    Probing Pauli Blocking Factors in Quantum Pumps with Broken Time-Reversal Symmetry

    A recently demonstrated quantum electron pump is discussed within the framework of photon-assisted tunneling. Due to lack of time-reversal symmetry, different results are obtained for the pump current depending on whether or not final-state Pauli blocking factors are used when describing the tunneling process. Whilst in both cases the current depends quadratically on the driving amplitude for moderate pumping, a marked difference is predicted for the temperature dependence. With blocking factors the pump current decreases roughly linearly with temperature until k_B T ~ \hbar\omega is reached, whereas without them it is unaffected by temperature, indicating that the entire Fermi sea participates in the electronic transport.Comment: 4 pages in RevTex4 (beta4), 6 figures; status: to appear in PR

    Simulation of associative learning with the replaced elements model

    Associative learning theories can be categorised according to whether they treat the representation of stimulus compounds in an elemental or configural manner. Since it is clear that a simple elemental approach to stimulus representation is inadequate there have been several attempts to produce more elaborate elemental models. One recent approach, the Replaced Elements Model (Wagner, 2003), reproduces many results that have until recently been uniquely predicted by Pearce’s Configural Theory (Pearce, 1994). Although it is possible to simulate the Replaced Elements Model using “standard” simulation programs the generation of the correct stimulus representation is complex. The current paper describes a method for simulation of the Replaced Elements Model and presents the results of two example simulations that show differential predictions of Replaced Elements and Pearce’s Configural Theor

    Acid-Labile Traceless Click Linker for Protein Transduction

    Intracellular delivery of active proteins presents an interesting approach in research and therapy. We created a protein transduction shuttle based on a new traceless click linker that combines the advantages of click reactions with implementation of reversible pH-sensitive bonds. The azidomethyl-methylmaleic anhydride (AzMMMan) linker was found compatible with different click chemistries, demonstrated in bioreversible protein modification with dyes, polyethylene glycol, or a transduction carrier. Linkages were stable at physiological pH but reversible at the mild acidic pH of endosomes or lysosomes. We show that pH-reversible attachment of a defined endosome-destabilizing three-arm oligo(ethane amino)amide carrier generates an effective shuttle for protein delivery. The cargo protein nlsEGFP, when coupled via the traceless AzMMMan linker, experiences efficient cellular uptake and endosomal escape into the cytosol, followed by import into the nucleus. In contrast, irreversible linkage to the same shuttle hampers nuclear delivery of nlsEGFP which after uptake remains trapped in the cytosol. Successful intracellular delivery of bioactive Ăź-galactosidase as a model enzyme was also demonstrated using the pH-controlled shuttle system

    Optical Polarization of 52 Radio-Loud QSOs and BL Lac Objects

    Polarization measurements are presented for 52 radio-loud QSOs and BL Lac objects. For 9 highly polarized (p >3%) AGN, these are the first published polarization measurements. Of these 9, 7 are highly-polarized QSOs (HPQs), one is a BL Lac object and another is a likely BL Lac object. Polarization variability is confirmed for some of these new and previously known highly-polarized AGN. While 6 of the HPQs have flat radio spectra are almost certainly blazars, PKS 1452-217 is probably a new member of the rare class of radio-loud QSOs that show high polarization by scattering, and is therefore important for testing orientation Unified Schemes. In competition for the highest redshift HPQ are the well-observed QSO PKS 0438-43 at z = 2.85, with maximum p = 4.7%, and PKS 0046-315 at z = 2.72, for which we find p = 13%.Comment: 6 pages.     Interferometric Observations of V838 Monocerotis

    We have used long-baseline near-IR interferometry to resolve the peculiar eruptive variable V838 Mon and to provide the first direct measurement of its angular size. Assuming a uniform disk model for the emission we derive an apparent angular diameter at the time of observations (November-December 2004) of 1.83±0.061.83 \pm 0.06 milli-arcseconds. For a nominal distance of 8±28\pm2 kpc, this implies a linear radius of 1570±400R⊙1570 \pm 400 R_{\odot}. However, the data are somewhat better fit by elliptical disk or binary component models, and we suggest that the emission may be strongly affected by ejecta from the outburst.Comment: 12 pages, 1 two-part encapsulated postscript figure.     Exploring complex networks by walking on them

    We carry out a comparative study on the problem for a walker searching on several typical complex networks. The search efficiency is evaluated for various strategies. Having no knowledge of the global properties of the underlying networks and the optimal path between any two given nodes, it is found that the best search strategy is the self-avoid random walk. The preferentially self-avoid random walk does not help in improving the search efficiency further. In return, topological information of the underlying networks may be drawn by comparing the results of the different search strategies.Comment: 5 pages, 5 figure

    Enhancement of the stability of genetic switches by overlapping upstream regulatory domains

    We study genetic switches formed from pairs of mutually repressing operons. The switch stability is characterised by a well defined lifetime which grows sub-exponentially with the number of copies of the most-expressed transcription factor, in the regime accessible by our numerical simulations. The stability can be markedly enhanced by a suitable choice of overlap between the upstream regulatory domains. Our results suggest that robustness against biochemical noise can provide a selection pressure that drives operons, that regulate each other, together in the course of evolution.Comment: 4 pages, 5 figures, RevTeX
