Incidence of components of metabolic syndrome in the metabolically healthy obese over 9 years follow-up: the Atherosclerosis Risk In Communities study.
BackgroundSome obese adults are not afflicted by the metabolic abnormalities often associated with obesity (the 'metabolically healthy obese' (MHO)); however, they may be at increased risk of developing cardiometabolic abnormalities in the future. Little is known about the relative incidence of individual components of metabolic syndrome (MetSyn).MethodsWe used data from a multicenter, community-based cohort aged 45-64 years at recruitment (the Atherosclerosis Risk In Communities study) to examine the first appearance of any MetSyn component, excluding waist circumference. Body mass index (BMI, kgâm-2) and cardiometabolic data were collected at four triennial visits. Our analysis included 3969 adults who were not underweight and free of the components of MetSyn at the initial visit. Participants were classified as metabolically healthy normal weight (MHNW), overweight (MHOW) and MHO at each visit. Adjusted hazard ratios (HR) and 95% confidence intervals were estimated with proportional hazards regression models.ResultsThe relative rate of developing each risk factor was higher among MHO than MHNW, with the strongest association noted for elevated fasting glucose (MHO vs MHNW, HR: 2.33 (1.77, 3.06)). MHO was also positively associated with elevated triglycerides (HR: 1.63 (1.27, 2.09)), low high-density lipoprotein-cholesterol (HR: 1.68 (1.32, 2.13)) and elevated blood pressure (HR: 1.54 (1.26, 1.88)). A similar, but less pronounced pattern was noted among the MHOW vs MHNW.ConclusionsWe conclude that even among apparently healthy individuals, obesity and overweight are related to more rapid development of at least one cardiometabolic risk factor, and that elevations in blood glucose develop most rapidly
Laser microscopy of tunneling magnetoresistance in manganite grain-boundary junctions
Using low-temperature scanning laser microscopy we directly image electric
transport in a magnetoresistive element, a manganite thin film intersected by a
grain boundary (GB). Imaging at variable temperature allows reconstruction and
comparison of the local resistance vs temperature for both, the manganite film
and the GB. Imaging at low temperature also shows that the GB switches between
different resistive states due to the formation and growth of magnetic domains
along the GB. We observe different types of domain wall growth; in most cases a
domain wall nucleates at one edge of the bridge and then proceeds towards the

Isolas of 2-Pulse Solutions in Homoclinic Snaking Scenarios
Homoclinic snaking refers to the bifurcation structure of symmetric localised roll patterns that are often found to lie on two sinusoidal âsnakingâ bifurcation curves, which are connected by an infinite number of ârungâ segments along which asymmetric localised rolls of various widths exist. The envelopes of all these structures have a unique maximum and we refer to them as symmetric or asymmetric 1-pulses. In this paper, the existence of stationary 1D patterns of symmetric 2-pulses that consist of two well-separated 1-pulses is established. Corroborating earlier numerical evidence, it is shown that symmetric 2-pulses exist along isolas in parameter space that are formed by parts of the snaking curves and the rungs mentioned above
Testing for Antiphospholipid Antibody (aPL) Specificities in Retrospective âNormalâ Cerebral Spinal Fluid (CSF)
Antiphospholipid antibodies (aPL) have been found in the blood of patients with systemic and
neurological disease. The rare reports of aPL in cerebral spinal fluid (CSF) have been limited mostly to
IgG and IgM anticardiolipin (aCL). Our published finding of IgA aPE in the CSF of a young stroke
victim prompted us to establish ânormalâ CSF aPL values for a panel of aPL, which included aCL,
antiphosphatidylserine (aPS), antiphosphatidylethanolamine (aPE) and antiphosphatidylcholine (aPC).
CSF samples were tested by ELISA for IgG, IgM and IgA aPL. In addition, the CSF samples were
tested for activity in the presence and absence of phospholipid (PL) binding plasma-proteins. A total of
24 data points were obtained for each CSF sample.We tested 59 CSF samples obtained from 59 patients
who were undergoing evaluation for systemic or neurologic diseases. All CSF samples had normal
protein, glucose and cell counts. Ten of the 59 CSF samples (17%) had elevated aPL optical density
(OD) values an order of magnitude higher than the other 49 CSF samples for one or more aPL
specificity and/or isotype. One CSF sample had both PL-binding protein dependent and independent
IgG aPE activity. Another CSF sample showed both IgG aPE and aPC reactivity. The remaining eight
CSF samples showed single aPL findings; IgG aPE (5), IgG aPC (1), IgG aCL (1) and IgM aPC (1).
