Risk-cost optimization of buried pipelines using subset simulation

    Get PDF
On the basis of time-dependent reliability analysis, a computational framework called subset simulation (SS) has been applied for risk-cost optimization of flexible underground pipeline networks. SS can provide better resolution for rare failure events that are commonly encountered in pipeline engineering applications. Attention in this work is devoted to scrutinize the robustness of SS in risk-cost optimization of pipelines. SS is first employed to estimate the reliability of flexible underground pipes subjected to externally applied loading and material corrosion. Then SS is extended to determine the intervention year for maintenance and to identify the most appropriate renewal solution and renewal priority by minimizing the risk of failure and whole life-cycle cost. The efficiency of SS compared to genetic algorithm has been demonstrated by numerical studies with a view to prevent unexpected failure of flexible pipes at minimal cost by prioritizing maintenance based on failure severity and system reliability. This paper shows that SS is a more robust method in the decision-making process of reliability-based management for underground pipeline networks

Climate change, water management and stakeholder analysis in the Dongjiang River basin in South China

    Get PDF
This article proposes a systematic analysis of water management and allocation on the scale of a river basin, considering climate impacts and stakeholder networks in the Dongjiang River basin in South China. Specific approaches are integrated to explore various subtopics. Findings indicate a slight increase of precipitation in the basin and strong fluctuations in this century due to climate extremes, which may lead to seasonal or quality-related water shortages. It is highlighted that alternative options for holistic water management are needed in the basin, and participatory water allocation mechanisms and establishment of a basin-wide management framework could be helpful

The United Kingdom Acid Waters Monitoring Network Data Report for 2005-2006 (year 18)

    Get PDF
The UK Acid Waters Monitoring Network (UKAWMN) has been operating continuously since 1988. During the first ten years biological and chemical data were summarised in an annual series of printed reports From the year 2000 annual data reports have also been available from the UKAWMN web page. These are of a similar format to earlier annual reports but focus on graphical representations of time trends in raw data and diagnostic statistics (e.g. species richness and diversity indices). Detailed analysis of data is presented in two interpretative reports, Monteith (2005) and Monteith and Evans (2000) dealing with 15 and 10 years of accumulated results respectively. Both are also available on the UKAWMN web page. A full description of sampling methods and analytical procedures, together with site descriptions, are also presented on the UKAWMN web page
