The Effect Of Hydraulic Lift In Quercus agrifolia On The Health Of Venegasia carpesioides

Hydraulic lift was studied in live and dead Quercus agrifolia (Coastal Live Oak) in order to test its impact on surrounding Venegasia carpesioides (Canyon Sunflower). Hydraulic lift causes soil moisture to rise around the base of deep-rooted plants where neighboring plants can utilize this excess water. We predicted that the hydraulic lift of the Coastal Live Oak would increase soil moisture, causing higher stomatal conductance and higher water potential in nearby plants. Pvalues of .5258 and .6392 indicated there were no significant differences in soil moisture or in stomatal conductance of the Canyon Sunflowers. A p-value of .0378 showed a significant difference between the water potentials of the Canyon Sunflowers found around the live trees and dead trees. This shows there is a correlation between hydraulic lift and surrounding plant health

Influence of dietary phytochemicals and microbiota on colon cancer risk.

Colon cancer is the third most commonly diagnosed type of cancer in the United States. Lifestyle and dietary patterns influence colon cancer risk both positively and negatively. Among the dietary factors, several plant-derived compounds have been found to afford colon cancer protection. These compounds potentially influence all aspects of colonic cellular regulation and develop complex interrelationships with the colonic microbiome. Increasing understanding of the role of microorganisms in determining the colonic environment has led to awareness of this important interrelationship among dietary factors and the microbial population. Plant-derived polyphenols are active mediators of cellular events, target key carcinogenic pathways, and modulate colonic microbial populations. In turn, the colonic microorganisms metabolize dietary compounds and mediate cellular events. In addition, the role of estrogen receptors in colon cancer and the importance of dietary components that mediate estrogen receptor-β are increasingly being discovered. Hence, dietary bioactive compounds and the intestinal microbiota create a complex milieu that directly affects the carcinogenic events of the colon. These relationships must be carefully characterized in future research to provide dietary recommendations that will reduce colon cancer risk

Opportunism in buyer-supplier exchange: a critical examination of the concept and its implications for theory and practice

Claims that opportunism is widespread in the process of buyer–supplier exchange are commonplace, but direct supporting evidence for such claims is largely absent from the relevant literature. This article offers a critique of the treatment of opportunism in supply chains by re-establishing the importance of guile in the concept and investigates existing published, empirical measures of buyer and supplier opportunistic behaviour. This article offers evidence that, despite the frequency with which the concept is discussed in the literature and applied in research and the emphasis given to the risks it generates for management, opportunism with guile between buyers and suppliers appears to be rare in practice. This article is the first critical assessment of the concept’s treatment in the Operations Management field, and it argues that practitioners are currently being poorly advised with respect to the phenomenon, as well as drawing conclusions for both practitioners and researchers that differ radically from the prevailing consensus on the subject

Evidence-Based Care in Urgent Care Centers

Concussions are brain injuries--also called mild traumatic brain injuries--that affect the function of the brain temporarily or permanently. The purpose of this doctoral project was to develop an education module for staff at an urgent care center to address the lack of knowledge and low level of comfort regarding the care for patients with a head trauma. This project introduced and educated the clinical staff on an evidence-based protocol for the treatment and management of a patient with a concussion. The Rosswurm and Larrabee model for evidence-based change was used as a foundation for refining the practice question, gathering evidence, and translation of the protocol into the clinical setting. The Dreyfus model of the 5 stages of skill acquisition was used to measure the learners\u27 level of achievement. A pretest and posttest were conducted to determine whether there was a gain in knowledge and confidence as a result of the project. There were 6 participants: 3 nonclinical staff and 3 nurses. Overall, there was a statistically significant improvement in confidence based on the Wilcoxon sign ranks test (z = -2.201; p = .028); however, a statistically significant increase in knowledge was not apparent, even though the scores did improve. All staff members were able to apply the practice guideline and make sound judgments using case studies. This project resulted in the translation of evidenced-based care into the urgent care setting, enhanced the confidence of the nursing staff, and has the potential to bring about positive social change by improving the quality of care that will be provided to patients with head injuries
