An update on vitamin B12-related gene polymorphisms and B12 status.
Vitamin B12 is an essential micronutrient in humans needed for health maintenance. Deficiency of vitamin B12 has been linked to dietary, environmental and genetic factors. Evidence for the genetic basis of vitamin B12 status is poorly understood. However, advancements in genomic techniques have increased the knowledge-base of the genetics of vitamin B12 status. Based on the candidate gene and genome-wide association (GWA) studies, associations between genetic loci in several genes involved in vitamin B12 metabolism have been identified. The objective of this literature review was to identify and discuss reports of associations between single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in vitamin B12 pathway genes and their influence on the circulating levels of vitamin B12. Relevant articles were obtained through a literature search on PubMed through to May 2017. An article was included if it examined an association of a SNP with serum or plasma vitamin B12 concentration. Beta coefficients and odds ratios were used to describe the strength of an association, and a  < 0.05 was considered as statistically significant. Two reviewers independently evaluated the eligibility for the inclusion criteria and extracted the data. From 23 studies which fulfilled the selection criteria, 16 studies identified SNPs that showed statistically significant associations with vitamin B12 concentrations. Fifty-nine vitamin B12-related gene polymorphisms associated with vitamin B12 status were identified in total, from the following populations: African American, Brazilian, Canadian, Chinese, Danish, English, European ancestry, Icelandic, Indian, Italian, Latino, Northern Irish, Portuguese and residents of the USA. Overall, the data analyzed suggests that ethnic-specific associations are involved in the genetic determination of vitamin B12 concentrations. However, despite recent success in genetic studies, the majority of identified genes that could explain variation in vitamin B12 concentrations were from Caucasian populations. Further research utilizing larger sample sizes of non-Caucasian populations is necessary in order to better understand these ethnic-specific associations

Machine Learning for digital document processing: from layout analysis to metadata extraction
In the last years, the spread of computers and the Internet caused a significant amount of documents to be available in digital format. Collecting them in digital repositories raised problems that go beyond simple acquisition issues, and cause the need to organize and classify them in order to improve the effectiveness and efficiency of the retrieval procedure. The success of such a process is tightly related to the ability of understanding the semantics of the document components and content. Since the obvious solution of manually creating and maintaining an updated
index is clearly infeasible, due to the huge amount of data under consideration,
there is a strong interest in methods that can provide solutions for automatically
acquiring such a knowledge. This work presents a framework that intensively exploits intelligent techniques to support different tasks of automatic document processing from acquisition to indexing, from categorization to storing and retrieval.
The prototypical version of the system DOMINUS is presented, whose main characteristic is the use of a Machine Learning Server, a suite of different inductive
learning methods and systems, among which the more suitable for each specific document
processing phase is chosen and applied. The core system is the incremental
first-order logic learner INTHELEX. Thanks to incrementality, it can continuously update and refine the learned theories, dynamically extending its knowledge to handle even completely new classes of documents.
Since DOMINUS is general and flexible, it can be embedded as a document management engine into many different Digital Library systems. Experiments in a real-world domain scenario, scientific conference management, confirmed the good
performance of the proposed prototype
Hydrologic refugia, plants, and climate change.
Climate, physical landscapes, and biota interact to generate heterogeneous hydrologic conditions in space and over time, which are reflected in spatial patterns of species distributions. As these species distributions respond to rapid climate change, microrefugia may support local species persistence in the face of deteriorating climatic suitability. Recent focus on temperature as a determinant of microrefugia insufficiently accounts for the importance of hydrologic processes and changing water availability with changing climate. Where water scarcity is a major limitation now or under future climates, hydrologic microrefugia are likely to prove essential for species persistence, particularly for sessile species and plants. Zones of high relative water availability - mesic microenvironments - are generated by a wide array of hydrologic processes, and may be loosely coupled to climatic processes and therefore buffered from climate change. Here, we review the mechanisms that generate mesic microenvironments and their likely robustness in the face of climate change. We argue that mesic microenvironments will act as species-specific refugia only if the nature and space/time variability in water availability are compatible with the ecological requirements of a target species. We illustrate this argument with case studies drawn from California oak woodland ecosystems. We posit that identification of hydrologic refugia could form a cornerstone of climate-cognizant conservation strategies, but that this would require improved understanding of climate change effects on key hydrologic processes, including frequently cryptic processes such as groundwater flow

Enhancing Consistency in Sentencing: Exploring the Effects of Guidelines in England and Wales
Objectives: The development and application of methods to assess consistency in sentencing before and after the 2011 England and Wales assault guideline came into force. Methods: We use the Crown Court Sentencing Survey to compare the goodness of fit of two regression analyses of sentence length on a set of legal factors before and after the assault guideline came into force. We then monitor the dispersion of residuals from these regressions models across time. Finally, we compare the variance in sentence length of equivalent types of offences using exact matching. Results: We find that legal factors can explain a greater portion of variability in sentencing after the guideline was implemented. Furthermore, we detect that the unexplained variability in sentencing decreases steadily during 2011, while results from exact matching point to a statistically significant average reduction in the variance of sentence length amongst same types of offences. Conclusions: We demonstrate the relevance of two new methods that can be used to produce more robust assessments regarding the evolution of consistency in sentencing, even in situations when only observational non-hierarchical data is available. The application of these methods showed an improvement in consistency during 2011 in England and Wales, although this positive effect cannot be conclusively ascribed to the implementation of the new assault guideline
Effect of meal sequence on postprandial lipid, glucose and insulin responses in young men
Objective: To investigate whether the postprandial changes in plasma triacylglycerol (TAG), nonesterified fatty acids (NEFA), glucose and insulin concentrations in young men were the same if an identical meal was fed at breakfast and lunch, and if the response to lunch was modified by consumption of breakfast.Methods: In two trials (1 and 2) healthy subjects (age 22±1 y, body mass index 22±2 kg/m2) were fed the same mixed macronutrient meal at breakfast at 08:00 h and lunch at 14:00 h. In the third trial, no breakfast was fed and the overnight fast extended until lunch at 14:00 h. Addition of [1,1,1-13C]tripalmitin to one meal in each trial was used to distinguish between endogenous and meal-derived lipids.Results: The postprandial changes in TAG, NEFA and glucose concentrations were similar in trials 1 and 2. The change in plasma total TAG concentration was about two fold less (P<0.05) after lunch compared to breakfast. Postprandial NEFA suppression was the same after breakfast and lunch. Glucose and insulin responses were significantly greater following lunch suggesting decreasing insulin sensitivity during the day. Consumption of breakfast did not alter the postprandial total TAG or NEFA responses after lunch. Measurement of [13C]palmitic acid concentration showed that handling of TAG and NEFA from the meal was the same after breakfast and lunch, and was not altered by consumption of breakfast.Conclusions: Overall, these data suggest that in young, healthy men regulation of plasma TAG from endogenous sources, principally VLDL, but not chylomicrons during the postprandial period leads to differences in the magnitude of lipaemic response when the same meal was consumed at breakfast or at lunch 6 h later.<br/
