Background A sustainable city can be built by the collaboration of social enterprises and businesses. In this proposal, TWGHs BiciLine Cycling Ecotourism Social Enterprise and University Nike Icon (UNI) are chosen to be matched. BiciLine in Yuen Long is established by Tung Wah Group of Hospitals. In order to promote cycling eco-tourism in West New Territories, BiciLine provides bicycles and trains tour guides, who are the low income, low education and skill level marginalized youth. On the other hand, UNI is an apprenticeship program organized by Nike yearly. The participants, who are the undergraduates and keen on sports, would join some sports activities to raise Nike\u27s brand popularity and make more people work out. Discussion focus Being difficult to expand the service internationally is the common hardship of social enterprise, and BiciLine is not the exception. The person in charge said that they were not able to embrace the opportunity of serving the foreigners due to the limited capability of providing eco-tours in English. How to help BiciLine tackle the problem becomes the basic focus question. On the other hand, how to make good use of the UNI’s strengths is crucial. The undergraduates are fluent in English and have the passion for sports, probably including cycling. Suggestions It is suggested that UNI participates work as an eco-tour guide in BiciLine for two months. For BiciLine, the managers need to offer information about their daily operation and cycling routes, while UNI participants should teach the existing young eco-tour guides how to introduce the natural ecology in English and how to get along with foreign tourists. Nike can also sponsor the sports supporters for BiciLine such as helmet. Not only can the social enterprise expand its service, but also UNI will establish a positive image and reputation by shouldering the share of social responsibility. Last but not least, corporate partnership increases the awareness of social enterprise and the social obligation of students

Individual attentional capacity to perform safely : developing the workplace attention trifactor scale

xi, 184 leaves : ill. ; 29 cmIncludes abstract and appendices.Includes bibliographical references (leaves 133-146).A self-reported measure of work-related attention capacities was developed and validated in the current dissertation. The 12-item Workplace Attention Trifactor Scale (WATS) was created from the conceptual integration of two streams of psychological research: James Reason’s occupational safety work on human errors, and Posner and Petersen’s cognitive neuroscience work on the three attention networks. Exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses demonstrated the WATS to have three attentional domains. Alerting attention referred to the vigilance and sustained wakefulness during working hours (e.g., “I stayed attentive at work”). Orienting attention referred to the prompt and accurate alignment of attention to the source of the stimuli (e.g., “My eyes were quick to pick up on important details in my work”). Executive control of attention referred to adaptive resolution of conflicting or competing stimuli (e.g., “I was able to prioritize the work tasks that required my immediate attention”). All three domains of the WATS had indirect effects on reports of incidents and injuries at work through work-related cognitive failures of attention. The WATS had good test-retest reliability over a three-month period, with the orienting domain being the most stable (r = .69), alerting (r = .66), then executive control (r = .38). Self-reports on the WATS was compared to performance scores on the Attention Network Test (ANT), a cognitive task that test for the efficiency of the three attention networks. The lack of convergent validity between the two forms of measurement suggested that the WATS and the ANT were tapping into different aspects of attention. In a field setting, the WATS, rather than the ANT, was predictive of informant-reported safety compliance and participation. Theoretical implications of a three-factor model of workplace attention and practical utility of a self-assessed work-related attention measure were discussed

Capturing the dynamics of a work day : ecological momentary assessment of work stressors on the health of long-term caregivers

vi, 72 leaves : ill. ; 29 cm.Includes abstract and appendices.Includes bibliographical references (leaves 52-63).The long-term care sector in Canada is undergoing fundamental transformation. Despite these changes, there is a scarcity of empirical research about the psychological and physiological demands of working in long-term care. The current study aimed to gain a better understanding of this issue by investigating the relationships between experiences at work and psychological and physiological outcomes. Hourly perceived experiences and cardiovascular reactivity during the workdays of 30 female long-term care workers were obtained using diaries and ambulatory blood pressure monitors. Multi-level modeling revealed that work overload, and noisy, fast-paced environments led to higher stress, more negative affectivity, and exacerbated systolic blood pressure reactivity. High quality interactions with residents and break times at work lowered stress and increased positive affectivity. Furthermore, negative affectivity increased systolic and diastolic blood pressure reactivity. Implications for long-term care practices and for occupational health psychology are discussed