Seven of 10 patients with elevated CSF values were females. As expected, most ânormalâ aPL OD
values were substantially lower in CSF than those we have reported in blood samples from volunteer
blood donors
Design, Development and Testing of the Miniature Autonomous Extravehicular Robotic Camera (Mini AERCam) Guidance, Navigation and Control System
Engineers at NASA Johnson Space Center have designed, developed, and tested a nanosatellite-class free-flyer intended for future external inspection and remote viewing of human spaceflight activities. The technology demonstration system, known as the Miniature Autonomous Extravehicular Robotic Camera (Mini AERCam), has been integrated into the approximate form and function of a flight system. The primary focus has been to develop a system capable of providing external views of the International Space Station. The Mini AERCam system is spherical-shaped and less than eight inches in diameter. It has a full suite of guidance, navigation, and control hardware and software, and is equipped with two digital video cameras and a high resolution still image camera. The vehicle is designed for either remotely piloted operations or supervised autonomous operations. Tests have been performed in both a six degree-of-freedom closed-loop orbital simulation and on an air-bearing table. The Mini AERCam system can also be used as a test platform for evaluating algorithms and relative navigation for autonomous proximity operations and docking around the Space Shuttle Orbiter or the ISS
Gap solitons in Bragg gratings with a harmonic superlattice
Solitons are studied in a model of a fiber Bragg grating (BG) whose local
reflectivity is subjected to periodic modulation. The superlattice opens an
infinite number of new bandgaps in the model's spectrum. Averaging and
numerical continuation methods show that each gap gives rise to gap solitons
(GSs), including asymmetric and double-humped ones, which are not present
without the superlattice.Computation of stability eigenvalues and direct
simulation reveal the existence of completely stable families of fundamental
GSs filling the new gaps - also at negative frequencies, where the ordinary GSs
are unstable. Moving stable GSs with positive and negative effective mass are

Insulin clearance and the incidence of type 2 diabetes in Hispanics and African Americans: the IRAS Family Study.
ObjectiveWe aimed to identify factors that are independently associated with the metabolic clearance rate of insulin (MCRI) and to examine the association of MCRI with incident type 2 diabetes in nondiabetic Hispanics and African Americans.Research design and methodsWe investigated 1,116 participants in the Insulin Resistance Atherosclerosis Study (IRAS) Family Study with baseline examinations from 2000 to 2002 and follow-up examinations from 2005 to 2006. Insulin sensitivity (S(I)), acute insulin response (AIR), and MCRI were determined at baseline from frequently sampled intravenous glucose tolerance tests. MCRI was calculated as the ratio of the insulin dose over the incremental area under the curve of insulin. Incident diabetes was defined as fasting glucose âĽ126 mg/dL or antidiabetic medication use by self-report.ResultsWe observed that S(I) and HDL cholesterol were independent positive correlates of MCRI, whereas fasting insulin, fasting glucose, subcutaneous adipose tissue, visceral adipose tissue, and AIR were independent negative correlates (all P < 0.05) at baseline. After 5 years of follow-up, 71 (6.4%) participants developed type 2 diabetes. Lower MCRI was associated with a higher risk of incident diabetes after adjusting for demographics, lifestyle factors, HDL cholesterol, indexes of obesity and adiposity, and insulin secretion (odds ratio 2.01 [95% CI 1.30-3.10], P = 0.0064, per one-SD decrease in loge-transformed MCRI).ConclusionsOur data showed that lower MCRI predicts the incidence of type 2 diabetes
Antiphospholipid autoantibodies as blood biomarkers for detection of early stage Alzheimer's disease
A robust blood biomarker is urgently needed to facilitate early prognosis for those at risk for Alzheimer's disease (AD). Redox reactive autoantibodies (R-RAAs) represent a novel family of antibodies detectable only after exposure of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF), serum, plasma or immunoglobulin fractions to oxidizing agents. We have previously reported that R-RAA antiphospholipid antibodies (aPLs) are significantly decreased in the CSF and serum of AD patients compared to healthy controls (HCs). These studies were extended to measure R-RAA aPL in serum samples obtained from Alzheimer's Disease Neuroimaging Initiative (ADNI). Serum samples from the ADNI-1 diagnostic groups from participants with mild cognitive impairment (MCI), AD and HCs were blinded for diagnosis and analyzed for R-RAA aPL by ELISA. Demographics, cognitive data at baseline and yearly follow-up were subsequently provided by ADNI after posting assay data. As observed in CSF, R-RAA aPL in sera from the AD diagnostic group were significantly reduced compared to HC. However, the sera from the MCI population contained significantly elevated R-RAA aPL activity relative to AD patient and/or HC sera. The data presented in this study indicate that R-RAA aPL show promise as a blood biomarker for detection of early AD, and warrant replication in a larger sample. Longitudinal testing of an individual for increases in R-RAA aPL over a previously established baseline may serve as a useful early sero-epidemiologic blood biomarker for individuals at risk for developing dementia of the Alzheimer's type
