The irrepresentable, the repetition and the death instinct: psychoanalysis and neurologic illness

Clinical practice involving the treatment of neurological patients with cognitive impairments has usually had neurology and neuropsychology as its main axes, neglecting psychotherapeutic approaches and prioritizing the rehabilitation of cognitive functions. This essay aims at exploring what may be learned about the psychic organization of neurological patients from the perspective of psychoanalytical treatment, as opposed to evaluating the validity of this method. We introduce the argument that the psychopathological scene developed after the experience and perception of cognitive impairment is placed at the intersection of narcissistic identity pathologies and classic traumatic neuroses, since the traumatic blow established by the disease destabilizes the sense of identity and the continuity of the subjective existence, thus dissolving the cohesion of the ego and both intensifying the action of and amplifying the effects of the death instinct. Consequently, we assume that the concept of the death instinct, far from being a (self) destructive principle, should be understood as having a fulfilling role in psychic survival in the face of a traumatic flood. Finally, we approach a variety of technical considerations and offer a few observations on the aspects of countertransference

Some considerations about the body in the current psychoanalytic scenario

Busca-se levantar indagações centrais acerca da presença do corpo na clínica psicanalítica e na cultura contemporânea. Para tal finalidade, examina-se o quanto essa problemática participa das transformações sociais testemunhadas nas últimas décadas. Em seguida, compara-se o corpo da biologia e o corpo da psicanálise, a fim de enfatizar a especificidade deste último. Esse problema remete à noção psicanalítica de corpo pulsional, aos limites da representação psíquica em psicanálise e à afirmação de que há nesse campo uma permeabilidade entre o registro da pulsão e o da representação. Além desses dois registros, o artigo propõe também incluir o corpo biológico como uma das dimensões do corpo metapsicológico em Freud.This article seeks to raise some central questions about the presence of the body in psychoanalytic clinical practice and contemporary culture. For such, it examines how this problem appears in the social transformations witnessed in the last decades. The biology body and the psychoanalysis body are then compared to emphasize the specificity of the latter. This problem refers to the psychoanalytic notion of the drive body, to the limits of psychic representation in psychoanalysis, and to the assertion that there is, in this field, a basic indiscernibility between the context of the drive and that of representation. In addition to these two aspects, the article highlights the importance of including the biological body as one of the dimensions of the metapsychological body in Freud

Which Body for Psychoanalysis? A Short Essay on the Body's Problem in the Work of Freud

The freudian theory does not present a concept of the “Body”, although it is there as an implicit problem. But which is the that Body psychoanalysis deals with, after all? The objective of this article is to demonstrate that Freud did not consider the Body only in its symbolic and imaginary aspects, having always taken in account the fact that the Body is also substance, being its biology equally determinant, in greater or minor degree, of what happens in the individual. To demonstrate it, three thematics are investigated: (1) the concept of drive, understood as a point of connection between the Body as an organism and the Body as a subject, (2) the constitution of the Ego on a corporal basis that determines it and (3) the hysterical symptoms and the notion of somatic complacency, which introduces the consideration of the organic and biological materiality of the Body in the etiology of the conversive symptoms

Psicologia e biologia: algumas interseções

Certains concepts importants pour la compréhension de limportance de la biologie contemporaine pour la psychologie ont été sélectionnés, afin dexaminer les possibilités de rapprochement entre les deux champs. Pour cela, dabord, certaines questions théoriques, méthodologiques et épistémologiques impliqués dans le rapprochement entre la psychologie et la biologie, qui sont souvent négligés, sont presentés. Ensuite, un bref historique de lévolution de la biologie et de certains de leurs crédits à dautres champs théoriques au cours du XXe siècle ont été faites. Après une brève présentation des approches théoriques que ont eu lieu entre les deux domaines de connaissance, il est suggéré que ce serait un premier pas en cause et à un dialogue éclairé entre les deux champs.São selecionados alguns conceitos relevantes para o entendimento da importância da biologia contemporânea para a psicologia com o objetivo de analisar as possibilidades de aproximação entre os dois campos. Para isso, primeiramente são apresentadas algumas questões teóricas, metodológicas e epistemológicas envolvidas na aproximação entre psicologia e biologia, que com frequência são negligenciadas. A seguir, faz-se um breve histórico dos desenvolvimentos da biologia e de algumas de suas apropriações de outros campos teóricos no decorrer do século XX. Após breve apresentação das aproximações teóricas já realizadas entre os dois campos de saber em questão, sugere-se que esse seria um primeiro passo para uma interlocução informada e interessada entre ambos os campos.Aiming at analyzing the possibilities of approximation between the fields of biology and psychology, the article selects key concepts relevant to the understanding of the importance of contemporary biology. Firstly it presents some often neglected theoretical, methodological and epistemological questions involved in the approximation between psychology and biology. Afterwards, it describes a brief historical account of the developments of biology and some of their appropriations by other theoretical fields in the course of the Twentieth Century. After a brief presentation of the theoretical approximations already done between the fields, it suggests that this movement constitutes a first step towards an informed and interested interlocution between these two fields.Son seleccionados algunos conceptos relevantes a la comprensión de la importancia de la biología contemporánea a la psicología a fin de examinar las posibilidades de acercamiento entre los dos campos. Para eso, primero hay que presentarse algunas cuestiones teóricas, metodológicas y epistemológicas que participan en el acercamiento entre la psicología y la biología, que a menudo son descuidadas. Después, preséntase una breve historia de la evolución de la biología y algunos de sus créditos de otros campos teóricos durante el siglo XX. Después de una breve presentación de los enfoques teóricos que se han llevado a cabo entre los dos campos del conocimiento en cuestión, se sugiere que ese sería un primer paso para un diálogo informado y interesado entre los dos campos

