A review of recent research on improvement of physical parameterizations in the GLA GCM
A systematic assessment of the effect of a series of improvements in physical parameterizations of the Goddard Laboratory for Atmospheres (GLA) general circulation model (GCM) are summarized. The implementation of the Simple Biosphere Model (SiB) in the GCM is followed by a comparison of SiB GCM simulations with that of the earlier slab soil hydrology GCM (SSH-GCM) simulations. In the Sahelian context, the biogeophysical component of desertification was analyzed for SiB-GCM simulations. Cumulus parameterization is found to be the primary determinant of the organization of the simulated tropical rainfall of the GLA GCM using Arakawa-Schubert cumulus parameterization. A comparison of model simulations with station data revealed excessive shortwave radiation accompanied by excessive drying and heating to the land. The perpetual July simulations with and without interactive soil moisture shows that 30 to 40 day oscillations may be a natural mode of the simulated earth atmosphere system

A lymphoma plasma membrane-associated protein with ankyrin-like properties.
In this study we have used several complementary techniques to isolate and characterize a 72-kD polypeptide that is tightly associated with a major mouse T-lymphoma membrane glycoprotein, gp 85 (a wheat germ agglutinin-binding protein), in a 16 S complex. These two proteins do not separate in the presence of high salt but can be dissociated by treatment with 2 M urea. Further analysis indicates that the 72-kD protein has ankyrin-like properties based on the following criteria: (a) it cross-reacts with specific antibodies raised against erythrocyte and brain ankyrin; (b) it displays a peptide mapping pattern and a pI (between 6.5 and 6.8) similar to that of the 72-kD proteolytic fragment of erythrocyte ankyrin; (c) it competes with erythrocyte ghost membranes (spectrin-depleted preparations) for spectrin binding; and (d) it binds to purified spectrin and fodrin molecules. Most importantly, in intact lymphoma cells this ankyrin-like protein is localized directly underneath the plasma membrane and is found to be preferentially accumulated beneath receptor cap structures as well as associated with a membrane-cytoskeleton complex preparation. It is proposed that the ankyrin-like 72-kD protein may play an important role in linking certain surface glycoprotein(s) to fodrin which, in turn, binds to actin filaments required for lymphocyte cap formation
Stellar Mixing and the Primordial Lithium Abundance
We compare the properties of recent samples of the lithium abundances in halo
stars to one another and to the predictions of theoretical models including
rotational mixing, and we examine the data for trends with metal abundance. We
find from a KS test that in the absence of any correction for chemical
evolution, the Ryan, Norris, & Beers (1999} sample is fully consistent with
mild rotational mixing induced depletion and, therefore, with an initial
lithium abundance higher than the observed value. Tests for outliers depend
sensitively on the threshold for defining their presence, but we find a
1045% probability that the RNB sample is drawn from the rotationally mixed
models with a 0.2 dex median depletion (with lower probabilities corresponding
to higher depletion factors). When chemical evolution trends (Li/H versus Fe/H)
are treated in the linear plane we find that the dispersion in the RNB sample
is not explained by chemical evolution; the inferred bounds on lithium
depletion from rotational mixing are similar to those derived from models
without chemical evolution. We find that differences in the equivalent width
measurements are primarily responsible for different observational conclusions
concerning the lithium dispersion in halo stars. The standard Big Bang
Nucleosynthesis predicted lithium abundance which corresponds to the deuterium
abundance inferred from observations of high-redshift, low-metallicity QSO
absorbers requires halo star lithium depletion in an amount consistent with
that from our models of rotational mixing, but inconsistent with no depletion.Comment: 39 pages, 9 figures; submitted Ap
Life prediction and constitutive models for engine hot section anisotropic materials program
This report presents a summary of results from a 7 year program designed to develop generic constitutive and life prediction approaches and models for nickel-based single crystal gas turbine airfoils. The program was composed of a base program and an optional program. The base program addressed the high temperature coated single crystal regime above the airfoil root platform. The optional program investigated the low temperature uncoated single crystal regime below the airfoil root platform including the notched conditions of the airfoil attachment. Both base and option programs involved experimental and analytical efforts. Results from uniaxial constitutive and fatigue life experiments of coated and uncoated PWA 1480 single crystal material formed the basis for the analytical modeling effort. Four single crystal primary orientations were used in the experiments: group of zone axes (001), group of zone axes (011), group of zone axes (111), and group of zone axes (213). Specific secondary orientations were also selected for the notched experiments in the optional program. Constitutive models for an overlay coating and PWA 1480 single crystal materials were developed based on isothermal hysteresis loop data and verified using thermomechanical (TMF) hysteresis loop data. A fatigue life approach and life models were developed for TMF crack initiation of coated PWA 1480. A life model was developed for smooth and notched fatigue in the option program. Finally, computer software incorporating the overlay coating and PWA 1480 constitutive and life models was developed
