Temperature dependent BCS equations with continuum coupling
The temperature dependent BCS equations are modified in order to include the
contribution of the continuum single particle states. The influence of the
continuum upon the critical temperature corresponding to the phase transition
from a superfluid to a normal state and upon the behaviour of the excitation
energy and of the entropy is discussed.Comment: 9 pages, 3 figures, to appear in Phys. Rev.
Dynamics of Macroscopic Wave Packet Passing through Double Slits: Role of Gravity and Nonlinearity
Using the nonlinear Schroedinger equation (Gross-Pitaevskii equation), the
dynamics of a macroscopic wave packet for Bose-Einstein condensates falling
through double slits is analyzed. This problem is identified with a search for
the fate of a soliton showing a head-on collision with a hard-walled obstacle
of finite size. We explore the splitting of the wave packet and its
reorganization to form an interference pattern. Particular attention is paid to
the role of gravity (g) and repulsive nonlinearity (u_0) in the fringe pattern.
The peak-to-peak distance in the fringe pattern and the number of interference
peaks are found to be proportional to g^(-1/2) and u_0^(1/2)g^(1/4),
respectively. We suggest a way of designing an experiment under controlled
gravity and nonlinearity.Comment: 10 pages, 4 figures and 1 tabl
Characterization of one-dimensional quantum channels in InAs/AlSb
We report the magnetoresistance characteristics of one-dimensional electrons
confined in a single InAs quantum well sandwiched between AlSb barriers. As a
result of a novel nanofabrication scheme that utilizes a 3nm-shallow wet
chemical etching to define the electrostatic lateral confinement, the system is
found to possess three important properties: specular boundary scattering, a
strong lateral confinement potential, and a conducting channel width that is
approximately the lithography width. Ballistic transport phenomena, including
the quenching of the Hall resistance, the last Hall plateau, and a strong
negative bend resistance, are observed at 4K in cross junctions with sharp
corners. In a ring geometry, we have observed Aharonov-Bohm interference that
exhibits characteristics different from those of the GaAs counterpart due to
the ballistic nature of electron transport and the narrowness of the conducting
channel width.Comment: pdf-file, 8 figures, to be published in Phys. Rev.

New Discrete Basis for Nuclear Structure Studies
A complete discrete set of spherical single-particle wave functions for
studies of weakly-bound many-body systems is proposed. The new basis is
obtained by means of a local-scale point transformation of the spherical
harmonic oscillator wave functions. Unlike the harmonic oscillator states, the
new wave functions decay exponentially at large distances. Using the new basis,
characteristics of weakly-bound orbitals are analyzed and the ground state
properties of some spherical doubly-magic nuclei are studied. The basis of the
transformed harmonic oscillator is a significant improvement over the harmonic
oscillator basis, especially in studies of exotic nuclei where the coupling to
the particle continuum is important.Comment: 13 pages, RevTex, 6 p.s. figures, submitted to Phys. Rev.
Cenozoic paleoceanography 1986: An introduction
New developments in Cenozoic paleoceanography include the application of climate models and atmospheric general circulation models to questions of climate reconstruction, the refinement of conceptual models for interpretation of the carbon isotope record in terms of carbon mass balance, paleocirculation, paleoproductivity, and the regional mapping of paleoceanographic events by acoustic stratigraphy. Sea level change emerges as a master variable to which changes in the ocean environment must be traced in many cases, and tests of the onlap-offlap paradigm therefore are of crucial importance
Channel Interference in a Quasi Ballistic Aharonov-Bohm Experiment
New experiments are presented on the transmission of electron waves through a
2DEG (2 dimensional electron gas) ring with a gate on top of one of the
branches. Magnetoconductance oscillations are observed, and the phase of the
Aharanov-Bohm signal alternates between 0 and pi as the gate voltage is
scanned. A Fourier transform of the data reveals a dominant period in the
voltage which corresponds to the energy spacing between successive transverse
modes.A theoretical model including random phase shifts between successive
modes reproduces the essential features of the experiment.Comment: 4 pages, 6 Postscript figures, TEX, submitted to Physical Review

An efficient Fredholm method for calculation of highly excited states of billiards
A numerically efficient Fredholm formulation of the billiard problem is
presented. The standard solution in the framework of the boundary integral
method in terms of a search for roots of a secular determinant is reviewed
first. We next reformulate the singularity condition in terms of a flow in the
space of an auxiliary one-parameter family of eigenproblems and argue that the
eigenvalues and eigenfunctions are analytic functions within a certain domain.
Based on this analytic behavior we present a numerical algorithm to compute a
range of billiard eigenvalues and associated eigenvectors by only two
diagonalizations.Comment: 15 pages, 10 figures; included systematic study of accuracy with 2
