Tuning electronic structures via epitaxial strain in Sr2IrO4 thin films
We have synthesized epitaxial Sr2IrO4 thin-films on various substrates and
studied their electronic structures as a function of lattice-strains. Under
tensile (compressive) strains, increased (decreased) Ir-O-Ir bond-angles are
expected to result in increased (decreased) electronic bandwidths. However, we
have observed that the two optical absorption peaks near 0.5 eV and 1.0 eV are
shifted to higher (lower) energies under tensile (compressive) strains,
indicating that the electronic-correlation energy is also affected by in-plane
lattice-strains. The effective tuning of electronic structures under
lattice-modification provides an important insight into the physics driven by
the coexisting strong spin-orbit coupling and electronic correlation.Comment: 9 pages, 5 figures, 1 tabl
Multiple conducting carriers generated in LaAlO3/SrTiO3 heterostructures
We have found that there is more than one type of conducting carriers
generated in LaAlO3/SrTiO3 heterostructures by comparing the sheet carrier
density and mobility from optical transmission spectroscopy with those from
dc-transport measurements. When multiple types of carriers exist, optical
characterization dominantly reflects the contribution from the high-density
carriers whereas dc-transport measurements may exaggerate the contribution of
the high-mobility carriers even though they are present at low-density. Since
the low-temperature mobilities determined by dc-transport in the LaAlO3/SrTiO3
heterostructures are much higher than those extracted by optical method, we
attribute the origin of high-mobility transport to the low-density conducting
carriers.Comment: 3 figures, supplemental materia
Tunable magnetic interaction at the atomic scale in oxide heterostructures
We report on a systematic study of a number of structurally identical but
chemically distinct transition metal oxides in order to determine how the
material-specific properties such as the composition and the strain affect the
properties at the interface of heterostructures. Our study considers a series
of structures containing two layers of ferromagnetic SrRuO3, with
antiferromagnetic insulating manganites sandwiched in between. The results
demonstrate how to control the strength and relative orientation of interfacial
ferromagnetism in correlated electron materials by means of valence state
variation and substrate-induced strain, respectively
Forage Yield and Nutritive Value of Spring Oats for Various Cultivars and Planting Dates at the Middle Mountain Area
The experiment was carried out to determine the optimum cultivars and effects of planting date on growth, forage yield and nutritive value of spring sown oats (Avena sativa L.) at the middle mountainous area, Namwon, NLRI, Korea, 1998. The cultivars used in this study was Cayuse, Swan, Foothill, Cashel, Martlock and Winjardie, and the planting dates were 9, 14, 19, 24 and 29 March, and all the forages were harvested on 9 June. Swan among spring oats was the earliest heading type (21 May), and then Martlock (25 May), Winjardie (27 May), and Foothill was the latest (14 June). Dry matter yield was not significantly different (P\u3e 0.05) among six spring oats, except Martlock. Nutritive value was higher in late-maturing cutivars than those of early-maturing types. As the planting date was earlier, the heading date was shortened, and the forage yield was tended to increase. In conclusion, spring oats can be successfully produced by seeding of early March using early-maturing cultivars for more forage production, hay-making during late May, and planting of subsequent forages at the mountainous area in Korea
Two-Dimensional Confinement of 3d1 Electrons in LaTiO3/LaAlO3 Multilayers
We report spectroscopic ellipsometry measurements of the anisotropy of the
interband transitions parallel and perpendicular to the planes of
(LaTiO3)n(LaAlO3)5 multilayers with n = 1-3. These provide direct information
about the electronic structure of the two-dimensional (2D) 3d^1 state of the Ti
ions. In combination with LDA+U calculations, we suggest that 2D confinement in
the TiO2 slabs lifts the degeneracy of the t_{2g} states leaving only the
planar d_xy orbitals occupied. We outline that these multilayers can serve as a
model system for the study of the t_{2g} 2D Hubbard model.Comment: 7 pages, 4 figures. Accepted for publication in Phys. Rev. Let
A performance comparison of the contiguous allocation strategies in 3D mesh connected multicomputers
The performance of contiguous allocation strategies can be significantly affected by the distribution of job execution times. In this paper, the performance of the existing contiguous allocation strategies for 3D mesh multicomputers is re-visited in the context of heavy-tailed distributions (e.g., a Bounded Pareto distribution). The strategies are evaluated and compared using simulation experiments for both First-Come-First-Served (FCFS) and Shortest-Service-Demand (SSD) scheduling strategies under a variety of system loads and system sizes. The results show that the performance of the allocation strategies degrades considerably when job execution times follow a heavy-tailed distribution. Moreover, SSD copes much better than FCFS scheduling strategy in the presence of heavy-tailed job execution times. The results also show that the strategies that depend on a list of allocated sub-meshes for both allocation and deallocation have lower allocation overhead and deliver good system performance in terms of average turnaround time and mean system utilization
Assembly and force measurement with SPM-like probes in holographic optical tweezers
We report a high fidelity tomographic reconstruction of the quantum state of photon pairs generated by parametric down-conversion with orbital angular momentum (OAM) entanglement. Our tomography method allows us to estimate an upper and lower bound for the entanglement between the down-converted photons. We investigate the two-dimensional state subspace defined by the OAM states ±â and superpositions thereof, with â=1, 2, ..., 30. We find that the reconstructed density matrix, even for OAMs up to around â=20, is close to that of a maximally entangled Bell state with a fidelity in the range between F=0.979 and F=0.814. This demonstrates that, although the single count-rate diminishes with increasing â, entanglement persists in a large dimensional state space
