Tracking and data systems support for the Helios project. Volume 3: DSN support of Project Helios May 1976 - June 1977
Spacecraft extended mission coverage does not generally carry a high priority, but Helios was fortunate in that a combination of separated viewperiods and unique utilization of the STDN Goldstone antenna have provided a considerable amount of additional science data return, particularly at key times such a perihelion and/or solar occultation

Tracking and data systems support for the Helios project. Volume 2: DSN support of Project Helios April 1975 - May 1976
Deep Space Network activities in the development of the Helios B mission from planning through entry of Helios 2 into first superior conjunction (end of Mission Phase II) are summarized. Network operational support activities for Helios 1 from first superior conjunction through entry into third superior conjunction are included
Globular Clusters and Dwarf Spheroidal Galaxies
Traditionally globular clusters and dwarf spheroidal galaxies have been
distinguished by using one or more of the following criteria: (1) mass, (2)
luminosity, (3) size, (4) mass-to-light ratio and (5) spread in metallicity.
However, a few recently discovered objects show some overlap between the
domains in parameter space that are occupied by galaxies and clusters. In the
present note it is shown that ellipticity can, in some cases, be used to help
distinguish between globular clusters and dwarf spheroidal galaxies.Comment: MNRAS (Letters), in pres
Experiments On Delayed Failure During Galvanizing Of Flame-Cut Structural Steels
Cracks have occasionally been found after hot-dip galvanizing of flame-cut structural beams. A project has been completed at CANMET to find the causes of this problem. Experiments have been designed to measure the time-to-failure of notched samples under near-constant load. Cracking during galvanizing is caused by liquid-metal embrittlement, and occurs for critical combinations of stress and susceptible material. Sources of stress are residual stresses including those from flame cutting, and thermal stresses from thermal gradients during hot dipping. Material susceptibility is related primarily to surface hardness, and correlates well with micro-hardness measured at 100 micrometres depth. Remedial measures to eliminate cracking require either reduction of the hardness below a critical level (270 Vickers), or reduction of residual and thermal stresses
Hierarchical formation of Westerlund 1: a collapsing cluster with no primordial mass segregation?
We examine the level of substructure and mass segregation in the massive, young cluster
Westerlund 1. We find that it is relatively smooth, with little or no mass segregation, but with
the massive stars in regions of significantly higher than average surface density. While an
expanding or bouncing-back scenario for the evolution of Westerlund 1 cannot be ruled out,
we argue that the most natural model to explain these observations is one in which Westerlund
1 formed with no primordial mass segregation and at a similar or larger size than we now
observe
