A new evolutionary search strategy for global optimization of high-dimensional problems
Global optimization of high-dimensional problems in practical applications remains a major challenge to the research community of evolutionary computation. The weakness of randomization-based evolutionary algorithms in searching high-dimensional spaces is demonstrated in this paper. A new strategy, SP-UCI is developed to treat complexity caused by high dimensionalities. This strategy features a slope-based searching kernel and a scheme of maintaining the particle population's capability of searching over the full search space. Examinations of this strategy on a suite of sophisticated composition benchmark functions demonstrate that SP-UCI surpasses two popular algorithms, particle swarm optimizer (PSO) and differential evolution (DE), on high-dimensional problems. Experimental results also corroborate the argument that, in high-dimensional optimization, only problems with well-formative fitness landscapes are solvable, and slope-based schemes are preferable to randomization-based ones. Handling boundary constraints for particle swarm optimization in high-dimensional search space
Despite the fact that the popular particle swarm optimizer (PSO) is currently being extensively applied to many real-world problems that often have high-dimensional and complex fitness landscapes, the effects of boundary constraints on PSO have not attracted adequate attention in the literature. However, in accordance with the theoretical analysis in [11], our numerical experiments show that particles tend to fly outside of the boundary in the first few iterations at a very high probability in high-dimensional search spaces. Consequently, the method used to handle boundary violations is critical to the performance of PSO. In this study, we reveal that the widely used random and absorbing bound-handling schemes may paralyze PSO for high-dimensional and complex problems. We also explore in detail the distinct mechanisms responsible for the failures of these two bound-handling schemes. Finally, we suggest that using high-dimensional and complex benchmark functions, such as the composition functions in [19], is a prerequisite to identifying the potential problems in applying PSO to many real-world applications because certain properties of standard benchmark functions make problems inexplicit. A solution to the crucial problem of population degeneration in high-dimensional evolutionary optimization
Three popular evolutionary optimization algorithms are tested on high-dimensional benchmark functions. An important phenomenon responsible for many failures - population degeneration - is discovered. That is, through evolution, the population of searching particles degenerates into a subspace of the search space, and the global optimum is exclusive from the subspace. Subsequently, the search will tend to be confined to this subspace and eventually miss the global optimum. Principal components analysis (PCA) is introduced to discover population degeneration and to remedy its adverse effects. The experiment results reveal that an algorithm's efficacy and efficiency are closely related to the population degeneration phenomenon. Guidelines for improving evolutionary algorithms for high-dimensional global optimization are addressed. An application to highly nonlinear hydrological models demonstrates the efficacy of improved evolutionary algorithms in solving complex practical problems. Ā© 2011 IEEE
Characterization of deep sub-wavelength nanowells by imaging the photon state scattering spectra
Optical-matter interactions and photon scattering in a sub-wavelength space are of great interest in many applications, such as nanopore-based gene sequencing and molecule characterization. Previous studies show that spatial distribution features of the scattering photon states are highly sensitive to the dielectric and structural properties of the nanopore array and matter contained on or within them, as a result of the complex optical-matter interaction in a confined system. In this paper, we report a method for shape characterization of subwavelength nanowells using photon state spatial distribution spectra in the scattering near field. Far-field parametric images of the near-field optical scattering from sub-wavelength nanowell arrays on a SiN substrate were obtained experimentally. Finite-difference time-domain simulations were used to interpret the experimental results. The rich features of the parametric images originating from the interaction of the photons and the nanowells were analyzed to recover the size of the nanowells. Experiments on nanoholes modified with Shp2 proteins were also performed. Results show that the scattering distribution of modified nanoholes exhibits significant differences compared to empty nanoholes. This work highlights the potential of utilizing the photon status scattering of nanowells for molecular characterization or other virus detection applications
Extending twin support vector machine classifier for multi-category classification problems
