LANDSAT-4 multispectral scanner (MSS) subsystem radiometric characterization
The multispectral band scanner (mass) and its spectral characteristics are described and methods are given for relating video digital levels on computer compatible tapes to radiance into the sensor. Topics covered include prelaunch calibration procedures and postlaunch radiometric processng. Examples of current data resident on the MSS image processing system are included. The MSS on LANDSAT 4 is compared with the scanners on earlier LANDSAT satellites
Open Space – a collaborative process for facilitating Tourism IT partnerships
The success of IT projects depends on the success of the partnerships on which they are based. However past research by the author has identified a significant rate of failure in these partnerships, predominantly due to an overly technical mindset, leading to the question: “how do we ensure that, as technological solutions are implemented within tourism, due consideration is given to human-centred issues?” The tourism partnership literature is explored for additional insights revealing that issues connected with power, participation and normative positions play a major role. The method, Open Space, is investigated for its ability to engage stakeholders in free and open debate. This paper reports on a one-day Open Space event sponsored by two major intermediaries in the UK travel industry who wanted to consult their business partners. Both the running of the event and its results reveal how Open Space has the potential to address some of the weaknesses associated with tourism partnerships
Anisotropic admixture in color-superconducting quark matter
The analysis of color-superconducting two-flavor deconfined quark matter at
moderate densities is extended to include a particular spin-1 Cooper pairing of
those quarks which do not participate in the standard spin-0 diquark
condensate. (i) The relativistic spin-1 gap Delta' implies spontaneous
breakdown of rotation invariance manifested in the form of the quasi-fermion
dispersion law. (ii) The critical temperature of the anisotropic component is
approximately given by the relation T_c'~ Delta'(T=0)/3. (iii) For massless
fermions the gas of anisotropic Bogolyubov-Valatin quasiquarks becomes
effectively gapless and two-dimensional. Consequently, its specific heat
depends quadratically on temperature. (iv) All collective Nambu-Goldstone
excitations of the anisotropic phase have a linear dispersion law and the whole
system remains a superfluid. (v) The system exhibits an electromagnetic
Meissner effect.Comment: v2: references added, angular dependence of the gap clarified, v3:

Bulk viscosity in kaon-condensed color-flavor locked quark matter
Color-flavor locked (CFL) quark matter at high densities is a color
superconductor, which spontaneously breaks baryon number and chiral symmetry.
Its low-energy thermodynamic and transport properties are therefore dominated
by the H (superfluid) boson, and the octet of pseudoscalar pseudo-Goldstone
bosons of which the neutral kaon is the lightest. We study the CFL-K^0 phase,
in which the stress induced by the strange quark mass causes the kaons to
condense, and there is an additional ultra-light "K^0" Goldstone boson arising
from the spontaneous breaking of isospin. We compute the bulk viscosity of
matter in the CFL-K^0 phase, which arises from the beta-equilibration processes
K^0H+H and K^0+HH. We find that the bulk viscosity varies as T^7, unlike
the CFL phase where it is exponentially Boltzmann-suppressed by the kaon's
energy gap. However, in the temperature range of relevance for r-mode damping
in compact stars, the bulk viscosity in the CFL-K^0 phase turns out to be even
smaller than in the uncondensed CFL phase, which already has a bulk viscosity
much smaller than all other known color-superconducting quark phases.Comment: 23 pages, 8 figures, v2: references added; minor rephrasings in the

Gamow-Teller strength distributions for nuclei in pre-supernova stellar cores
Electron-capture and -decay of nuclei in the core of massive stars
play an important role in the stages leading to a type II supernova explosion.
Nuclei in the f-p shell are particularly important for these reactions in the
post Silicon-burning stage of a presupernova star. In this paper, we
characterise the energy distribution of the Gamow-Teller Giant Resonance (GTGR)
for mid-fp-shell nuclei in terms of a few shape parameters, using data obtained
from high energy, forward scattering (p,n) and (n,p) reactions. The energy of
the GTGR centroid is further generalised as function of nuclear
properties like mass number, isospin and other shell model properties of the
nucleus. Since a large fraction of the GT strength lies in the GTGR region, and
the GTGR is accessible for weak transitions taking place at energies relevant
to the cores of presupernova and collapsing stars, our results are relevant to
the study of important -capture and -decay rates of arbitrary,
neutron-rich, f-p shell nuclei in stellar cores. Using the observed GTGR and
Isobaric Analog States (IAS) energy systematics we compare the coupling
coefficients in the Bohr-Mottelson two particle interaction Hamiltonian for
different regions of the Isotope Table.Comment: Revtex, 28 pages +7 figures (PostScript Figures, uuencoded, filename:

Breached pairing superfluidity: Possible realization in QCD
We propose a wide universality class of gapless superfluids, and analyze a
limit that might be realized in quark matter at intermediate densities. In the
breached pairing color superconducting phase heavy -quarks, with a small
Fermi surface, pair with light or quarks. The groundstate has a
superfluid and a normal Fermi component simultaneously. We expect a second
order phase transition, as a function of increasing density, from the breached
pairing phase to the conventional color-flavor locked (CFL) phase.Comment: 5 pages, latex, 1 figure; added references; Comment on Ref. [10]

The Mass Spectrum of Light and Heavy Hadrons from Improved Lattice Actions
We use improved lattice actions for glue, light quarks and heavy quarks for
which we use lattice NRQCD to compute hadron masses. Our results are in good
agreement with experiment, except for charmed hadrons. It seems that charmed
quar ks are not well approximated as heavy quarks nor as light quarks.Comment: 14 pages +6 pages figures, plain-tex fil
The Ginzburg-Landau Free Energy Functional of Color Superconductivity at Weak Coupling
We derive the Ginzburg-Landau free energy functional of color
superconductivity in terms of the thermal diagrams of QCD in its perturbative
region. The zero mode of the quadratic term coefficient yields the same
transition temperature, including the pre-exponential factor, as the one
obtained previously from the Fredholm determinant of the two quark scattering
amplitude. All coefficients of the free energy can be made identical to those
of a BCS model by setting the Fermi velocity of the latter equal to the speed
of light. We also calculate the induced symmetric color condensate near
and find that it scales as the cubic power of the dominant antisymmetric color
component. We show that in the presence of an inhomogeneity and a nonzero gauge
potential, while the color-flavor locked condensate dominates in the bulk, the
unlocked condensate, the octet, emerges as a result of a simultaneous
color-flavor rotation in the core region of a vortex filament or at the
junction of super and normal phases.Comment: 32 pages, Plain Tex, 3 figure
Meson Exchange Effect on Color Superconductivity
We investigate the effects of pion and gluon exchanges on the formation of
two-flavor color superconductivity at moderate density, . The
chiral quark model proposed by Manohar and Georgi containing pions as well as
gluons is employed to show that the pion exchange reduces substantially the
value of the superconducting gap gotten with the gluon exchange only. It turns
out that the pion exchanges produce a repulsion between quark-quark pair in a
spin and isospin singlet state.
We suggest that the phase consisiting of pions, gluons and quarks is one of
the candidates of in-medium QCD phase at moderate density.Comment: 8 pages, 1 figure, minor correction
