    Cryptic torrent frogs of myanmar: An examination of the amolops marmoratus species complex with the resurrection of amolops afghanus and the identification of a new species

    We investigated diversity in the Amolops marmoratus species complex within Myanmar using both molecular and morphological characters from recently collected specimens. Based on congruence between multivariate analyses of quantitative morphological characters and phylogenetic analyses of nucleotide variation in the 16S ribosomal gene conducted on 43 out of 182 frogs examined, we recognize A. marmoratus for specimens from the states of Mon and Shan and northern Tanintharyi Division and designate a neotype for this species; resurrect A. afghanus (Gnther, 1858) from synonymy with A. marmoratus for specimens from the northern state of Kachin and designate a lectotype for this species; recognize A. panhai for specimens from Tanintharyi, a new country record; and describe a new species for specimens from the western states of Chin and Rakhine, and Sagaing Division. © 2012 by the American Society of Ichthyologists and Herpetologists

    Effects of tropical browse plants on in vitro rumen protein degradability

    Leaves of Multi-purpose trees (MPT) provide a very important ecosystem service in the form of feed for ruminant livestock in most tropical countries. They are often fed to ruminants as supplements due to their appreciable levels of crude protein and less concentration of recalcitrant cell wall fiber.The presence of condensed tannins in tropical MPT could minimise protein degradation in the rumen, reduce rumen ammonia concentration and ultimately reduce overall dry matter digestibility. In this study, eight MPT (Ceiba pentandra, Khaya senegalensis, Senna siamea, Ficus gnaphalocarpa, Pterocarpus erinaceus, Albizia lebbeck, Azadirachta indica and Gmelina arborea) were incubated with two levels of nitrogen to test the effect of condensed tannin on in vitro ammonia nitrogen concentration. The MPT’s in another experiment were incubated in sacco to determine the extent of protein degradability. The crude protein (CP) of the MPT was in the range of 92.2 to 229 g/kg DM. The neutral detergent fiber (NDF), acid detergent fiber (ADF) and acid detergent lignin (ADL) were in the range of 216-307 g/kg DM, 163.4 to 291 g/kg DM and 94.8-282 g/kg DM respectively. The highest condensed tannin (CT) was obtained in F gnaphalocarpa with no CT detected in A Lebbeck. There was no effect of the MPT and nitrogen buffer interaction on the in vitro gas production parameters at 72 h. There was no difference in in vitro dry matter digestibility (IVDMD) between the two nitrogen (N) buffered rumen fluids. Leaves of MPT incubated in nitrogen sufficient (NSf) buffer consistently had a higher NH3N concentration than the nitrogen deficient (ND). However, the NH3N concentration from the ND buffer remained within levels that ensured IVDMD was not different from that of NSf. The in sacco CP degradation characteristics differed among the leaves at 72 h. A. indica had a higher proportion of its protein content being soluble. The MPT with CT had lower proportion of their protein being degraded particularly in C. pentandra. Ammonia nitrogen concentration was maintained within limits that did not negatively affect IVDMD when the leaves of the MPT were incubated in ND and Nsf

    The effect of supplemented chestnut tannin to grass silage either at ensiling or at feeding on lamb performance, carcass characteristics and meat quality

    This study was designed to investigate the effect of supplemented chestnut hydrolysable tannin (HT) both at ensiling and at feeding on lamb growth, carcass characteristic, and meat quality. Twenty tons of ryegrass (Lolium perenne) were used to produce silage. The ryegrass was treated at ensiling with one of three additives: 30 g kg-1 DM chestnut HT (GET), an inoculant as a positive control (GI), or water as a negative control (G). Another two treatments were made from ensiled grass by adding the 30 g kg-1 DM of chestnut HT to either positive (GI+T) or negative (GT) control. Forty Suffolk cross Mule lambs were used in this experiment and allocated to receive one of five experimental forage treatments with eight lambs per treatment. The diet consisted of two parts: concentrate and silage. Lambs were fed 215 g DM day-1 lamb of concentrate diet and ad libitum grass silage for seven weeks and then slaughtered. Back fat thickness tended to be lower (p= 0.07) for lambs fed the GT and GI+T treatments compared to lambs in the other experimental groups’ (10.0, 10.1, 9.8, 10.0, and 9.8 mm for GET, G, GT, GI, and GI+T, respectively). Feeding lambs GET tended to reduce (p= 0.06) meat lightness (L*) compared to the other treatments. Ammonia nitrogen concentration in rumen fluid was reduced significantly (p 0.05) on voluntary feed intake (914, 916, 899, 928, or 914 g day-1 for GET, G, GT, GI, and GI+T, respectively) or lamb performance

