stressed corn as large round bales were compared in this study. Three acres of drought‐stressed corn were cut and either baled as high‐moisture bales and wrapped in plastic (BALEAGE), or allowed to completely dry and baled with a conventional large round baler (DRY). Core samples were analyzed for moisture, CP, ADF, NDF and in vitro NDF and DM digestibility. Samples from the BALEAGE treatment were lower in CP than those from the DRY treatment. Concentrations of ADF and NDF did not differ between BALEAGE and DRY. Dry matter and NDF digestibility were also similar between the treatments. The challenges of physically handling the bales from the BALEAGE treatment and in maintaining the integrity of the plastic barrier limit the usefulness of this technique compared to either chopping the corn for silage or harvesting the corn as dry, large round bales

    We present measurements of the low-temperature thermal conductivity of a number of polymeric and composite materials from 0.3 to 4 K. The materials measured are Vespel SP-1, Vespel SP-22, unfilled PEEK, 30% carbon fiber-filled PEEK, 30% glass-filled PEEK, carbon fiber Graphlite composite rod, Torlon 4301, G-10/FR-4 fiberglass, pultruded fiberglass composite, Macor ceramic, and graphite rod. These materials have moderate to high elastic moduli making them useful for thermally-isolating structural supports.Comment: Accepted for publication in the journal Cryogenic

    Wide Angle Polarization Analysis with Neutron Spin Filters

    AbstractWe report substantial improvements in a compact wide angle neutron spin filter system that was recently employed on the Multi- Axis Crystal Spectrometer at the Center for Neutron Research at the U.S. National Institute of Standards and Technology. The apparatus consists of a cylindrical 3He polarizer cell and wide-angle 3He analyzer cells, a vertical solenoid to provide a uniform magnetic field, and a shielded radio-frequency solenoid for the polarizer cell. Nuclear magnetic resonance is employed to reverse the polarization in the polarizer cell and monitor the 3He polarization in all cells. The first experiment using this apparatus was carried out with cylindrical analyzer cells with limited angular coverage due to low polarizations in fused quartz cells. We present results for aluminosilicate glass analyzer cells that cover 110 ∘ and have long relaxation times (100h to 400h). Using two 100W diode bars spectrally narrowed with chirped volume Bragg gratings, we have obtained 65% - 80% 3He polarization in these cells. The 3He polarization has been measured by neutron transmission and electron paramagnetic resonance. Additional progress includes an improved holding field solenoid and decreased spin-flip losses

    Response, relaxation and transport in unconventional superconductors

    We investigate the collision-limited electronic Raman response and the attenuation of ultrasound in spin-singlet d-wave superconductors at low temperatures. The dominating elastic collisions are treated within a t-matrix approximation, which combines the description of weak (Born) and strong (unitary) impurity scattering. In the long wavelength limit a two-fluid description of both response and transport emerges. Collisions are here seen to exclusively dominate the relaxational dynamics of the (Bogoliubov) quasiparticle system and the analysis allows for a clear connection of response and transport phenomena. When applied to quasi-2-d superconductors like the cuprates, it turns out that the transport parameter associated with the Raman scattering intensity for B1g and B2g photon polarization is closely related to the corresponding components of the shear viscosity tensor, which dominates the attenuation of ultrasound. At low temperatures we present analytic solutions of the transport equations, resulting in a non-power-law behavior of the transport parameters on temperature.Comment: 22 pages, 3 figure

    Economic evaluation of diagnosing and excluding ectopic pregnancy

    BACKGROUND: The diagnosis of ectopic pregnancy in women presenting in early pregnancy is often protracted, relying on costly investigations that are psychologically burdensome to the patient. The aim of this study was to evaluate the financial costs to the health services in Scotland of the current methods used to diagnose and exclude ectopic pregnancy, and compare these with that of a theoretical single diagnostic serum biomarker. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective cost description analysis (with and without costs of diagnostic laparoscopy) of the healthcare costs incurred by all patients presenting to a large Scottish teaching hospital between June and September 2006 with pain and bleeding in early pregnancy, where ectopic pregnancy was not excluded. Additionally, a cost minimisation analysis was performed of the costs of current ectopic pregnancy investigations versus those of a theoretical single diagnostic serum biomarker. This included sensitivity analyses where the biomarker was priced at increasing values and assumed to have less than 100% diagnostic sensitivity and specificity. RESULTS: 175 patients were eligible to be included in the analysis. 47% of patients required more than 3 visits to diagnose or exclude ectopic pregnancy. The total yearly cost for diagnosing and excluding ectopic pregnancy was ÂŁ197K for the hospital stated, and was estimated to be ÂŁ1,364K for Scotland overall. Using a theoretical diagnostic serum biomarker we calculated that we could save health services up to ÂŁ976K (lowest saving ÂŁ251K after subanalyses) every year in Scotland. CONCLUSIONS: Ectopic pregnancy is expensive to diagnose and exclude, and the investigation process is often long and might involve significant psychological morbidity. The development of a single diagnostic serum biomarker would minimise this morbidity and lead to significant savings of up to ÂŁ1 million pounds per year in Scotland

    Can forest management based on natural disturbances maintain ecological resilience?

    Given the increasingly global stresses on forests, many ecologists argue that managers must maintain ecological resilience: the capacity of ecosystems to absorb disturbances without undergoing fundamental change. In this review we ask: Can the emerging paradigm of natural-disturbance-based management (NDBM) maintain ecological resilience in managed forests? Applying resilience theory requires careful articulation of the ecosystem state under consideration, the disturbances and stresses that affect the persistence of possible alternative states, and the spatial and temporal scales of management relevance. Implementing NDBM while maintaining resilience means recognizing that (i) biodiversity is important for long-term ecosystem persistence, (ii) natural disturbances play a critical role as a generator of structural and compositional heterogeneity at multiple scales, and (iii) traditional management tends to produce forests more homogeneous than those disturbed naturally and increases the likelihood of unexpected catastrophic change by constraining variation of key environmental processes. NDBM may maintain resilience if silvicultural strategies retain the structures and processes that perpetuate desired states while reducing those that enhance resilience of undesirable states. Such strategies require an understanding of harvesting impacts on slow ecosystem processes, such as seed-bank or nutrient dynamics, which in the long term can lead to ecological surprises by altering the forest's capacity to reorganize after disturbance