Unified constitutive model for single crystal deformation behavior with applications
Single crystal materials are being used in gas turbine airfoils and are candidates for other hot section components because of their increased temperature capabilities and resistance to thermal fatigue. Development of a constitutive model which assesses the inelastic behavior of these materials has been studied in 2 NASA programs: Life Prediction and Constitutive Models for Engine Hot Section Anisotropic Materials and Biaxial Constitutive Equation Development for Single Crystals. The model has been fit to a large body of constitutive data for single crystal PWA 1480 material. The model uses a unified approach for computing total inelastic strains (creep plus plasticity) on crystallographic slip systems reproducing observed directional and strain rate effects as a natural consequence of the summed slip system quantities. The model includes several of the effects that have been reported to influence deformation in single crystal materials, such as shear stress, latent hardening, and cross slip. The model is operational in a commercial Finite Element code and is being installed in a Boundary Element Method code
Solutions to the tethered galaxy problem in an expanding universe and the observation of receding blueshifted objects
We use the dynamics of a galaxy, set up initially at a constant proper
distance from an observer, to derive and illustrate two counter-intuitive
general relativistic results. Although the galaxy does gradually join the
expansion of the universe (Hubble flow), it does not necessarily recede from
us. In particular, in the currently favored cosmological model, which includes
a cosmological constant, the galaxy recedes from the observer as it joins the
Hubble flow, but in the previously favored cold dark matter model, the galaxy
approaches, passes through the observer, and joins the Hubble flow on the
opposite side of the sky. We show that this behavior is consistent with the
general relativistic idea that space is expanding and is determined by the
acceleration of the expansion of the universe -- not a force or drag associated
with the expansion itself. We also show that objects at a constant proper
distance will have a nonzero redshift; receding galaxies can be blueshifted and
approaching galaxies can be redshifted.Comment: 8 pages including 6 figures, to appear in Am. J. Phys., 2003.

Symmetry of the order parameter in superconducting ZrZn_2
We apply symmetry considerations to study the possible superconducting order
parameters in ferromagnetic ZrZn_2. We predict that the presence and the
location of the superconducting gap nodes depend on the direction of
magnetization M. In particular, if M is directed along the z axis, then the
order parameter should always have zeros. We also discuss how to determine the
gap symmetry in ZrZn_2 using ultrasound attenuation measurements.Comment: 6 pages, submitted to PRB; some corrections and discussion adde
Differentiation of dementia with Lewy bodies from Alzheimer's disease using a dopaminergic presynaptic ligand
Background: Dementia with Lewy bodies (DLB) is one of the main differential diagnoses of Alzheimer's disease (AD). Key pathological features of patients with DLB are not only the presence of cerebral cortical neuronal loss, with Lewy bodies in surviving neurones, but also loss of nigrostriatal dopaminergic neurones, similar to that of Parkinson's disease (PD). In DLB there is 40-70% loss of striatal dopamine. Objective: To determine if detection of this dopaminergic degeneration can help to distinguish DLB from AD during life. Methods: The integrity of the nigrostriatal metabolism in 27 patients with DLB, 17 with AD, 19 drug naive patients with PD, and 16 controls was assessed using a dopaminergic presynaptic ligand, I-123-labelled 2beta-carbomethoxy-3beta-(4-iodophenyl)-N-(3-fluoropropyl)nortropane (FP-CIT), and single photon emission tomography (SPET). A SPET scan was carried out with a single slice, brain dedicated tomograph (SME 810) 3.5 hours after intravenous injection of 185 MBq FP-CIT. With occipital cortex used as a radioactivity uptake reference, ratios for the caudate nucleus and the anterior and posterior putamen of both hemispheres were calculated. All scans were also rated by a simple visual method. Results: Both DLB and PD patients had significantly lower uptake of radioactivity than patients with (p<0.01) and controls (p<0.001) in the caudate nucleus and the anterior and posterior Putamen. Conclusion: FP-CIT SPET provides a means of distinguishing DLB from AD during life