Ā© 2013 ā IOS Press and the authors. All rights reservedTwin support vector machine classifier (TWSVM) was proposed by Jayadeva et al., which was used for binary classification
problems. TWSVM not only overcomes the difficulties in handling the problem of exemplar unbalance in binary classification problems, but also it is four times faster in training a classifier than classical support vector machines. This paper proposes one-versus-all twin support vector machine classifiers (OVA-TWSVM) for multi-category classification problems by utilizing the strengths of TWSVM. OVA-TWSVM extends TWSVM to solve k-category classification problems by developing k TWSVM where in the ith TWSVM, we only solve the Quadratic Programming Problems (QPPs) for the ith class, and get the ith nonparallel hyperplane corresponding to the ith class data. OVA-TWSVM uses the well known one-versus-all (OVA) approach to construct a corresponding twin support vector machine classifier. We analyze the efficiency of the OVA-TWSVM theoretically, and perform experiments to test its efficiency on both synthetic data sets and several benchmark data sets from the UCI machine learning repository. Both the theoretical analysis and experimental results demonstrate that OVA-TWSVM can outperform the traditional OVA-SVMs classifier. Further experimental comparisons with other multiclass classifiers demonstrated that comparable performance could be achieved. This work is supported in part by the grant

A Sino-German 6cm polarisation survey of the Galactic plane - VIII. Small-diameter sources
Information of small-diameter sources is extracted from the Sino-German 6cm
polarisation survey of the Galactic plane carried out with the Urumqi 25-m
telescope. We performed two-dimensional elliptical Gaussian fits to the 6cm
maps to obtain a list of sources with total-intensity and polarised flux
densities. The source list contains 3832 sources with a fitted diameter smaller
than 16 arcmin and a peak flux density exceeding 30 mJy, so about 5 times the
rms noise, of the total-intensity data. The cumulative source count indicates
completeness for flux densities exceeding about 60 mJy. We identify 125
linearly polarised sources at 6cm with a peak polarisation flux density greater
than 10 mJy, so about 3 times the rms noise, of the polarised-intensity data.
Despite lacking compact steep spectrum sources, the 6cm catalogue lists about
20 percent more sources than the Effelsberg 21cm source catalogue at the same
angular resolution and for the same area. Most of the faint 6cm sources must
have a flat spectrum and are either HII regions or extragalactic. When compared
with the Green Bank 6cm (GB6) catalogue, we obtain higher flux densities for a
number of extended sources with complex structures. Polarised 6cm sources
density are uniformly distributed in Galactic latitude. Their number density
decreases towards the inner Galaxy. More than 80 percent of the polarised
sources are most likely extragalactic. With a few exceptions, the sources have
a higher percentage polarisation at 6cm than at 21cm. Depolarisation seems to
occur mostly within the sources with a minor contribution from the Galactic
foreground emission.Comment: A&A accepted, 9 pages, 5 figures, Tables 1 and 2 are accessible from

The inhabited environment, infrastructure development and advanced urbanization in China's Yangtze River Delta Region
This paper analyzes the relationship among the inhabited environment, infrastructure development and environmental impacts in China's heavily urbanized Yangtze River Delta region. Using primary human environment data for the period 2006-2014, we examine factors affecting the inhabited environment and infrastructure development: urban population, GDP, built-up area, energy consumption, waste emission, transportation, real estate and urban greenery. Then we empirically investigate the impact of advanced urbanization with consideration of cities' differences. Results from this study show that the growth rate of the inhabited environment and infrastructure development is strongly influenced by regional development structure, functional orientations, traffic network and urban size and form. The effect of advanced urbanization is more significant in large and mid-size cities than huge and mega cities. Energy consumption, waste emission and real estate in large and mid-size cities developed at an unprecedented rate with the rapid increase of economy. However, urban development of huge and mega cities gradually tended to be saturated. The transition development in these cities improved the inhabited environment and ecological protection instead of the urban construction simply. To maintain a sustainable advanced urbanization process, policy implications included urban sprawl control polices, ecological development mechanisms and reforming the economic structure for huge and mega cities, and construct major cross-regional infrastructure, enhance the carrying capacity and improvement of energy efficiency and structure for large and mid-size cities
