Sensitive gravity-gradiometry with atom interferometry: progress towards an improved determination of the gravitational constant
We here present a high sensitivity gravity-gradiometer based on atom
interferometry. In our apparatus, two clouds of laser-cooled rubidium atoms are
launched in fountain configuration and interrogated by a Raman interferometry
sequence to probe the gradient of gravity field. We recently implemented a
high-flux atomic source and a newly designed Raman lasers system in the
instrument set-up. We discuss the applications towards a precise determination
of the Newtonian gravitational constant G. The long-term stability of the
instrument and the signal-to-noise ratio demonstrated here open interesting
perspectives for pushing the measurement precision below the 100 ppm level
Stability of Transonic Shock Solutions for One-Dimensional Euler-Poisson Equations
In this paper, both structural and dynamical stabilities of steady transonic
shock solutions for one-dimensional Euler-Poission system are investigated.
First, a steady transonic shock solution with supersonic backgroumd charge is
shown to be structurally stable with respect to small perturbations of the
background charge, provided that the electric field is positive at the shock
location. Second, any steady transonic shock solution with the supersonic
background charge is proved to be dynamically and exponentially stable with
respect to small perturbation of the initial data, provided the electric field
is not too negative at the shock location. The proof of the first stability
result relies on a monotonicity argument for the shock position and the
downstream density, and a stability analysis for subsonic and supersonic
solutions. The dynamical stability of the steady transonic shock for the
Euler-Poisson equations can be transformed to the global well-posedness of a
free boundary problem for a quasilinear second order equation with nonlinear
boundary conditions. The analysis for the associated linearized problem plays
an essential role
Loss of mGlu5 receptors in somatostatin-expressing neurons alters negative emotional states
Subtype 5 metabotropic glutamate receptors (mGlu5) are known to play an important role in regulating cognitive, social and valence systems. However, it remains largely unknown at which circuits and neuronal types mGlu5 act to influence these behavioral domains. Altered tissue- or cell-specific expression or function of mGlu5 has been proposed to contribute to the exacerbation of neuropsychiatric disorders. Here, we examined how these receptors regulate the activity of somatostatin-expressing (SST+) neurons, as well as their influence on behavior and brain rhythmic activity. Loss of mGlu5 in SST+ neurons elicited excitatory synaptic dysfunction in a region and sex-specific manner together with a range of emotional imbalances including diminished social novelty preference, reduced anxiety-like behavior and decreased freezing during retrieval of fear memories. In addition, the absence of mGlu5 in SST+ neurons during fear processing impaired theta frequency oscillatory activity in the medial prefrontal cortex and ventral hippocampus. These findings reveal a critical role of mGlu5 in controlling SST+ neurons excitability necessary for regulating negative emotional states
Universal Crossover between Efros-Shklovskii and Mott Variable-Range-Hopping Regimes
A universal scaling function, describing the crossover between the Mott and
the Efros-Shklovskii hopping regimes, is derived, using the percolation picture
of transport in strongly localized systems. This function is agrees very well
with experimental data. Quantitative comparison with experiment allows for the