O FEMININO E A MATERNIDADE NA PSICANÁLISE FREUDIANA: REFLEXÕES CRÍTICAS

O presente artigo discute a visão freudiana de feminilidade e maternidade. Propõe-se, inicialmente, uma contextualização sócio-histórica de Sigmund Freud (1856-1939). Destacam-se como influências importantes nos escritos do autor, a cultura patriarcal, as ideias iluministas de complementaridade e o ideal romântico de feminilidade. O artigo analisa como estas influências aparecem na teoria freudiana sobre o feminino. É realizado um estudo sobre o conceito de Complexo de Édipo para a realização de uma análise crítica da visão freudiana sobre o que seria um desenvolvimento saudável da feminilidade, que envolveria a realização da maternidade como destino ideal

O pré-discursivo na teoria lacaniana

L'objectif de cet article est de cerner l'entrée en scène du prédiscursif dans la théorie lacanienne. Pour ce faire, on parcourra la périodisation de l'enseignement de Lacan en trois différents moments que propose Miller. Le premier comporte les dix années initiales de séminaire, étant marqué par l'étude structuraliste des textes freudiens. Le deuxième moment, qui date de 1964, a vu apparaître un nouveau mouvement : alors que la notion de structure représentée par le langage a quitté la place centrale, l'expérience vécue acquiert peu à peu de l'importance. La fin de cet enseignement fût annoncée dès les années 1970. Le Séminaire Encore circonscrivit le début du dernier enseignement de Lacan, étayant le champ prédiscoursif. Ce moment porte comme conséquence clinique la démarcation d'un espace privilégié pour le corps et pour les expériences vécues dans une période préalable à l'acquisition de la parole, ce qui permet une alternative au modèle structural.O objetivo deste artigo é demarcar a entrada em cena do pré-discursivo na teoria lacaniana. Para tal, utilizaremos a divisão esquemática do ensino de Lacan, elaborada por Miller, em três momentos específicos. O primeiro compreende os dez primeiros anos de seminário e é marcado pela leitura estruturalista dos textos freudianos. No segundo, com início em 1964, um movimento pode ser observado: enquanto a noção de estrutura representada pela linguagem deixou de ocupar o lugar central, a experiência vivida conquistou espaço. O fim deste ensino foi anunciado no início da década de 1970. O seminário Mais, ainda circunscreveu o início do último ensino de Lacan que consolidou um lugar para o campo pré-discursivo. A consequência clínica desse período foi a demarcação de um espaço privilegiado para o corpo e para as experiências vividas num período anterior à aquisição da fala, o que forneceu uma alternativa ao modelo estrutural.The aim of this article is to determine the influence of the prediscursive field in Lacanian theory. To do so, we used a schematic division of the teaching of Lacan's theories, as elaborated by Miller, in three specific moments. In the first ten seminars, the Structuralist perspective of Freudian texts is the main theme. In the second moment, which started in 1964, a movement can be observed: while the notion of structure lost the central position, the lived experience became more relevant. The end of the second moment was announced in the early 1970s. The seminar Encore marked the beginning of the last moment, and consolidated a special place to the pre-discursive field. The clinical consequence of this period is an emphasis on the body and the experiences before speech acquisition, which provided an alternative for the structural model

Freud, Brentano e a Concomitância Dependente

In the field of interactions between the physical and the mental, the notion of dependent concomitance is one of the main pillars able to sustain not only Psychoanalysis’ sovereignty, but also that of Psychology as a whole. Formulated by Freud in his manuscript from 1891 regarding aphasias, it is usually associated with the contribution of the British neurologist John Hughlings Jackson. Not contradicting this judgement, the present work aims to examine this notion further in the light of the teachings of the philosopher Franz Brentano, Freud’s professor during his graduation in Medicine. In so doing, we intend to elevate the notion of concomitance beyond its condition of methodological imperative.No campo das interações entre o corporal e o anímico, a noção de concomitância dependente é um dos principais pilares capazes de sustentar a soberania não apenas da psicanálise, mas da psicologia de um modo geral. Formulada por Freud em seu manuscrito sobre as afasias, de 1891, ela é comumente associada à contribuição do neurologista britânico John Hughlings Jackson. Não contrariando este julgamento, o presente trabalho visa examiná-la ainda à luz dos ensinamentos do flósofo Franz Brentano, professor de Freud durante sua graduação em medicina. Polishing Lenses: the Spinozan Power and the Freudian Drive

Nosso objetivo é apontar ressonâncias entre o conceito freudiano de pulsão e o conceito spinozano de potência para que este último amplifique a leitura do primeiro. Assim, começamos pela apresentação do conceito de Deus-natureza na filosofia de Spinoza para circunscrever o conceito de potência. Após demonstrar que o ser humano é expressão modal singular da substância infinita, verificamos em que pontos se poderia aproximar potência de pulsão. Para tanto, relacionamos a definição de pulsão como exigência de trabalho que o corpo faz ao psiquismo à ideia spinozana da mente ser a ideia do corpo. Após apresentarmos o aspecto relacional e a dimensão de alteridade em ambos os conceitos, finalizamos discutindo as problemáticas do dualismo pulsional e da pulsão de morte.Our goal is to point out resonances between the Freudian concept of drive and the Spinozan concept of power to amplify the reading of the first.We begin by presenting the Spinoza’s concept of God-Nature to circumscribe the concept of power. After demonstrating that the human being is the unique modal expression of the infinite substance, we verify the points that could bring together power and drive. Therefore, we relate the definition of drive as a job requirement made by the body to the psyche to Spinoza’s idea of mind being the idea of the body. After presenting the relational aspect and the dimension of otherness in both concepts, we discuss the drive dualism and the death drive
