Evolving Human Rights Norms Around Sexuality
International human rights law has only very recently begun to address issues of sexual identity
Children and Online Privacy Protection: Empowerment from Cognitive Defense Strategies
At present, very little is known about what might encourage children and teens to limit access to their private information online and to restrict what they share on social media and video sites. Federal and state agencies face challenges encouraging companies to help children, teens, and parents protect their information online. The authors extend previous cognitive defense research by examining (1) effects beyond advertising as applied to information privacy online; (2) not only childrenâs/teensâ beliefs and knowledge, but also their online privacy decisions; (3) multiple age categories; (4) multiple cognitive defense strategies (educational video, quiz with feedback, or absence of a strategy); and (5) childrenâs/teensâ motivation to restrict what they share online. Key results indicate significant effects of the quiz and educational video over the absence of a strategy in enhancing favorable online safety beliefs and in restricting online sharing. Findings also demonstrate the role of perceived parental influence and for agencies to offer privacy education campaigns to help empower children to protect their privacy. Implications for policy and privacy research are discussed
On Signatures of Atmospheric Features in Thermal Phase Curves of Hot Jupiters
Turbulence is ubiquitous in Solar System planetary atmospheres. In hot
Jupiter atmospheres, the combination of moderately slow rotation and thick
pressure scale height may result in dynamical weather structures with unusually
large, planetary-size scales. Using equivalent-barotropic, turbulent
circulation models, we illustrate how such structures can generate a variety of
features in the thermal phase curves of hot Jupiters, including phase shifts
and deviations from periodicity. Such features may have been spotted in the
recent infrared phase curve of HD 189733b. Despite inherent difficulties with
the interpretation of disk-integrated quantities, phase curves promise to offer
unique constraints on the nature of the circulation regime present on hot

Period and chemical evolution of SC stars
The SC and CS stars are thermal-pulsing AGB stars with C/O ratio close to
unity. Within this small group, the Mira variable BH Cru recently evolved from
spectral type SC (showing ZrO bands) to CS (showing weak C2). Wavelet analysis
shows that the spectral evolution was accompanied by a dramatic period
increase, from 420 to 540 days, indicating an expanding radius. The pulsation
amplitude also increased. Old photographic plates are used to establish that
the period before 1940 was around 490 days. Chemical models indicate that the
spectral changes were caused by a decrease in stellar temperature, related to
the increasing radius. There is no evidence for a change in C/O ratio. The
evolution in BH Cru is unlikely to be related to an on-going thermal pulse.
Periods of the other SC and CS stars, including nine new periods, are
determined. A second SC star, LX Cyg, also shows evidence for a large increase
in period, and one further star shows a period inconsistent with a previous
determination. Mira periods may be intrinsically unstable for C/O ~ 1; possibly
because of a feedback between the molecular opacities, pulsation amplitude, and
period. LRS spectra of 6 SC stars suggest a feature at wavelength > 15 micron,
which resembles one recently attributed to the iron-sulfide troilite. Chemical
models predict a large abundance of FeS in SC stars, in agreement with the

A Nationally Representative Survey Assessing Restorative Sleep in US Adults
Restorative sleep is a commonly used term but a poorly defined construct. Few studies have assessed restorative sleep in nationally representative samples. We convened a panel of 7 expert physicians and researchers to evaluate and enhance available measures of restorative sleep. We then developed the revised Restorative Sleep Questionnaire (REST-Q), which comprises 9 items assessing feelings resulting from the prior sleep episode, each with 5-point Likert response scales. Finally, we assessed the prevalence of high, somewhat, and low REST-Q scores in a nationally representative sample of US adults (n= 1,055) and examined the relationship of REST-Q scores with other sleep and demographic characteristics. Pairwise correlations were performed between the REST-Q scores and other self-reported sleep measures. Weighted logistic regression analyses were conducted to compare scores on the REST-Q with demographic variables. The prevalence of higher REST-Q scores (4 or 5 on the Likert scale) was 28.1% in the nationally representative sample. REST-Q scores positively correlated with sleep quality (r=0.61) and sleep duration (r=0.32), and negatively correlated with both difficulty falling asleep (r=-0.40) and falling back asleep after waking (r=-0.41). Higher restorative sleep scores (indicating more feelings of restoration upon waking) were more common among those who were: â„60 years of age (OR=4.20, 95%CI: 1.92-9.17); widowed (OR=2.35, 95%CI:1.01-5.42), and retired (OR=2.02, 95%CI:1.30-3.14). Higher restorative sleep scores were less frequent among those who were not working (OR=0.36, 95%CI: 0.10-1.00) and living in a household with two or more persons (OR=0.51,95%CI:0.29-0.87). Our findings suggest that the REST-Q may be useful for assessing restorative sleep
Training of Instrumentalists and Development of New Technologies on SOFIA
This white paper is submitted to the Astronomy and Astrophysics 2010 Decadal
Survey (Astro2010)1 Committee on the State of the Profession to emphasize the
potential of the Stratospheric Observatory for Infrared Astronomy (SOFIA) to
contribute to the training of instrumentalists and observers, and to related
technology developments. This potential goes beyond the primary mission of
SOFIA, which is to carry out unique, high priority astronomical research.
SOFIA is a Boeing 747SP aircraft with a 2.5 meter telescope. It will enable
astronomical observations anywhere, any time, and at most wavelengths between
0.3 microns and 1.6 mm not accessible from ground-based observatories. These
attributes, accruing from the mobility and flight altitude of SOFIA, guarantee
a wealth of scientific return. Its instrument teams (nine in the first
generation) and guest investigators will do suborbital astronomy in a
shirt-sleeve environment. The project will invest $10M per year in science
instrument development over a lifetime of 20 years. This, frequent flight
opportunities, and operation that enables rapid changes of science instruments
and hands-on in-flight access to the instruments, assure a unique and extensive
potential - both for training young instrumentalists and for encouraging and
deploying nascent technologies. Novel instruments covering optical, infrared,
and submillimeter bands can be developed for and tested on SOFIA by their
developers (including apprentices) for their own observations and for those of
guest observers, to validate technologies and maximize observational

Rasgrp1 mutation increases naĂŻve T-cell CD44 expression and drives mTOR-dependent accumulation of Helios+ T cells and autoantibodies
Missense variants are a major source of human genetic variation. Here we analyze a new mouse missense variant, Rasgrp1Anaef, with an ENU-mutated EF hand in the Rasgrp1 Ras guanine nucleotide exchange factor. Rasgrp1Anaef mice exhibit anti-nuclear autoantibodies and gradually accumulate a CD44hi Helios+ PD-1+ CD4+ T cell population that is dependent on B cells. Despite reduced Rasgrp1-Ras-ERK activation in vitro, thymocyte selection in Rasgrp1Anaef is mostly normal in vivo, although CD44 is overexpressed on naĂŻve thymocytes and T cells in a T-cell-autonomous manner. We identify CD44 expression as a sensitive reporter of tonic mTOR-S6 kinase signaling through a novel mouse strain, chino, with a reduction-of-function mutation in Mtor. Elevated tonic mTOR-S6 signaling occurs in Rasgrp1Anaef naĂŻve CD4+ T cells. CD44 expression, CD4+ T cell subset ratios and serum autoantibodies all returned to normal in Rasgrp1AnaefMtorchino double-mutant mice, demonstrating that increased mTOR activity is essential for the Rasgrp1Anaef T cell dysregulation
