Lacunar fractal photon sieves
We present a new family of diffractive lenses whose structure is based on the
combination of two concepts: photon sieve and fractal zone plates with variable
lacunarity. The focusing properties of different members of this family are
examined. It is shown that the sieves provide a smoothing effect on the higher
order foci of a conventional lacunar fractal zone plate. However, the
characteristic self-similar axial response of the fractal zone plates is always
preserved.Comment: 7 pages, 5 figure
Nonlinear delamination buckling and expansion of functionally graded laminated piezoelectric composite shells
AbstractIn this paper, an analytical method is presented to investigate the nonlinear buckling and expansion behaviors of local delaminations near the surface of functionally graded laminated piezoelectric composite shells subjected to the thermal, electrical and mechanical loads, where the mid-plane nonlinear geometrical relation of delaminations is considered. In examples, the effects of thermal loading, electric field strength, the stacking patterns of functionally graded laminated piezoelectric composite shells and the patterns of delaminations on the critical axial loading of locally delaminated buckling are described and discussed. Finally, the possible growth directions of local buckling for delaminated sub-shells are described by calculating the expanding forces along the length and short axis of the delaminated sub-shells
Nucleon-nucleon momentum correlation function for light nuclei
Nucleon-nucleon momentum correlation function have been presented for nuclear
reactions with neutron-rich or proton-rich projectiles using a nuclear
transport theory, namely Isospin-Dependent Quantum Molecular Dynamics model.
The relationship between the binding energy of projectiles and the strength of
proton-neutron correlation function at small relative momentum has been
explored, while proton-proton correlation function shows its sensitivity to the
proton density distribution. Those results show that nucleon-nucleon
correlation function is useful to reflect some features of the neutron- or
proton-halo nuclei and therefore provide a potential tool for the studies of
radioactive beam physics.Comment: Talk given at the 18th International IUPAP Conference on Few-Body

A spatio-temporal description of the abrupt changes in the photospheric magnetic and Lorentz-force vectors during the 2011 February 15 X2.2 flare
The active region NOAA 11158 produced the first X-class flare of Solar Cycle
24, an X2.2 flare at 01:44 UT on 2011 February 15. Here we analyze SDO/HMI
magnetograms covering a 12-hour interval centered at the time of this flare. We
describe the spatial distributions of the photospheric magnetic changes
associated with this flare, including the abrupt changes in the field vector,
vertical electric current and Lorentz force vector. We also trace these
parameters' temporal evolution. The abrupt magnetic changes were concentrated
near the neutral line and in two neighboring sunspots. Near the neutral line,
the field vectors became stronger and more horizontal during the flare and the
shear increased. This was due to an increase in strength of the horizontal
field components near the neutral line, most significant in the horizontal
component parallel to the neutral line but the perpendicular component also
increased in strength. The vertical component did not show a significant,
permanent overall change at the neutral line. The increase in total flux at the
neutral line was accompanied by a compensating flux decrease in the surrounding
volume. In the two sunspots near the neutral line the azimuthal flux abruptly
decreased during the flare but this change was permanent in only one of the
spots. There was a large, abrupt, downward vertical Lorentz force change during
the flare, consistent with results of past analyses and recent theoretical
work. The horizontal Lorentz force acted in opposite directions along each side
of neutral line, with the two sunspots at each end subject to abrupt torsional
forces. The shearing forces were consistent with field contraction and decrease
of shear near the neutral line, whereas the field itself became more sheared as
a result of the flux collapsing towards the neutral line from the surrounding
volume.Comment: DOI 10.1007/s11207-012-0071-0. Accepted for publication in Solar

Thermal Transport Properties of Grey Cast Irons
Thermal diffusivity and thermal conductivity of grey cast iron have been measured as a function of graphite flake morphology, chemical composition, and position in a finished brake rotor. Cast iron samples used for this investigation were cut from ``step block`` castings designed to produce iron with different graphite flake morphologies resulting from different cooling rates. Samples were also machined from prototype alloys and from production brake rotors representing a variation in foundry practice. Thermal diffusivity was measured at room and elevated temperatures via the flash technique. Heat capacity of selected samples was measured with differential scanning calorimetry, and these results were used to calculate the thermal conductivity. Microstructure of the various cast iron samples was quantified by standard metallography and image analysis, and the chemical compositions were determined by optical emission spectroscopy
Neutron/proton ratio of nucleon emissions as a probe of neutron skin
The dependence between neutron-to-proton yield ratio () and neutron
skin thickness () in neutron-rich projectile induced reactions is
investigated within the framework of the Isospin-Dependent Quantum Molecular
Dynamics (IQMD) model. The density distribution of the Droplet model is
embedded in the initialization of the neutron and proton densities in the
present IQMD model. By adjusting the diffuseness parameter of neutron density
in the Droplet model for the projectile, the relationship between the neutron
skin thickness and the corresponding in the collisions is obtained.
The results show strong linear correlation between and
for neutron-rich Ca and Ni isotopes. It is suggested that may be used
as an experimental observable to extract for neutron-rich nuclei,
which is very significant to the study of the nuclear structure of exotic
nuclei and the equation of state (EOS) of asymmetric nuclear matter.Comment: 7 pages, 5 figures; accepted by Phys. Lett.
Generalized Froggatt-Nielsen Mechanism
In this paper, we propose a Generalized Froggatt-Nielsen mechanism in which
non-renormalizable operators involving a GUT group and non-singlet
Higgs field are introduced. Thus the GUT gauge symmetry breaking and the
generation of hierarchical flavor hierarchy have a common origin in this
mechanism. In this Generalized Froggatt-Nielsen mechanism, we propose
universality conditions for coefficients corresponding to different
contractions in the group productions. We find that the predictions in
Generalized Froggatt-Nielsen mechanism for SU(5) GUT is different to that of
ordinary Froggatt-Nielsen mechanism. Such Generalized Froggatt-Nielsen
mechanism can be used in GUT models when ordinary Froggatt-Nielsen mechanism is
no longer available. We study the application of Generalized Froggatt-Nielsen
mechanism in SO(10) model. We find that realistic standard model mass hierarchy
and mixings can be obtained both in SU(5) and SO(10) GUT models with such
Generalized Froggatt-Nielsen mechanism.Comment: 4 pages, no figure
Magnetocaloric effect and magnetostructural coupling in Mn0.92Fe0.08CoGe compound
The structural properties of Mn0.92Fe0.08CoGe have been investigated in detail using synchrotron x-ray diffraction in zero and applied pressure (p = 0-10 GPa). A ferromagnetic transition occurs around TC = 300 K and a large magnetic-entropy change -ΔSM = 17.3 J/kg K detected at TC for a field change of ΔB = 5 T. The field dependence of -ΔSM max can be expressed as -ΔSM max ∞ B. At ambient temperature and pressure, Mn0.92Fe0.08CoGe exhibits a co-existence of the orthorhombic TiNiSi-type structure (space group Pnma) and hexagonal Ni2In-type structure (space group P63/mmc). Application of external pressure drives a structure change from the orthorhombic TiNiSi-type structure to the hexagonal Ni2In-type structure. A large anomaly in heat capacity around TC is detected and the Debye temperature θD (=319(±10) K) has been derived from analyses of the low temperature heat capacity, T ≲ 10 K
