High-dimensional Bell test for a continuous variable state in phase space and its robustness to detection inefficiency
We propose a scheme for testing high-dimensional Bell inequalities in phase
space. High-dimensional Bell inequalities can be recast into the forms of a
phase-space version using quasiprobability functions with the complex-valued
order parameter. We investigate their violations for two-mode squeezed states
while increasing the dimension of measurement outcomes, and finally show the
robustness of high-dimensional tests to detection inefficiency.Comment: 8 pages, 2 figures; title and abstract changed, published versio
Systematic assessment of HER2/neu in gynecologic neoplasms, an institutional experience.
BackgroundHER2/neu overexpression and/or amplification has been widely studied in a number of solid tumors, primarily in the breast. In gynecologic neoplasms, determination of HER2/neu status has not been well studied as a predictive biomarker in anti-HER2/neu treatment.MethodsWe systematically evaluated the HER2/neu reactions by immunohistochemistry and fluorescent in situ hybridization in malignant gynecologic neoplasms as experienced in our institution.ResultsThe HER2/neu overexpression or amplification occurred in 8 % of the cancers of the gynecological organs in our series. Majority of the HER2/neu overexpression and/or amplification occurred in clear cell (27 %) and serous (11 %) carcinomas. HER2/neu positivity was also seen in undifferentiated as well as in mixed clear cell and serous carcinomas. Discordant IHC and FISH results (positive by FISH but not IHC) was seen in 2 cases. Majority of the HER2/neu overexpression and/or amplification occurs in the endometrium rather than the ovary. Heterogeneity of the HER2/neu by IHC staining was in < 2 % of the tumors in our series.ConclusionsWe recommend the HER2/neu studies on Müllerian carcinomas of clear cell, serous, and undifferentiated types, particularly when they arise in the endometrium. Since there are some discordant IHC/FISH results, we also propose performing the HER2/neu testing by FISH when the IHC score is less than 3 +
Excitation spectroscopy of vortex lattices in a rotating Bose-Einstein condensate
Excitation spectroscopy of vortex lattices in rotating Bose-Einstein
condensates is described. We numerically obtain the Bogoliubov-deGenne
quasiparticle excitations for a broad range of energies and analyze them in the
context of the complex dynamics of the system. Our work is carried out in a
regime in which standard hydrodynamic assumptions do not hold, and includes
features not readily contained within existing treatments.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures. Submitted for publicatio
Testing quantum nonlocality by generalized quasiprobability functions
We derive a Bell inequality based on a generalized quasiprobability function
which is parameterized by one non-positive real value. Two types of known Bell
inequalities formulated in terms of the Wigner and Q functions are included as
limiting cases. We investigate violations of our Bell inequalities for single
photon entangled states and two-mode squeezed vacuum states when varying the
detector efficiency. We show that the Bell inequality for the Q function allows
the lowest detection efficiency for violations of local realism.Comment: 6 pages, 3 figure
Generating a Schr\"odinger-cat-like state via a coherent superposition of photonic operations
We propose an optical scheme to generate a superposition of coherent states
with enhanced size adopting an interferometric setting at the single-photon
level currently available in the laboratory. Our scheme employs a nondegenerate
optical parametric amplifier together with two beam splitters so that the
detection of single photons at the output conditionally implements the desired
superposition of second-order photonic operations. We analyze our proposed
scheme by considering realistic on-off photodetectors with nonideal efficiency
in heralding the success of conditional events. A high-quality performance of
our scheme is demonstrated in view of various criteria such as quantum
fidelity, mean output energy, and measure of quantum interference
Prioritized LT Codes
The original Luby Transform (LT) coding scheme is extended to account for data transmissions where some information symbols in a message block are more important than others. Prioritized LT codes provide unequal error protection (UEP) of data on an erasure channel by modifying the original LT encoder. The prioritized algorithm improves high-priority data protection without penalizing low-priority data recovery. Moreover, low-latency decoding is also obtained for high-priority data due to fast encoding. Prioritized LT codes only require a slight change in the original encoding algorithm, and no changes at all at the decoder. Hence, with a small complexity increase in the LT encoder, an improved UEP and low-decoding latency performance for high-priority data can be achieved. LT encoding partitions a data stream into fixed-sized message blocks each with a constant number of information symbols. To generate a code symbol from the information symbols in a message, the Robust-Soliton probability distribution is first applied in order to determine the number of information symbols to be used to compute the code symbol. Then, the specific information symbols are chosen uniform randomly from the message block. Finally, the selected information symbols are XORed to form the code symbol. The Prioritized LT code construction includes an additional restriction that code symbols formed by a relatively small number of XORed information symbols select some of these information symbols from the pool of high-priority data. Once high-priority data are fully covered, encoding continues with the conventional LT approach where code symbols are generated by selecting information symbols from the entire message block including all different priorities. Therefore, if code symbols derived from high-priority data experience an unusual high number of erasures, Prioritized LT codes can still reliably recover both high- and low-priority data. This hybrid approach decides not only "how to encode" but also "what to encode" to achieve UEP. Another advantage of the priority encoding process is that the majority of high-priority data can be decoded sooner since only a small number of code symbols are required to reconstruct high-priority data. This approach increases the likelihood that high-priority data is decoded first over low-priority data. The Prioritized LT code scheme achieves an improvement in high-priority data decoding performance as well as overall information recovery without penalizing the decoding of low-priority data, assuming high-priority data is no more than half of a message block. The cost is in the additional complexity required in the encoder. If extra computation resource is available at the transmitter, image, voice, and video transmission quality in terrestrial and space communications can benefit from accurate use of redundancy in protecting data with varying priorities
Moment Rotation Behavior for Concrete Filled SHS Column to Composite Beam Connections
A series of connection tests were carried out to study the behavior of connections between concrete filled Square Hollow Section(SHS) columns and composite W-section beams. The test connections were four different semi-rigid types selected for application to multi -story building frames. The initial flexural rigidities were estimated by different theories and compared with the simple beam. Moment-roration relations were simulated using a finite element program and a simple power model was proposed to predict the moment-rotation behavior of connections