Background GLORIA-AF (Global Registry on Long-Term Oral Antithrombotic Treatment in Patients with Atrial Fibrillation) is a prospective, global registry program describing antithrombotic treatment patterns in patients with newly diagnosed nonvalvular atrial fibrillation at risk of stroke. Phase 2 began when dabigatran, the first non\u2013vitamin K antagonist oral anticoagulant (NOAC), became available. Objectives This study sought to describe phase 2 baseline data and compare these with the pre-NOAC era collected during phase 1. Methods During phase 2, 15,641 consenting patients were enrolled (November 2011 to December 2014); 15,092 were eligible. This pre-specified cross-sectional analysis describes eligible patients\u2019 baseline characteristics. Atrial fibrillation disease characteristics, medical outcomes, and concomitant diseases and medications were collected. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics. Results Of the total patients, 45.5% were female; median age was 71 (interquartile range: 64, 78) years. Patients were from Europe (47.1%), North America (22.5%), Asia (20.3%), Latin America (6.0%), and the Middle East/Africa (4.0%). Most had high stroke risk (CHA2DS2-VASc [Congestive heart failure, Hypertension, Age  6575 years, Diabetes mellitus, previous Stroke, Vascular disease, Age 65 to 74 years, Sex category] score  652; 86.1%); 13.9% had moderate risk (CHA2DS2-VASc = 1). Overall, 79.9% received oral anticoagulants, of whom 47.6% received NOAC and 32.3% vitamin K antagonists (VKA); 12.1% received antiplatelet agents; 7.8% received no antithrombotic treatment. For comparison, the proportion of phase 1 patients (of N = 1,063 all eligible) prescribed VKA was 32.8%, acetylsalicylic acid 41.7%, and no therapy 20.2%. In Europe in phase 2, treatment with NOAC was more common than VKA (52.3% and 37.8%, respectively); 6.0% of patients received antiplatelet treatment; and 3.8% received no antithrombotic treatment. In North America, 52.1%, 26.2%, and 14.0% of patients received NOAC, VKA, and antiplatelet drugs, respectively; 7.5% received no antithrombotic treatment. NOAC use was less common in Asia (27.7%), where 27.5% of patients received VKA, 25.0% antiplatelet drugs, and 19.8% no antithrombotic treatment. Conclusions The baseline data from GLORIA-AF phase 2 demonstrate that in newly diagnosed nonvalvular atrial fibrillation patients, NOAC have been highly adopted into practice, becoming more frequently prescribed than VKA in Europe and North America. Worldwide, however, a large proportion of patients remain undertreated, particularly in Asia and North America. The development of international tourism does not only show in the increasing number of international tourists but also in the diversified and specialized destinations. The thesis commissioner is Rokua Geopark in Oulu, Finland who is cooperating with other Nordic geoparks in developing international marketing of a Nordic geopark tour for Hong Kong market. The objective of the thesis is to find out possible marketing mix operations and also the features of potential customer group for the tour. The theoretical part was focused on marketing mix (traditional four Ps plus three other Ps) in tourism industry and consumer behavior in tourism including tourist segmentation. Most of the references were from printed literatures and some were electronic resources. The research method was qualitative, including an in-depth interview with the thesis commissioner, an email interview with an eco-travel agency in Hong Kong, and a desktop research of a successful Kenya nature based tour for the Hong Kong market. The research results illustrated some important features of people in Hong Kong who like nature based tour and also showed a general picture of the marketing operations of a nature based tour for the Hong Kong market, which provided insights to the Nordic geopark tour

Daily Mindfulness Is Associated With Recovery Processes Among Coaches : A 4-Week Diary Study

    No full text
Sport coaching is a profession that is often demanding and one in which psychological burnout is problematic. Recovery from work demands is known to be important in preventing burnout, but research has paid little attention to short-term recovery for coaches. The present study therefore focused on day-to-day recovery. Specifically, the authors investigated the role of mindfulness in recovery, given previously established empirical relationships between mindfulness and recovery processes. The authors used an intensive diary study design to gather daily data from a sample of 46 sport coaches, over a period of 28 consecutive days. Multilevel modeling allowed data analysis at the intraindividual level, providing insights into daily recovery processes for individual coaches. The results showed that increases in daily mindfulness, relative to coaches’ individual mean levels, were predictive of higher levels of recovery-related variables (energy and mood) through mechanisms of reduced rumination and improved sleep. The present study highlights mindfulness as a potential path to daily recovery and the prevention of burnout among coaches. The study lays groundwork for the investigation of mindfulness training as a recovery-promoting intervention for coaches, potentially through easily accessible means, such as app-based training delivery and the incorporation of informal mindfulness practice into daily activities

SGO1C is a non-functional isoform of Shugoshin and can disrupt sister chromatid cohesion by interacting with PP2A–B56

    No full text
<p>Shugoshin (SGO1) plays a pivotal role in sister chromatid cohesion during mitosis by protecting the centromeric cohesin from mitotic kinases and WAPL. Mammalian cells contain at least 6 alternatively spliced isoforms of SGO1. The relationship between the canonical SGO1A with shorter isoforms including SGO1C remains obscure. Here we show that SGO1C was unable to replace the loss of SGO1A. Instead, expression of SGO1C alone induced aberrant mitosis similar to depletion of SGO1A, promoting premature sister chromatid separation, activation of the spindle-assembly checkpoint, and mitotic arrest. In disagreement with previously published data, we found that SGO1C localized to kinetochores. However, the ability to induce aberrant mitosis did not correlate with its kinetochore localization. SGO1C mutants that abolished binding to kinetochores still triggered premature sister chromatid separation. We provide evidence that SGO1C-mediated mitotic arrest involved the sequestering of PP2A–B56 pool. Accordingly, SGO1C mutants that abolished binding to PP2A localized to kinetochores but did not induce aberrant mitosis. These studies imply that the expression of SGO1C should be tightly regulated to prevent dominant-negative effects on SGO1A and genome instability.</p
