    In vivo length oscillations of indirect flight muscles in the fruit fly Drosophila virilis

    We have used high-speed video microscopy to measure in vivo length oscillations of the indirect flight muscles of the fruit fly Drosophila virilis during tethered flight. The changes in muscle strain were measured by tracking the deformation of the thoracic exoskeleton at the origin and insertion of both the dorsal longitudinal (DLM) and the dorsal ventral (DVM) muscles. The mean peak-to-peak strain amplitudes were found to be 3.5% for the DLMs and 3.3% for the DVMs, although the strain amplitude within individual cycles ranged from 2 to 5%. These values are consistent with the small number of previous measurements of indirect flight muscle strain in other insects, but almost an order of magnitude greater than the strain amplitudes used in most biophysical studies of skinned Drosophila fibers. The results suggest that serial compliance within this sarcomere would need to relieve approximately 70% of the total strain in order for individual crossbridges to remain attached throughout a complete contraction-extension cycle

    Error Free Perfect Secrecy Systems

    Shannon's fundamental bound for perfect secrecy says that the entropy of the secret message cannot be larger than the entropy of the secret key initially shared by the sender and the legitimate receiver. Massey gave an information theoretic proof of this result, however this proof does not require independence of the key and ciphertext. By further assuming independence, we obtain a tighter lower bound, namely that the key entropy is not less than the logarithm of the message sample size in any cipher achieving perfect secrecy, even if the source distribution is fixed. The same bound also applies to the entropy of the ciphertext. The bounds still hold if the secret message has been compressed before encryption. This paper also illustrates that the lower bound only gives the minimum size of the pre-shared secret key. When a cipher system is used multiple times, this is no longer a reasonable measure for the portion of key consumed in each round. Instead, this paper proposes and justifies a new measure for key consumption rate. The existence of a fundamental tradeoff between the expected key consumption and the number of channel uses for conveying a ciphertext is shown.     A Research Note on using Mortality Statistics in Tort Claims

    Personal injury insurers constantly need to model the future mortality experience in the process of handling tort claims. Various stochastic mortality modelling techniques are deployed so that lawyers and actuaries specialised in this field of civil litigation can effectively perform the procedures related to dispute resolution and assessment of compensation. In this project, how lump sum awards are judicially determined in Hong Kong is examined. The impact of future mortality rates is discussed in the context of future medical expenses and loss of future earning as a result of discounting the future pecuniary values into a single present-day amount. The time value of money affected by inflation and the claimant’s mortality are among the key factors to be calibrated in the present study.     A Hybrid Signal-and-Link-Parametric Approach to Single-Ended Quality Measurement of Packetized Speech

    A hybrid signal-and-link-parametric approach to single-ended quality measurement of packetized speech is proposed. Trans-mission link parameters are used to determine a base quality for the test signal. The base quality is adjusted by degradation factors calculated from perceptual features extracted from the test signal. The degradation factors are based on Kullback-Leibler distances between a parametric model trained online for the extracted features and reference models of normative speech behavior.     Short-term effects of a gain-focused reappraisal intervention for dementia caregivers: A double-blind cluster-randomized controlled trial

    Objectives To examine the effects of a benefit-finding intervention, the key feature being the use of gain-focused reappraisal strategies to find positive meanings and benefits in caring for someone with dementia. Design: Cluster-randomized double-blind controlled trial. Setting: Social centers and clinics. Participants: 129 caregivers. Inclusion criteria were (a) primary caregiver aged 18+ and without cognitive impairment, (b) providing ≥14 care hours per week to a relative with mild-to-moderate Alzheimer's disease, and (c) scoring ≥3 on the Hamilton Depression Rating Scale. Exclusion criterion was care-recipient having parkinsonism or other forms of dementia. Interventions: The benefit-finding intervention was evaluated against two treatment-as-usuals, namely, simplified psychoeducation (lectures only) and standard psychoeducation. Each intervention lasted eight weeks, with a 2-hour session per week. Randomization into these conditions was based on center/clinic membership. Measurements: Primary outcome was depressive symptom. Secondary outcomes were Zarit Burden Interview, role overload, and psychological well-being. Self-efficacy beliefs and positive gains were treated as mediators. Measures were collected at baseline and posttreatment. Results: Regression analyses showed BF treatment effects on all outcomes when compared with SIM-PE, and effects on depressive symptoms and Zarit burden when compared with STD-PE. Effect sizes were medium-to-large for depressive symptoms (d=-0.77– -0.96), and medium for the secondary outcomes (d=|0.42–0.65|). Furthermore, using the bootstrapping method, we found significant mediating effects by self-efficacy in controlling upsetting thoughts and positive gains, with the former being the primary mediator. Conclusions: Finding positive gains reduces depressive symptoms and burden and promotes psychological well-being primarily through enhancing self-efficacy in controlling upsetting thoughts
