Classical Structures Based on Unitaries
Starting from the observation that distinct notions of copying have arisen in
different categorical fields (logic and computation, contrasted with quantum
mechanics) this paper addresses the question of when, or whether, they may
coincide. Provided all definitions are strict in the categorical sense, we show
that this can never be the case. However, allowing for the defining axioms to
be taken up to canonical isomorphism, a close connection between the classical
structures of categorical quantum mechanics, and the categorical property of
self-similarity familiar from logical and computational models becomes
apparent.
The required canonical isomorphisms are non-trivial, and mix both typed
(multi-object) and untyped (single-object) tensors and structural isomorphisms;
we give coherence results that justify this approach.
We then give a class of examples where distinct self-similar structures at an
object determine distinct matrix representations of arrows, in the same way as
classical structures determine matrix representations in Hilbert space. We also
give analogues of familiar notions from linear algebra in this setting such as
changes of basis, and diagonalisation.Comment: 24 pages,7 diagram
Floquet scattering in parametric electron pumps
A Floquet scattering approach to parametric electron pumps is presented and
compared with Brouwer's adiabatic scattering approach [Phys. Rev. B 58, R10135
(1998)] for a simple scattering model with two harmonically oscillating
delta-function barriers. For small strength of oscillating potentials these two
approaches give exactly equivalent results while for large strength, these
clearly deviate from each other. The validity of the adiabatic theory is also
discussed by using the Wigner delay time obtained from the Floquet scattering
matrix.Comment: 10 pages, 7 figure
Quantization of adiabatic pumped charge in the presence of superconducting lead
We investigate the parametric electron pumping of a double barrier structure
in the presence of a superconducting lead. The parametric pumping is
facilitated by cyclic variation of the barrier heights and of the
barriers. In the weak coupling regime, there exists a resonance line in the
parameter space so that the energy of the quasi-bound state is in
line with the incoming Fermi energy. Levinson et al found recently that the
pumped charge for each pumping cycle is quantized with for normal
structure when the pumping contour encircles the resonance line. In the
presence of a superconducting lead, we find that the pumped charge is quantized
with the value
Optimal quantum pump in the presence of a superconducting lead
We investigate the parametric pumping of a hybrid structure consisting of a
normal quantum dot, a normal lead and a superconducting lead. Using the time
dependent scattering matrix theory, we have derived a general expression for
the pumped electric current and heat current. We have also derived the
relationship among the instantaneous pumped heat current, electric current, and
shot noise. This gives a lower bound for the pumped heat current in the hybrid
system similar to that of the normal case obtained by Avron et al
Relaxation Effects in the Transition Temperature of Superconducting HgBa2CuO4+delta
In previous studies on a number of under- and overdoped high temperature
superconductors, including YBa_{2}Cu_{3}O_{7-y} and Tl_{2}Ba_{2}CuO_{6+\delta},
the transition temperature T_c has been found to change with time in a manner
which depends on the sample's detailed temperature and pressure history. This
relaxation behavior in T_c is believed to originate from rearrangements within
the oxygen sublattice. In the present high-pressure studies on
HgBa_{2}CuO_{4+\delta} to 0.8 GPa we find clear evidence for weak relaxation
effects in strongly under- and overdoped samples () with
an activation energy . For overdoped
HgBa_{2}CuO_{4+\delta} E_{A} increases under pressure more rapidly than
previously observed for YBa_{2}Cu_{3}O_{6.41}, yielding an activation volume of
+11 \pm 5 cm^{3}; the dependence of T_c on pressure is markedly nonlinear, an
anomalous result for high-T_c superconductors in the present pressure range,
giving evidence for a change in the electronic and/or structural properties
near 0.4 GPa
The influence of cosmic-rays on the magnetorotational instability
We present a linear perturbation analysis of the magnetorotational
instability in the presence of the cosmic rays. Dynamical effects of the cosmic
rays are considered by a fluid description and the diffusion of cosmic rays is
only along the magnetic field lines. We show an enhancement in the growth rate
of the unstable mode because of the existence of cosmic rays. But as the
diffusion of cosmic rays increases, we see that the growth rate decreases.
Thus, cosmic rays have a destabilizing role in the magnetorotational
instability of the accretion discs.Comment: Accepted for publication in Astrophysics & Space Scienc
BIIL 284 reduces neutrophil numbers but increases P. aeruginosa bacteremia and inflammation in mouse lungs
Background: A clinical study to investigate the leukotriene B4 (LTB4)-receptor antagonist BIIL 284 in cystic fibrosis (CF) patients was prematurely terminated due to a significantly increased risk of adverse pulmonary events. We aimed to establish the effect of BIIL284 in models of Pseudomonas aeruginosa lung infection, thereby contributing to a better understanding of what could have led to adverse pulmonary events in CF patients. Methods: P. aeruginosa DNA in the blood of CF patients during and after acute pulmonary exacerbations and in stable patients with non-CF bronchiectasis (NCFB) and healthy individuals was assessed by PCR. The effect of BIIL 284 treatment was tested in an agar bead murine model of P. aeruginosa lung infection. Bacterial count and inflammation were evaluated in lung and other organs. Results: Most CF patients (98%) and all patients with NCFB and healthy individuals had negative P. aeruginosa DNA in their blood. Similarly, the P. aeruginosa-infected mice showed bacterial counts in the lung but not in the blood or spleen. BIIL 284 treatment decreased pulmonary neutrophils and increased P. aeruginosa numbers in mouse lungs leading to significantly higher bacteremia rates and lung inflammation compared to placebo treated animals. Conclusions: Decreased airway neutrophils induced lung proliferation and severe bacteremia in a murine model of P. aeruginosa lung infection. These data suggest that caution should be taken when administering anti-inflammatory compounds to patients with bacterial infections
Active Galactic Nuclei at the Crossroads of Astrophysics
Over the last five decades, AGN studies have produced a number of spectacular
examples of synergies and multifaceted approaches in astrophysics. The field of
AGN research now spans the entire spectral range and covers more than twelve
orders of magnitude in the spatial and temporal domains. The next generation of
astrophysical facilities will open up new possibilities for AGN studies,
especially in the areas of high-resolution and high-fidelity imaging and
spectroscopy of nuclear regions in the X-ray, optical, and radio bands. These
studies will address in detail a number of critical issues in AGN research such
as processes in the immediate vicinity of supermassive black holes, physical
conditions of broad-line and narrow-line regions, formation and evolution of
accretion disks and relativistic outflows, and the connection between nuclear
activity and galaxy evolution.Comment: 16 pages, 5 figures; review contribution; "Exploring the Cosmic

Pauli blocking factors in quantum pumps
We investigate the Pauli blocking factor in quantum pumps using Floquet
formalism. Even though the time dependent potentials in quantum pumping can not
only cause inelastic scatterings but also break the micro-reversibility, i.e.
, the Pauli blocking factor is unnecessary when the
scattering process through the scatterer is coherent. The well defined
scattering states extending from one reservoir to the others form a complete
non-orthogonal set. Regardless of the non-orthogonality one can obtain the
pumped currents using the field operator formalism. The current expression
finally obtained do not contain Pauli blocking factor.Comment: 4 pages, 2 figure