    Progressing the care, husbandry and management of ageing mice used in scientific studies

    Driven by the longer lifespans of humans, particularly in Westernised societies, and the need to know more about ‘healthy ageing’, ageing mice are being used increasingly in scientific research. Many departments and institutes involved with ageing research have developed their own systems to determine intervention points for potential refinements and to identify humane end points. Several good systems are in use, but variations between them could contribute to poor reproducibility of the science achieved. Working with scientific and regulatory communities in the UK, we have reviewed the clinical signs observed in ageing mice and developed recommendations for enhanced monitoring, behaviour assessment, husbandry and veterinary interventions. We advocate that the default time point for enhanced monitoring should be 15 months of age, unless prior information is available. Importantly, the enhanced monitoring should cause no additional harms to the animals. Where a mouse strain is well characterised, the onset of age-related enhanced monitoring may be modified based on knowledge of the onset of an expected age-related clinical sign. In progeroid models where ageing is accelerated, enhanced monitoring may need to be brought forward. Information on the background strain must be considered, as it influences the onset of age-related clinical signs. The range of ageing models currently used means that there will be no ‘one-size fits all’ solution. Increased awareness of the issues will lead to more refined and consistent husbandry of ageing mice, and application of humane end points will help to reduce the numbers of animals maintained for longer than is scientifically justified

    Finite temperature effects in Coulomb blockade quantum dots and signatures of spectral scrambling

    The conductance in Coulomb blockade quantum dots exhibits sharp peaks whose spacings fluctuate with the number of electrons. We derive the temperature-dependence of these fluctuations in the statistical regime and compare with recent experimental results. The scrambling due to Coulomb interactions of the single-particle spectrum with the addition of an electron to the dot is shown to affect the temperature-dependence of the peak spacing fluctuations. Spectral scrambling also leads to saturation in the temperature dependence of the peak-to-peak correlator, in agreement with recent experimental results. The signatures of scrambling are derived using discrete Gaussian processes, which generalize the Gaussian ensembles of random matrices to systems that depend on a discrete parameter -- in this case, the number of electrons in the dot.Comment: 14 pages, 4 eps figures included, RevTe

    Seasonal abundance of small cladocerans in Lake Mangakaware, Waikato, New Zealand

    The seasonal changes in the dynamics and life histories of the Cladocera in Lake Mangakaware, North Island, New Zealand, were studied over 19 months by sampling at weekly or 2-weekly intervals. Lake Mangakaware is a 13.3 ha polymictic lake with high nutrient status, low Secchi disc transparencies, and an unstable thermal regime. The four planktonic cladoceran species (Bosmina longirostris, B. meridionalis, Ceriodaphnia pulchella, and C. dubia) exhibited disjunct population maxima. Only B. longirostris was perennially present. All species exhibited low fecundities and low lipid content, indicating that food resources were limited and that competitive interactions and resistance to starvation were probably important in determining species success. Increases in body size in cooler seasons were unrelated to clutch size, giving further support for the view that available food was limited. These results are consistent with previous experimental findings that subtle differences in life history can determine seasonal success and the outcome of competition between similar species

    Conductance Peak Height Correlations for a Coulomb-Blockaded Quantum Dot in a Weak Magnetic Field

