Traces of volcanic ash from the Mediterranean, Iceland and North America in a Holocene record from South Wales, UK
A tephra record is presented for a sediment core from Llyn Llech Owain, south Wales, spanning the earlyâ to midâHolocene. Seven cryptotephra deposits are discovered with three thought to correlate with known eruptions and the remaining four considered to represent previously undocumented events. One deposit is suggested to correlate with the ~6.9âcal ka bp Lairg A tephra from Iceland, whereas more distant sources are proposed as the origin for two of the tephra deposits. A peak of colourless shards in earlyâHolocene sediments is thought to tentatively correlate with the ~9.6âcal ka bp Fondi di Baia tephra (Campi Flegrei) and a second cryptotephra is tentatively correlated with the ~3.6âcal ka bp Aniakchak (CFE) II tephra (Alaska). The Fondi di Baia tephra has never been recorded beyond proximal sites and its discovery in south Wales significantly extends the geographical distribution of ash from this eruption. The remaining four cryptotephra deposits are yet to be correlated with known eruptions, demonstrating that our current understanding of widespread tephra deposits is incomplete. This new tephra record highlights the potential for sites at more southerly and westerly locations in northwest Europe to act as repositories for ash from several volcanic regions
Comparison of limb kinematics between collected and lengthened (medium/extended) trot in two groups of dressage horses on two different surfaces
Background: Dressage horses are often asked to work in lengthened paces during training and competition, but to date there is limited information about the biomechanics of dressage-specific paces. Preliminary work has shown increased fetlock extension in extended compared with collected paces, but further investigation of the kinematic differences between collected, medium and extended trot in dressage horses is warranted.
Objectives: Investigation of the effect of collected versus medium/extended trot on limb kinematics of dressage horses.
Study design: Prospective kinematic evaluation.
Methods: Twenty clinically sound horses in active dressage training were used: Group 1) ten young horses (†6 years) were assessed at collected and medium trot; Group 2) ten mature horses (â„9 years) were assessed at collected and extended trot. All horses were evaluated on two different surfaces. High-speed motion-capture (240Hz) was used to determine kinematic variables. Forelimb and hindlimb angles were measured at midstance. Descriptive statistics and mixed-effect multilevel-regression analyses were performed.
Results: Speed and stride length were reduced and stride duration increased at collected compared with medium/extended trot. Lengthened trot (medium/extended trot) was associated with increased fetlock extension in both the forelimbs and hindlimbs in both groups of horses. Changes were greater in Group 2 compared with Group 1. Shoulder and carpus angles were associated with forelimb fetlock angle. Hock angle was not significantly influenced by pace. Surface had no effect on fetlock or hock angles.
Main limitations: Only 2D motion analysis was carried out. Results may have been different in horses with more extreme gait characteristics.
Conclusions: Medium/extended trot increases extension of the forelimb and the hindlimb fetlock joints compared with collected trot in both young and mature dressage horses, respectively
The test accuracy of antenatal ultrasound definitions of fetal macrosomia to predict birth injury: A systematic review.
OBJECTIVES: To determine which ultrasound measurement for predicted fetal macrosomia most accurately predicts adverse delivery and neonatal outcomes. STUDY DESIGN: Four biomedical databases searched for studies published after 1966. Randomised trials or observational studies of women with singleton pregnancies, resulting in a term birth who have undergone an index test of interest measured and recorded as predicted fetal macrosomia â„28 weeks. Adverse outcomes of interest included shoulder dystocia, brachial plexus injury (BPI) and Caesarean section. RESULTS: Twenty-five observational studies (13,285 participants) were included. For BPI, the only significant positive association was found for Abdominal Circumference (AC) to Head Circumference (HC) difference > 50âŻmm (OR 7.2, 95 % CI 1.8-29). Shoulder dystocia was significantly associated with abdominal diameter (AD) minus biparietal diameter (BPD) â„ 2.6âŻcm (OR 4.2, 95 % CI 2.3-7.5, PPV 11 %) and AC > 90th centile (OR 2.3, 95 % CI 1.3-4.0, PPV 8.6 %) and an estimated fetal weight (EFW) > 4000âŻg (OR 2.1 95 %CI 1.0-4.1, PPV 7.2 %). CONCLUSIONS: Estimated fetal weight is the most widely used ultrasound marker to predict fetal macrosomia in the UK. This study suggests other markers have a higher positive predictive value for adverse outcomes associated with fetal macrosomia
Electro-Magnetic Nucleon Form Factors and their Spectral Functions in Soliton Models
It is demonstrated that in simple soliton models essential features of the
electro-magnetic nucleon form factors observed over three orders of magnitude
in momentum transfer are naturally reproduced. The analysis shows that
three basic ingredients are required: an extended object, partial coupling to
vector mesons, and relativistic recoil corrections. We use for the extended
object the standard skyrmion, one vector meson propagator for both isospin
channels, and the relativistic boost to the Breit frame. Continuation to
timelike leads to quite stable results for the spectral functions in the
regime from the 2- or 3-pion threshold to about two rho masses. Especially the
onset of the continuous part of the spectral functions at threshold can be
reliably determined and there are strong analogies to the results imposed on
dispersion theoretic approaches by the unitarity constraint.Comment: 24 pages, (RevTeX), 5 PS-figures; Data points in fig.2 and

