Fractal index, central charge and fractons
We introduce the notion of fractal index associated with the universal class
of particles or quasiparticles, termed fractons, which obey specific
fractal statistics. A connection between fractons and conformal field
theory(CFT)-quasiparticles is established taking into account the central
charge and the particle-hole duality
, for integer-value of the
statistical parameter. In this way, we derive the Fermi velocity in terms of
the central charge as . The Hausdorff dimension
which labelled the universal classes of particles and the conformal anomaly are
therefore related. Following another route, we also established a connection
between Rogers dilogarithm function, Farey series of rational numbers and the
Hausdorff dimension.Comment: latex, 12 pages, To appear in Mod. Phys. Lett. A (2000
Literature Children - Child as Protagonist
This paper aims to contribute to issues related to social representations of children through the lens of the adult world; we recommend that fosters the child's opportunity to be author and co-author (protagonist) in the production of children's literature and is known to be beyond their textual production considering that all production of children in school (painting, scribbling, drawings, sketches of letters and various signs) is recognized as children's literature
Problems facing construction companies in retention of employees in South Africa : a case study of Gauteng Province
The aim of this article is to look at the experiences, challenges and problems contributing to retention of employees within construction companies. In alleviating job hopping problem mostly in other international countries construction companies through the methods used to retain construction employees. It will investigate the causes of job hopping, determines the current retention strategies and the cost of job hopping to the employers. The article then describes the problems, challenges and experiences that have been encountered in South African construction companies to retain construction employees in their respective companies and in South Africa and proper solutions
Application of radioactive tracers in the study of sediment movement
CER63DWH-WWS5.For presentation at Federal Inter-Agency Sedimentation Conference, Jackson, Mississippi, January 28-February 1, 1963.Radioactive tracer techniques were employed in order to investigate the dispersion and transport of bed material in a test reach of the North Loup River near Purdum, Nebraska. Sand particles, labelled with Iridium-192, were used as tracers to enable observation of the natural dispersion and transport processes. The amount of radioactivity and the number of tracer particles required for the experiment was determined by considering the sensitivity of the radiation-detection system, the characteristics of the test reach, and radiological safety considerations. In the experiment, the tracer particles were released from a line source which extended across the bed of the stream. As the tracer particles were transported and dispersed downstream, their longitudinal and lateral distributions in the bed were observed by periodic surveys with a sled-mounted scintillation detector, and their vertical distribution in the bed was observed by monitoring core samples. Information obtained from a laboratory calibration of the radiation-detection system under simulated field conditions was used to reduce the field data to a set of tracer-particle concentration-distribution curves. The results of the field study indicate a potential for the wide application of radioactive tracer in sediment studies
Should environmental effects be included when performing QTAIM calculations on actinide systems?:a comparison of QTAIM metrics for Cs2UO2Cl4, U(Se2PPh2)4 and Np(Se2PPh2)4 in gas phase, COSMO and PEECM
Quantum Theory of AtomsāināMolecules bond critical point and delocalisation index metrics are calculated for the actinide-element bonds in Cs2UO2Cl4, U(Se2PPh2)4 and Np(Se2PPh2)4, in gas-phase, continuum solvent (COSMO) and via the periodic electrostatic embedded cluster method. The effects of the environment are seen to be very minor, suggesting that they do not account for the differences previously observed between the experimental and theoretical QTAIM Ļb and ā2Ļb for the U-O bonds in Cs2UO2Cl4. With the exception of the local density approximation, there is only a small dependence of the QTAIM metrics on the exchangeācorrelation functional employed
Study Of Spatial Biological Systems Using a Graphical User Interface
Proceedings of the Tenth International Conference on Human-Computer Interaction, Crete, Greece, 22-27 June 2003In this paper, we describe a Graphical User Interface (GUI) designed to manage large quantities of image data of a biological system. After setting the design requirements for the system, we developed an ecology quantification GUI that assists biologists in analysing data. We focus on the main features of the interface and we present the results and an evaluation of the system. Finally, we provide some directions for some future work
Eastern tropical Pacific corals monitor low latitude climate of the past 400 years
EXTRACT (SEE PDF FOR FULL ABSTRACT):
We have measured coral growth band thickness and skeletal stable isotopic composition through a 371-year transect (AD 1583-1954) from a massive specimen of Pavona clavus from the GalƔpagos Islands. ... We observe a general cooling trend during 1860-1954, corresponding to the end of the Little Ice Age, an interval characterized by general warming at many mid-latitude sites. Variance at sunspot cycle frequencies in growth rate, stable isotopic, and trace element composition implies a direct or indirect link between the solar cycle and climate modulation in the eastern Pacific
An exploratory study of influences of mentoring on retention of graduates in the construction sector: a literature
Abstract: The commercial world has long known and dependent on mentoring as a proven technique for developing in house talent, mentoring is undergoing resurgence because business leaders not only recognize the benefits of transmitting knowledge among employees. Organizations today face a challenge concerning the mentoring and retention of key knowledge graduate employees. Changing workforce demographics, distinct by an aging labour force, more competitive recruiting and faster turnover among young graduates are creating exceptional knowledge retention problems in many industries, threating to reduce the capacity for innovation, growth and operational competence. The study describes improved practices that organizations can use to address the threat of lost knowledge caused by changing workforce demographics..