    We consider statistical correlations between the heights of conductance peaks corresponding to two different levels in a Coulomb-blockaded quantum dot. Correlations exist for two peaks at the same magnetic field if the field does not fully break time-reversal symmetry as well as for peaks at different values of a magnetic field that fully breaks time-reversal symmetry. Our results are also relevant to Coulomb-blockade conductance peak height statistics in the presence of weak spin-orbit coupling in a chaotic quantum dot.Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures, REVTeX 4, accepted for publication in Phys.     Attachment Styles Within the Coach-Athlete Dyad: Preliminary Investigation and Assessment Development

    The present preliminary study aimed to develop and examine the psychometric properties of a new sport-specific self-report instrument designed to assess athletes’ and coaches’ attachment styles. The development and initial validation comprised three main phases. In Phase 1, a pool of items was generated based on pre-existing self-report attachment instruments, modified to reflect a coach and an athlete’s style of attachment. In Phase 2, the content validity of the items was assessed by a panel of experts. A final scale was developed and administered to 405 coaches and 298 athletes (N = 703 participants). In Phase 3, confirmatory factor analysis of the obtained data was conducted to determine the final items of the Coach-Athlete Attachment Scale (CAAS). Confirmatory factor analysis revealed acceptable goodness of fit indexes for a 3-first order factor model as well as a 2-first order factor model for both the athlete and the coach data, respectively. A secure attachment style positively predicted relationship satisfaction, while an insecure attachment style was a negative predictor of relationship satisfaction.     The anaerobic digestion of pig carcase with or without sugar beet pulp, as a novel on-farm disposal method

    Anaerobic digestion was investigated as a potential method for on-farm disposal of fallen stock (pig carcases), degrading the carcase material to produce biogas and digestate. The effects of feedstock (sugar beet pulp or pig carcase material or a 50:50 mix) and organic loading rate (50 g-TS L−1 or 100 g-TS L−1), during mesophilic (35 °C) anaerobic digestion were investigated. Anaerobic digestion was achieved for all experimental treatments, however the pig carcase material at the higher organic loading rate produced the second highest methane yield (0.56 Nm3 kg-VS−1 versus a range of 0.14–0.58 Nm3 kg-VS−1 for other treatments), with the highest percentage of methane in total biogas (61.6% versus a range of 36.1–55.2% for all other treatments). Satisfactory pathogen reduction is a legislative requirement for disposal of carcase material. Pathogens were quantified throughout the anaerobic digestion process. Enterococcus faecalis concentrations decreased to negligible levels (2.8 log10 CFU g-TS−1), whilst Clostridium perfringens levels remained unaffected by treatment throughout the digestion process (5.3 ± 0.2 log10 CFU g-TS−1)

    Cosmological parameter estimation using Very Small Array data out to ℓ= 1500

    We estimate cosmological parameters using data obtained by the Very Small Array (VSA) in its extended configuration, in conjunction with a variety of other cosmic microwave background (CMB) data and external priors. Within the flat Λ cold dark matter (ΛCDM) model, we find that the inclusion of high-resolution data from the VSA modifies the limits on the cosmological parameters as compared to those suggested by the Wilkinson Microwave Anisotropy Probe (WMAP) alone, while still remaining compatible with their estimates. We find that Ωbh2= 0.0234+0.0012−0.0014, Ωdmh2= 0.111+0.014−0.016, h= 0.73+0.09−0.05, nS= 0.97+0.06−0.03, 1010AS= 23+7−3 and τ= 0.14+0.14−0.07 for WMAP and VSA when no external prior is included. On extending the model to include a running spectral index of density fluctuations, we find that the inclusion of VSA data leads to a negative running at a level of more than 95 per cent confidence ( nrun=−0.069 ± 0.032 ), something that is not significantly changed by the inclusion of a stringent prior on the Hubble constant. Inclusion of prior information from the 2dF galaxy redshift survey reduces the significance of the result by constraining the value of Ωm. We discuss the veracity of this result in the context of various systematic effects and also a broken spectral index model. We also constrain the fraction of neutrinos and find that fν < 0.087 at 95 per cent confidence, which corresponds to mν < 0.32 eV when all neutrino masses are equal. Finally, we consider the global best fit within a general cosmological model with 12 parameters and find consistency with other analyses available in the literature. The evidence for nrun < 0 is only marginal within this model
