    Theory of Electron-Phonon Dynamics in Insulating Nanoparticles

    We discuss the rich vibrational dynamics of nanometer-scale semiconducting and insulating crystals as probed by localized electronic impurity states, with an emphasis on nanoparticles that are only weakly coupled to their environment. Two principal regimes of electron-phonon dynamics are distinguished, and a brief survey of vibrational-mode broadening mechanisms is presented. Recent work on the effects of mechanical interaction with the environment is discussed.Comment: Revte

    Association between hepatic triglyceride content and coagulation factors the Netherlands epidemiology of obesity study

    Objective:Whether hepatic triglyceride content (HTGC) contributes to hypercoagulability beyond total body fat (TBF) and visceral adipose tissue (VAT) is unclear. We, therefore, aimed to investigate the association between HTGC and coagulation factors (F)I (fibrinogen), VIII, IX, and XI while adjusting for TBF and VAT.Approach and Results:In this cross-sectional analysis of the NEO study (Netherlands Epidemiology of Obesity; n=6671), a random subset of participants underwent magnetic resonance imaging and magnetic resonance spectroscopy to assess VAT and HTGC (n=2580). We excluded participants without complete imaging and coagulation assessment, and with history of liver disease, venous thrombosis, or on anticoagulation. Mean differences in coagulation factor levels across HTGC quartiles were estimated by linear regression adjusted for age, sex, ethnicity, education, alcohol intake, physical activity, smoking, estrogen, and menopause, in addition to TBF and VAT. Among the 1946 participants included, median HTGC was 2.66% (interquartile range: 1.34%-6.27%). Coagulation factor levels increased dose-dependently across HTGC quartiles. Mean differences between the fourth and first quartiles were 14.7 mg/dL (95% CI, 2.1-27.2) for fibrinogen, 6.7 IU/dL (95% CI, 0.5-12.9) for FVIII, 26.1 IU/dL (95% CI, 22.4-29.8) for FIX, and 8.6 IU/dL (95% CI, 4.6-12.6) for FXI. With further adjustment for TBF and VAT, the dose-response association of HTGC with FIX persisted, whereas associations with other factors disappeared.Conclusions:HTGC was associated with various coagulation factors, of which FIX remained associated with HTGC after adjustment for TBF and VAT. HTGC might contribute to venous thrombosis risk beyond total body and visceral fat through FIX levels.Thrombosis and Hemostasi

    Forward Neutral Pion Production in p + p and d + Au Collisions at √ sNN = 200 GeV

    Measurements of the production of forward π0 mesons from p+p and d+Au collisions at √sNN=200  GeV are reported. The p+p yield generally agrees with next-to-leading order perturbative QCD calculations. The d+Au yield per binary collision is suppressed as η increases, decreasing to ∼30% of the p+p yield at ⟨η⟩=4.00, well below shadowing expectations. Exploratory measurements of azimuthal correlations of the forward π0 with charged hadrons at η≈0 show a recoil peak in p+p that is suppressed in d+Au at low pion energy. These observations are qualitatively consistent with a saturation picture of the low-x gluon structure of heavy nuclei

    We performed an extensive immunogenomic anal-ysis of more than 10,000 tumors comprising 33diverse cancer types by utilizing data compiled byTCGA. Across cancer types, we identified six im-mune subtypes\u2014wound healing, IFN-gdominant,inflammatory, lymphocyte depleted, immunologi-cally quiet, and TGF-bdominant\u2014characterized bydifferences in macrophage or lymphocyte signa-tures, Th1:Th2 cell ratio, extent of intratumoral het-erogeneity, aneuploidy, extent of neoantigen load,overall cell proliferation, expression of immunomod-ulatory genes, and prognosis. Specific drivermutations correlated with lower (CTNNB1,NRAS,orIDH1) or higher (BRAF,TP53,orCASP8) leukocytelevels across all cancers. Multiple control modalitiesof the intracellular and extracellular networks (tran-scription, microRNAs, copy number, and epigeneticprocesses) were involved in tumor-immune cell inter-actions, both across and within immune subtypes.Our immunogenomics pipeline to characterize theseheterogeneous tumors and the resulting data areintended to serve as a resource for future targetedstudies to further advance the field

    Whole-genome sequencing reveals host factors underlying critical COVID-19

    Critical COVID-19 is caused by immune-mediated inflammatory lung injury. Host genetic variation influences the development of illness requiring critical care1 or hospitalization2,3,4 after infection with SARS-CoV-2. The GenOMICC (Genetics of Mortality in Critical Care) study enables the comparison of genomes from individuals who are critically ill with those of population controls to find underlying disease mechanisms. Here we use whole-genome sequencing in 7,491 critically ill individuals compared with 48,400 controls to discover and replicate 23 independent variants that significantly predispose to critical COVID-19. We identify 16 new independent associations, including variants within genes that are involved in interferon signalling (IL10RB and PLSCR1), leucocyte differentiation (BCL11A) and blood-type antigen secretor status (FUT2). Using transcriptome-wide association and colocalization to infer the effect of gene expression on disease severity, we find evidence that implicates multiple genes—including reduced expression of a membrane flippase (ATP11A), and increased expression of a mucin (MUC1)—in critical disease. Mendelian randomization provides evidence in support of causal roles for myeloid cell adhesion molecules (SELE, ICAM5 and CD209) and the coagulation factor F8, all of which are potentially druggable targets. Our results are broadly consistent with a multi-component model of COVID-19 pathophysiology, in which at least two distinct mechanisms can predispose to life-threatening disease: failure to control viral replication; or an enhanced tendency towards pulmonary inflammation and intravascular coagulation. We show that comparison between cases of critical illness and population controls is highly efficient for the detection of therapeutically relevant mechanisms of disease
