Effects of tillage, stubble, gypsum, and nitrogen fertiliser on cereal cropping on a red-brown earth in south-west Queensland
We describe effects of a range of fallow and crop management practices on soil properties and crop growth in wheat and grain sorghum on a red-brown earth in south-west Queensland. Results from the first 4 years of the experiment, which commenced in 1983, have been published. This paper reports results from the next 6 years. No tillage (NT) and reduced tillage (RT), combined with stubble retention, resulted in better soil-water storage during fallow but less soil nitrate-nitrogen (N) at sowing than observed with more frequent and aggressive mechanical tillage treatments such as discing, and stubble removal. In drier growing seasons, when N application often resulted in yield reductions in wheat, NT and RT with stubble retention resulted in higher grain yields than other treatments in both crops. In a wetter growing season, when N application resulted in yield increases, wheat yields under NT and RT with stubble retention were lower than those of other treatments, even at the highest rate of N application, indicating that factors such as plant disease were also affecting yields. With stubble retention, average yields of 6 wheat crops were 12% higher under NT and reduced blade tillage, and average yields of 4 sorghum crops were 20-30% higher under NT, than other tillage treatments. Gypsum application resulted in an average yield increase of 15% in both crops under conventional disc tillage with stubble retention. In wheat, NT and RT with stubble retention were generally associated with lower grain protein concentration, and N application was necessary to maximise profitability of these practices
Renormalization of the asymptotically expanded Yang-Mills spectral action
We study renormalizability aspects of the spectral action for the Yang-Mills
system on a flat 4-dimensional background manifold, focusing on its asymptotic
expansion. Interpreting the latter as a higher-derivative gauge theory, a
power-counting argument shows that it is superrenormalizable. We determine the
counterterms at one-loop using zeta function regularization in a background
field gauge and establish their gauge invariance. Consequently, the
corresponding field theory can be renormalized by a simple shift of the
spectral function appearing in the spectral action.
This manuscript provides more details than the shorter companion paper, where
we have used a (formal) quantum action principle to arrive at gauge invariance
of the counterterms. Here, we give in addition an explicit expression for the

Z boson pair production at LHC in a stabilized Randall-Sundrum scenario
We study the Z boson pair production at LHC in the Randall-Sundrum scenario
with the Goldberger-Wise stabilization mechanism. It is shown that
comprehensive account of the Kaluza-Klein graviton and radion effects is
crucial to probe the model: The KK graviton effects enhance the cross section
of on the whole so that the resonance peak of the radion becomes
easy to detect, whereas the RS effects on the process are
rather insignificant. The and invariant-mass distributions are presented
to study the dependence of the RS model parameters. The production of
longitudinally polarized Z bosons, to which the SM contributions are
suppressed, is mainly due to KK gravitons and the radion, providing one of the
most robust methods to signal the RS effects. The sensitivity bounds
on with are also obtained such that
the effective weak scale of order 5 TeV can be experimentally

PDF and scale uncertainties of various DY distributions in ADD and RS models at hadron colliders
In the extra dimension models of ADD and RS we study the dependence of the
various parton distribution functions on observable of Drell-Yan process to NLO
in QCD at LHC and Tevatron energies. Uncertainties at LHC due to factorisation
scales in going from leading to next-to-leading order in QCD for the various
distributions get reduced by about 2.75 times for a range . Further uncertainties arising from the error on experimental

RS1 Cosmology as Brane Dynamics in an AdS/Schwarzschild Bulk
We explore various facets of the cosmology of the Randall-Sundrum scenario
with two branes by considering the dynamics of the branes moving in a bulk
AdS/Schwarzschild geometry. This approach allows us both to understand in more
detail and from a different perspective the role of the stabilization of the
hierarchy in the brane cosmology, as well as to extend to the situation where
the metric contains a horizon. In particular, we explicitly determine how the
Goldberger-Wise stabilization mechanism perturbs the background bulk geometry

Ultrafast carrier relaxation in GaN, In_(0.05)Ga_(0.95)N and an In_(0.05)Ga_(0.95)/In_(0.15)Ga_(0.85)N Multiple Quantum Well
Room temperature, wavelength non-degenerate ultrafast pump/probe measurements
were performed on GaN and InGaN epilayers and an InGaN multiple quantum well
structure. Carrier relaxation dynamics were investigated as a function of
excitation wavelength and intensity. Spectrally-resolved sub-picosecond
relaxation due to carrier redistribution and QW capture was found to depend
sensitively on the wavelength of pump excitation. Moreover, for pump
intensities above a threshold of 100 microJ/cm2, all samples demonstrated an
additional emission feature arising from stimulated emission (SE). SE is
evidenced as accelerated relaxation (< 10 ps) in the pump-probe data,
fundamentally altering the re-distribution of carriers. Once SE and carrier
redistribution is completed, a slower relaxation of up to 1 ns for GaN and
InGaN epilayers, and 660 ps for the MQW sample, indicates carrier recombination

Spin-Flip Noise in a Multi-Terminal Spin-Valve
We study shot noise and cross correlations in a four terminal spin-valve
geometry using a Boltzmann-Langevin approach. The Fano factor (shot noise to
current ratio) depends on the magnetic configuration of the leads and the
spin-flip processes in the normal metal. In a four-terminal geometry, spin-flip
processes are particular prominent in the cross correlations between terminals

A population density grid for Spain
This is an author's accepted manuscript of an article published in "International Journal of Geographical Information Science"; Volume 27, Issue 12, 2013; copyright Taylor & Francis; available online at: http://www.tandfonline.com/doi/abs/10.1080/13658816.2013.799283This article describes a high-resolution land cover data set for Spain and its application
to dasymetric population mapping (at census tract level). Eventually, this vector layer
is transformed into a grid format. The work parallels the effort of the Joint Research
Centre (JRC) of the European Commission, in collaboration with Eurostat and the
European Environment Agency (EEA), in building a population density grid for the
whole of Europe, combining CORINE Land Cover with population data per commune.
We solve many of the problems due to the low resolution of CORINE Land Cover,
which are especially visible with Spanish data. An accuracy assessment is carried out
from a simple aggregation of georeferenced point population data for the region of
Madrid. The bottom-up grid constructed in this way is compared to our top-down grid.
We show a great improvement over what has been reported from commune data and
CORINE Land Cover, but the improvements seem to come entirely from the higher
resolution data sets and not from the statistical modeling in the downscaling exercise.
This highlights the importance of providing the research community with more detailed
land cover data sets, as well as more detailed population data. The dasymetric grid is

Ionic and electronic structure of sodium clusters up to N=59
We determined the ionic and electronic structure of sodium clusters with even
electron numbers and 2 to 59 atoms in axially averaged and three-dimensional
density functional calculations. A local, phenomenological pseudopotential that
reproduces important bulk and atomic properties and facilitates structure
calculations has been developed. Photoabsorption spectra have been calculated
for , , and to
. The consistent inclusion of ionic structure considerably
improves agreement with experiment. An icosahedral growth pattern is observed
for to . This finding is supported by