Characterization of Shewanella oneidensis MtrC: a cell-surface decaheme cytochrome involved in respiratory electron transport to extracellular electron acceptors
MtrC is a decaheme c-type cytochrome associated with the outer cell membrane of Fe(III)-respiring species of the Shewanella genus. It is proposed to play a role in anaerobic respiration by mediating electron transfer to extracellular mineral oxides that can serve as terminal electron acceptors. The present work presents the first spectropotentiometric and voltammetric characterization of MtrC, using protein purified from Shewanella oneidensis MR-1. Potentiometric titrations, monitored by UVâvis absorption and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectroscopy, reveal that the hemes within MtrC titrate over a broad potential range spanning between approximately +100 and approximately -500 mV (vs. the standard hydrogen electrode). Across this potential window the UVâvis absorption spectra are characteristic of low-spin c-type hemes and the EPR spectra reveal broad, complex features that suggest the presence of magnetically spin-coupled low-spin c-hemes. Non-catalytic protein film voltammetry of MtrC demonstrates reversible electrochemistry over a potential window similar to that disclosed spectroscopically. The voltammetry also allows definition of kinetic properties of MtrC in direct electron exchange with a solid electrode surface and during reduction of a model Fe(III) substrate. Taken together, the data provide quantitative information on the potential domain in which MtrC can operate
Cerebral blood volume, genotype and chemosensitivity in oligodendroglial tumours
INTRODUCTION: The biological factors responsible for differential chemoresponsiveness in oligodendroglial tumours with or without the â1p/â19q genotype are unknown, but tumour vascularity may contribute. We aimed to determine whether dynamic susceptibility contrast (DSC) magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) could distinguish molecular subtypes of oligodendroglial tumour, and examined the relationship between relative cerebral blood volume (rCBV) and outcome following procarbazine, lomustine and vincristine (PCV) chemotherapy. METHODS: Pretherapy rCBV was calculated and inter- and intraobserver variability assessed. Allelic imbalance in 1p36, 19q13, 17p13, 10p12â15, and 10q22â26 and p53 mutation (exons 5â8) were determined. rCBV was compared with genotype and clinicopathological characteristics (n=37) and outcome following PCV chemotherapy (n=33). RESULTS: 1p/19q loss was seen in 6/9 grade II oligodendrogliomas, 6/14 grade II oligoastrocytomas, 4/4 grade III oligodendrogliomas, and 3/10 grade III oligoastrocytomas. rCBV measurements had good inter- and intraobserver variability, but did not distinguish histology subtype or grade. Tumours with 1p/19q loss had higher rCBV values (Studentâs t-test P=0.001). Receiver operating characteristic analysis revealed a cut-off of 1.59 for identifying genotype (sensitivity 92%, specificity 76%). Tumours with high and low rCBV showed response to chemotherapy. The â1p/â19q genotype, but not rCBV, was strongly associated with response, progression-free and overall survival following PCV chemotherapy. Tumours with high rCBV and intact 1p/19q were associated with shorter progression-free and overall patient survival than those with intact 1p/19q and low rCBV or high rCBV and 1p/19q loss. CONCLUSION: rCBV identifies oligodendroglial tumours with 1p/19q loss, but does not predict chemosensitivity. The prognostic significance of rCBV may differ in oligodendroglial tumours with or without the â1p/â19q genotype

Background studies for the EDELWEISS dark matter experiment
The EDELWEISS-II collaboration has completed a direct search for WIMP dark
matter using cryogenic Ge detectors (400 g each) and 384 kgdays of
effective exposure. A cross-section of pb is excluded at
90% C.L. for a WIMP mass of 85 GeV. The next phase, EDELWEISS-III, aims to
probe spin-independent WIMP-nucleon cross-sections down to a few
pb. We present here the study of gamma and neutron background
coming from radioactive decays in the set-up and shielding materials. We have
carried out Monte Carlo simulations for the completed EDELWEISS-II setup with
GEANT4 and normalised the expected background rates to the measured
radioactivity levels (or their upper limits) of all materials and components.
The expected gamma-ray event rate in EDELWEISS-II at 20-200 keV agrees with the
observed rate of 82 events/kg/day within the uncertainties in the measured
concentrations. The calculated neutron rate from radioactivity of 1.0-3.1
events (90% C.L.) at 20-200 keV in the EDELWEISS-II data together with the
expected upper limit on the misidentified gamma-ray events (), surface
betas (), and muon-induced neutrons (), do not contradict 5
observed events in nuclear recoil band. We have then extended the simulation
framework to the EDELWEISS-III configuration with 800 g crystals, better
material purity and additional neutron shielding inside the cryostat. The
gamma-ray and neutron backgrounds in 24 kg fiducial mass of EDELWEISS-III have
been calculated as 14-44 events/kg/day and 0.7-1.4 events per year,
respectively. The results of the background studies performed in the present
work have helped to select better purity components and improve shielding in
EDELWEISS-III to further reduce the expected rate of background events in the

Axion searches with the EDELWEISS-II experiment
We present new constraints on the couplings of axions and more generic
axion-like particles using data from the EDELWEISS-II experiment. The EDELWEISS
experiment, located at the Underground Laboratory of Modane, primarily aims at
the direct detection of WIMPs using germanium bolometers. It is also sensitive
to the low-energy electron recoils that would be induced by solar or dark
matter axions. Using a total exposure of up to 448 kg.d, we searched for
axion-induced electron recoils down to 2.5 keV within four scenarios involving
different hypotheses on the origin and couplings of axions. We set a 95% CL
limit on the coupling to photons GeV in
a mass range not fully covered by axion helioscopes. We also constrain the
coupling to electrons, , similar to the more
indirect solar neutrino bound. Finally we place a limit on , where is the
effective axion-nucleon coupling for Fe. Combining these results we
fully exclude the mass range keV for DFSZ axions and
keV for KSVZ axions
