    Universal entropy of word ordering across linguistic families

    Background The language faculty is probably the most distinctive feature of our species, and endows us with a unique ability to exchange highly structured information. In written language, information is encoded by the concatenation of basic symbols under grammatical and semantic constraints. As is also the case in other natural information carriers, the resulting symbolic sequences show a delicate balance between order and disorder. That balance is determined by the interplay between the diversity of symbols and by their specific ordering in the sequences. Here we used entropy to quantify the contribution of different organizational levels to the overall statistical structure of language. Methodology/Principal Findings We computed a relative entropy measure to quantify the degree of ordering in word sequences from languages belonging to several linguistic families. While a direct estimation of the overall entropy of language yielded values that varied for the different families considered, the relative entropy quantifying word ordering presented an almost constant value for all those families. Conclusions/Significance Our results indicate that despite the differences in the structure and vocabulary of the languages analyzed, the impact of word ordering in the structure of language is a statistical linguistic universal

    Identification of the defective NADPH-oxidase component in chronic granulomatous disease: a study of 57 European families

    Chronic Granulomatous Disease (CGD) manifests as a predisposition to infection as a result of defective function of the NADPH oxidase of phagocytic cells. Proteins identified as part of this system include two subunits of a cytochrome b (cytochrome b-245) and two cytosolic factors. The affected oxidase component was determined in 63 CGD patients from 57 families, by Western blotting of extracts of their neutrophils with antibodies to those proteins. 38 (67%) of the families were X-linked with a defect of the beta subunit of the cytochrome. 13 (23%) lacked p47-phox, 3 (5%) p67-phox, and 3 (5%) the alpha subunit of the cytochrome

    In response to various immune challenges, females show better survival than males; the X chromosome has an important role in this immunological advantage. X chromosome-linked diseases are usually restricted to males, who have only one copy of the X chromosome; however, females are more prone to autoimmune diseases, and the X chromosome may be involved in the breakdown of self tolerance. Several hypotheses have been proposed in recent years that support a role for the X chromosome in shaping autoimmune responses. Here, we review the main mechanisms responsible for increased immune activity in females. This provides a survival advantage in the face of pathogenic insult but can also enhance the susceptibility of females to autoimmunity
