The Muslim Veil in France: Between Power and Silence, between Visibility and Invisibility

    Get PDF
This paper will explore the contingency and ïŹ‚uidity of religious freedom in France and stress the existence of overlapping, competing and coexisting legal discourses in terms of national security and public order. In response to the Muslim veil, changing power structures, changing societal norms and new faces of injustice, established doctrines are reconsidered, reformulated and partly replaced by competing doctrines and hypotheses. Given the relative indeterminacy of law on the concept of secularism and French neutrality, it is no surprise that the problem of interpretation has always been one of the focal points of attention for legal practice and drafting

Hypercodification de la Common Law: en quĂȘte de sens

Law is, by deïŹnition, the codiïŹcation of modes of expression in a given society. However, its use is distinctive owing to the ways in which users apply or modify it. The shift in meaning between the product and its expression can be analysed not only within its content but also by the means of communication employed. The inïŹ‚uence of spheres from intermediary competences, such as Administration and the Legal Profession is one of the main issues to explore. The linguist’s analysis cannot be limited to language, but should also integrate corporal and sign communication. These interferences are the conveyors of a derived creation and are distinctive from written law countries to common law countries. My paper will focus on the modes of expression in English Law with a view to showing common and original features

N-Terminal Protein Modification by Aminoacyl Transferase: Enzymology and Applications.

Protein modification is an important tool for understanding how a protein moves, folds, and operates in its cellular environment. We aim for a minimalist approach to protein modification in order to learn more about the protein while not perturbing its native state. Our method for ligation of small molecules to proteins has high N-terminal specificity and creates natural amide bond linkages under mild conditions. We utilized E. coli aminoacyl L/F transferase (AaT) in our ligation reaction to recognize a small synthetic substrate analog, which mimics aminoacylated tRNA, and can be chemically synthesized in only three steps. We have studied the mechanism of AaT in order better utilize unnatural substrates and expand the scope of aminoacyl donors and N-terminal acceptors. Using AaT, we can enzymatically attach a wide range of synthetic moieties to the N-termini of peptides and proteins, including natural and unnatural amino acids with reactive azido groups, fluorescent labels, protected disulfides, and photoinducible crosslinkers. This method introduces new opportunities for protein semi-synthesis, which we have applied in two model systems, α-synuclein and calmodulin, and contributes as an effective method to label proteins for biophysical research

The Ghost Of Ravishment That Lingers In The Land: The Beginnings Of Environmentalism In Seraph On The Suwanee And Go Down, Moses

Zora Neale Hurston and William Faulkner are recognized for their environmental writing. However, few scholars have acknowledged the sophisticated environmentalism present in Hurston\u27s Seraph on the Suwanee and Faulkner\u27s fictional depiction of Lafayette County in Go Down, Moses. This thesis seeks to prove that Hurston and Faulkner were keenly aware of the ecological problems of their hometowns through a close reading of each book alongside the environmental history each book was based on, Eatonville, Florida and Lafayette County, Mississippi respectively. Each author\u27s distinct regional environmental knowledge helped Hurston and Faulkner to see larger national and global problems with using land for economic profit

The Paradox of (In)Visibility: Fostering Self-Reflexivity in the Classroom

AbstractThis paper engages with issues of representation, voice, and presence/absence in feminist theorizing in the context of increasingly neo-liberal sites of higher education.
