    Thermal comfort and energy performance of public rental housing under typical and near-extreme weather conditions in Hong Kong

    © 2017 Elsevier B.V. Building performance evaluation is crucial for sustainable urban developments. In high-density cities, occupants suffer from poor living conditions due to building overheating, especially during increasingly frequent near-extreme summer conditions caused by climate change. To represent this situation, the summer reference year weather data was employed for building simulations using DesignBuilder. This study aims to evaluate the thermal comfort and energy consumption of four typical public rental housing (PRH) building types in Hong Kong. For free-running flats, results show generally higher air temperatures in the oldest PRH type (Slab) with a compact linear building form and the most sensitive response to outdoor temperature changes for another older PRH type (Trident) with a Y-shaped design, possibly owing to its high wall conductivity. Occupants in all building types experience a ???10% increase in the proportion of discomfort hours when compared to results for typical summer conditions, but overheating is the most severe in Slab type PRH. Following an initial assessment of the cooling energy usage, a simple sensitivity test was conducted to explore the potential energy savings by various passive design strategies, including shading and reducing the exposed cooled space. A cross-shaped building form also appears to be more energy efficient. These findings, complemented by further parametric analyses, may prove useful when designing buildings for climate change

    Distribution of <i>salmonella</i> serovars in humans, foods, farm animals and environment, companion and wildlife animals in Singapore

    We analyzed the epidemiological distribution of Salmonella serovars in humans, foods, animals and the environment as a One-Health step towards identifying risk factors for human salmonellosis. Throughout the 2012&ndash;2016 period, Salmonella ser. Enteritidis was consistently the predominating serovar attributing to &gt;20.0% of isolates in humans. Other most common serovars in humans include Salmonella ser. Stanley, Salmonella ser. Weltevreden, Salmonella ser. Typhimurium and Salmonella ser. 4,5,12:b:-(dT+). S. Enteritidis was also the most frequent serovar found among the isolates from chicken/chicken products (28.5%) and eggs/egg products (61.5%) during the same period. In contrast, S. Typhimurium (35.2%) and Salmonella ser. Derby (18.8%) were prevalent in pork/pork products. S. Weltevreden was more frequent in seafood (19.2%) than others (&le;3.0%). Most isolates (&gt;80.0%) from farms, companion and wildlife animals belonged to serovars other than S. Enteritidis or S. Typhimurium. Findings demonstrate the significance of a One-Health investigative approach to understand the epidemiology Salmonella for more effective and integrated surveillance systems

    The growing needs of genetic counselling—Feasibility in utilization of tele-genetic counselling in Asia and Hong Kong

    The need for the expansion of genomic services has been at a record time high in the past decade. As technological advancement continues to strengthen the entire genetic and genomic pipeline and clinical operational workflow, the major challenge remains to be the speed of workforce development to meet service growth. In particular, the international expansion of genetic counselling (GC) services has been a topic of interest for the past few years. GC is an emerging profession in most of Asia, and in many countries the profession of GC often refers to physicians or front-line health workers with expertise in genetics to provide GC services rather than being a specific independent profession. As genetic and genomic services, especially pre-test and post-test GC, expand globally, the need to tackle the longstanding obstacles of GC personnel shortage and funding issues must not be overlooked. There is an urgent need internationally, and especially in Asia, where GC profession is comparatively less well-established, to seek alternative approaches to meet service demand. The present review examines the global development and feasibility of tele-genetics and tele-genetic counselling (TGC), and serves as the foundation to explore a possible roadmap in Hong Kong via the Hong Kong Genome Project

    Assessing the generalisability of the psychosis metabolic risk calculator (PsyMetRiC) for young people with first-episode psychosis with validation in a Hong Kong Chinese Han population:a 4-year follow-up study

    Background: Metabolic syndrome (MetS) is common following first-episode psychosis (FEP), contributing to substantial morbidity and mortality. The Psychosis Metabolic Risk Calculator (PsyMetRiC), a risk prediction algorithm for MetS following a FEP diagnosis, was developed in the United Kingdom and has been validated in other European populations. However, the predictive accuracy of PsyMetRiC in Chinese populations is unknown. Methods: FEP patients aged 15–35 y, first presented to the Early Assessment Service for Young People with Early Psychosis (EASY) Programme in Hong Kong (HK) between 2012 and 2021 were included. A binary MetS outcome was determined based on the latest available follow-up clinical information between 1 and 12 years after baseline assessment. The PsyMetRiC Full and Partial algorithms were assessed for discrimination, calibration and clinical utility in the HK sample, and logistic calibration was conducted to account for population differences. Sensitivity analysis was performed in patients aged &gt;35 years and using Chinese MetS criteria. Findings: The main analysis included 416 FEP patients (mean age = 23.8 y, male sex = 40.4%, 22.4% MetS prevalence at follow-up). PsyMetRiC showed adequate discriminative performance (full-model C = 0.76, 95% C.I. = 0.69–0.81; partial-model: C = 0.73, 95% C.I. = 0.65–0.8). Systematic risk underestimation in both models was corrected using logistic calibration to refine PsyMetRiC for HK Chinese FEP population (PsyMetRiC-HK). PsyMetRiC-HK provided a greater net benefit than competing strategies. Results remained robust with a Chinese MetS definition, but worse for the older age group. Interpretation: With good predictive performance for incident MetS, PsyMetRiC-HK presents a step forward for personalized preventative strategies of cardiometabolic morbidity and mortality in young Hong Kong Chinese FEP patients. Results show that the oldest Slab type PRH, which has a compact building form, has the highest indoor air temperature, yet the lowest cooling energy demand. On the other hand, the Trident type PRH, with the largest external wall U-value, performs the worst overall and is the most responsive to outdoor temperature changes
