Improving School Community Cohesion Through Restorative Justice Practices

    Get PDF
Van Allen Elementary is one of 21 elementary schools in the Iowa City Community School District (ICCSD). Van Allen Elementary serves 455 students and has 32 certified educators on staff. ICCSD is a High Reliability School (HRS) with a current focus on level one, which includes leading indicator 1.6: safe, supportive, and collaborative culture. As of October 2023, Van Allen Elementary has 75 total behavior referrals for the 2023-24 school year. There is a restorative team made up of certified educators and the building principal; however, the problem is teachers and administration do not have an adequate amount of training to effectively implement restorative practices in their classrooms and buildings. Research shows the impact of implementing restorative practices as prevention and restoration for a strong school community. The school improvement plan will increase educators\u27 capacity of knowledge about restorative practices and arm them with tools and strategies to increase collective efficacy and staff synergy

Countering the Norm, (Re)authoring Our Lives: The Promise Counterstorytelling Holds as a Research Methodology With LGBTQ Youth and Beyond

    Get PDF
Counterstorytelling, a methodology that is rooted in critical race theory, is undergirded by principles that are beneficial to understanding the experiences of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer-identified (LGBTQ) young people from an intersectional perspective. Counterstorytelling holds promise as a method that creates opportunities for individual transformation and resistance to dominant narratives among young people facing systemic oppression. This article outlines the design and implementation of a counterstorytelling study with LGBTQ youth and reflects on the value and associated challenges of counterstorytelling as a participatory research method

Mass media theory and women's zines on the world wide web

Thesis (M.A.) University of Alaska Fairbanks, 2000Two mass media theories, 'Spiral of Silence theory' and 'Uses and Gratifications theory, ' have been used to explain and evaluate media usage from a feminist perspective. These theories both succeed and fail when used to analyze the World Wide Web as a mass medium. In order to effectively examine so-called 'fringe' groups and their publications on the Web, a new theory is needed that considers the more user-driven interface that the Internet and the World Wide Web provide for users. Using a modest case study of women's Web zines, (online underground magazines) this paper attempts to show how some young women use the World Wide Web to publish a different proportion of ideas and opinions than those currently available in the mainstream mass media, and goes on to show that the two current mass media theories used most by feminists are inadequate for the study of the World Wide Web as a mass medium. This paper takes into consideration historical theoretical approaches to the mass media, as well as the social constructionist principles important to looking at the media from a feminist point of view. Finally, it lays a framework of theoretical assumptions that should be considered when examining the Web as a mass medium

Statistical Analysis of Yeast Nutrient in Hard Cider Brewing

    Get PDF
In brewing, it is widely known that trace elements, particularly zinc, are required by yeast in order to grow and ferment. The most sensitive and time-consuming step of cider production is the fermentation process, and problems encountered during this process can lead to prolonged fermentation time and the deterioration of cider quality. Several studies have been published on the optimal zinc concentration to increase the rate of fermentation, but few have studied this process in quantities that are practical to the average homebrewer. Furthermore, homebrewers more commonly supplement with yeast nutrient rather than zinc, as yeast nutrient is more widely available and easier to use. Given that the use of zinc in increasing fermentation rate has been so widely studied, it may be useful for homebrewers to know if zinc is as useful in increasing fermentation rate on a smaller scale. In this study, we explore different methods of increasing fermentation rate by supplementing with various levels of zinc and yeast nutrient, as well as a combination of zinc and yeast nutrient. We present statistical models that describe specific gravity as a function of time, identify underlying causes of variability in specific gravity, and determine if supplementing with zinc is an effective method of increasing fermentation rate on a smaller scale. The results of this study show that supplementing with the full recommended amount of yeast nutrient is the most effective method of increasing fermentation rate, while the other treatment levels were not significantly different from the control treatment

The Relationship between Empathy and Attitudes toward Government Intervention

    Get PDF
Throughout history, government policy and programs have played integral roles in shaping social services. This article reports the findings of a study that explored the relationship between interpersonal empathy and attitudes toward government intervention among college students. Findings suggest that increased levels of empathy are associated with more positive attitudes toward government intervention. This relationship is even stronger for participants from marginalized identity groups. Nurturing empathy among those engaged in social welfare policy-making may support government efforts that are in the best interest of communities they are intended to help

Using Deferred Income Taxes As A Link Between Intermediate Accounting And Corporate Income Tax Courses

    Get PDF
The accounting curriculum (in fact business colleges in general) often is accused of operating in silos. As a result, it is claimed that students fail to see the connections among the assignments in their separate course work and the necessity to have an integrated understanding to function effectively in the real-world. As a response to the criticism, we use deferred income taxes as a means to help students bridge the gap between their Intermediate Accounting classes and their Corporate Income Tax course. As a bonus, students also: 1.) better understand the difficult topic of deferred income taxes, 2.) better understand Schedule M-1on the corporate tax return, and 3.) gain experience in documentation via the preparation of accounting work papers
