NASTRAN used in a production environment
A finite element analysis procedure built around the NASTRAN system is assessed. A number of support programs that were either written or modified to interface with NASTRAN and some improvements that were made to NASTRAN itself are noted. Some typical models are analyzed and an actual schedule is followed for constructing and analyzing the models to support a large design program

Milli-second Oscillations in the Persistent and Bursting Flux of Aql X-1 During an Outburst
The Rossi X-Ray Timing Explorer observed the soft X-Ray transient Aql X-1
during its outburst in February and March 1997. We report the discovery of
quasi-periodic oscillations (QPOs) in its persistent flux with frequencies in
the range of 740 to 830 Hz, Q-value of over 100, and a fractional RMS amplitude
of (6.8 +- 0.6)%, and nearly coherent oscillations (NCOs) during a Type-I burst
with a frequency of 549 Hz. The frequency of the QPOs in the persistent flux is
correlated with the mass accretion rate on time scale of hours, but not on time
scale of days. This is most likely the manifestation in a single source of the
kHz QPO puzzle observed among many sources, i.e., on the one hand, individual
sources show a correlation between the QPO frequency and the inferred mass
accretion rate, on the other hand, the dozen or so sources with luminosities
spanning two decades have essentially the same QPO frequencies. We propose that
this multi-valued QPO frequency and mass accretion rate correlation indicates
the existence of many similar regimes of the accretion disk. These regimes,
with a very similar energy spectrum and QPO frequency, are distinguished from
each other by the mass accretion rate or the total X-ray flux. The NCOs during
the burst can be made almost perfectly coherent by taking into account a large
frequency derivative. This strongly suggests that this frequency is related to
the neutron star spin frequency. The large frequency derivative is attributable
to the expansion or contraction of the neutron star photosphere during the

Planning Activity Report for NDE of Adhesive Bonded Structures
Following a workshop held at the Rockwell International Science Center, Thousand Oaks, California in January, 1979, an ad hoc planning activity was undertaken to set forth a program plan to address the needs in NDE for adhesive bonded structures. The objectives of the planning activity were to develop a program rationale and strategy, determine the existence of reasonable approaches, and to propose a detailed plan of action for review at the annual DARPA/AF meeting in September, 1979. The plan encompasses the basic elements of an accept/reject methodology based on fracture mechanics, expected developments of valid flaw growth models, stress analysis, and non-destructive measurement techniques. A central issue is the prospect for determining a valid non-destructive measure of strength for the bonded joint as might be reflected in the tendency for preexistent flaws to propagate under environmental loads
Observed acoustic and aeroelastic spectral responses of a MOD-2 turbine blade to turbulence excitation
Early results from a recent experiment designed to directly evaluate the aeroacoustic/elastic spectral responses of a MOD-2 turbine blade to turbulence-induced unsteady blade loads are discussed. The experimental procedure consisted of flying a hot-film anemometer from a tethered balloon in the turbine inflow and simultaneously measuring the fluctuating airload and aeroelastic response at two blade span stations (65% and 87% spans) using surface-mounted, subminiature pressure transducers and standard strain gage instrumentation. The radiated acoustic pressure field was measured with a triad of very-low-frequency microphones placed at ground level, 1.5 rotor diameters upwind of the disk. Cabozantinib in hepatocellular carcinoma: results of a phase 2 placebo-controlled randomized discontinuation study.
BackgroundCabozantinib, an orally bioavailable inhibitor of tyrosine kinases including MET, AXL, and VEGF receptors, was assessed in patients with hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) as part of a phase 2 randomized discontinuation trial with nine tumor-type cohorts.Patients and methodsEligible patients had Child-Pugh A liver function and ≤1 prior systemic anticancer regimen, completed ≥4 weeks before study entry. The cabozantinib starting dose was 100 mg daily. After an initial 12-week cabozantinib treatment period, patients with stable disease (SD) per Response Evaluation Criteria in Solid Tumors (RECIST) version 1.0 were randomized to cabozantinib or placebo. The primary endpoint of the lead-in stage was objective response rate (ORR) at week 12, and the primary endpoint of the randomized stage was progression-free survival (PFS).ResultsAmong the 41 HCC patients enrolled, the week 12 ORR was 5%, with 2 patients achieving a confirmed partial response (PR). The week 12 disease control rate (PR or SD) was 66% (Asian subgroup: 73%). Of patients with ≥1 post-baseline scan, 78% had tumor regression, with no apparent relationship to prior sorafenib therapy. Alpha-fetoprotein (AFP) response (>50% reduction from baseline) occurred in 9 of the 26 (35%) patients with elevated baseline AFP and ≥1 post-baseline measurement. Twenty-two patients with SD at week 12 were randomized. Median PFS after randomization was 2.5 months with cabozantinib and 1.4 months with placebo, although this difference was not statistically significant. Median PFS and overall survival from Day 1 in all patients were 5.2 and 11.5 months, respectively. The most common grade 3/4 adverse events, regardless of attribution, were diarrhea (20%), hand-foot syndrome (15%), and thrombocytopenia (15%). Dose reductions were utilized in 59% of patients.ConclusionsCabozantinib has clinical activity in HCC patients, including objective tumor responses, disease stabilization, and reductions in AFP. Adverse events were managed with dose reductions.Trial registration numberNCT00940225
Water in Comet 2/2003 K4 (LINEAR) with Spitzer
We present sensitive 5.5 to 7.6 micron spectra of comet C/2003 K4 (LINEAR)
obtained on 16 July 2004 (r_{h} = 1.760 AU, Delta_{Spitzer} = 1.409 AU, phase
angle 35.4 degrees) with the Spitzer Space Telescope. The nu_{2} vibrational
band of water is detected with a high signal-to-noise ratio (> 50). Model
fitting to the best spectrum yields a water ortho-to-para ratio of 2.47 +/-
0.27, which corresponds to a spin temperature of 28.5^{+6.5}_{-3.5} K. Spectra
acquired at different offset positions show that the rotational temperature
decreases with increasing distance from the nucleus, which is consistent with
evolution from thermal to fluorescence equilibrium. The inferred water
production rate is (2.43 +/- 0.25) \times 10^{29} molec. s^{-1}. The spectra do
not show any evidence for emission from PAHs and carbonate minerals, in
contrast to results reported for comets 9P/Tempel 1 and C/1995 O1 (Hale-Bopp).
However, residual emission is observed near 7.3 micron the origin of which
