    PRODUCER'S PREFERENCE FOR A COTTON FARMER OWNED RESERVE: AN APPLICATION OF SIMULATION AND STOCHASTIC DOMINANCE

    The benefits to a typical High Plains cotton farmer from a cotton farmer owned reserve were estimated using a firm-level, income tax and farm policy simulation model. Eighteen farm programs were simulated including twelve variations of a farmer owned reserve using different entry prices and trigger prices. The after-tax net present value distributions for the different farm programs were compared using stochastic dominance. The results indicate that risk averse cotton producers should prefer the 1977 farm program to either a cotton farmer owned reserve or the farm program proposed by Secretary of Agriculture Block.Crop Production/Industries,

    Self-employment taxes, "effective" marginal tax rates, and discounting schemes which allow for alternative purchase and disposal dates of machinery are incorporated into the traditional optimal replacement interval model. Empirical results indicate that these alterations decrease the optimal replacement intervals by up to three years from those obtained with traditional modeling assumptions.     Author Institution: Ohio Division of Wildlife, New Marshfield and Department of Food Science and Nutrition, The Ohio State University, ColumbusMilk was collected from eight female gray squirrels (Sciurus carolinensis) and pooled for analysis, in an effort to determine the best substitute for gray squirrel milk for preweaned young squirrels. The sample, about 2 cc, contained 9.0 percent protein, 12.1 percent fat, 3.0 percent lactose, 1.3 percent ash, 0.36 percent calcium, and 0.45 percent phosphorus. This analysis is similar to that reported for two samples from single specimens. Infra-red spectroscopy was used for a portion of the analysis.     Direct measurements of light attenuation by epiphytes on eelgrass \u3cem\u3eZostera marina\u3c/em\u3e

    Declines in the seagrass Zostera marina L. in estuaries and lagoons have been attributed in part to reductions in irradiance reaching the seagrass blades. Epiphytes growing on Z. marina have the potential to attenuate a large fraction of the light that would otherwise reach the blades. This problem has previously been studied by measuring light penetration through homogenized epiphytic slurries or through glass slides fouled with epiphytes. However, the latter may not represent the natural succession or species composition found on live Z. marina leaves and the former does not preserve the structure of the epiphytic complex. Further, past studies have not measured attenuation across the full range of epiphytic densities found in the field. In this study, we measured light penetration across a wide range of epiphytic densities by holding scraped and unscraped Z. marina blades over a submerged light sensor. Results compared well with past studies at low epiphyte densities, with strong reductions in light penetration as density increased. However, at higher densities, penetration leveled off to a relatively constant value as the epiphytes floated out from the edges of the blade. Studies using slurries did not capture this phenomenon and thus predicted decreasing penetration down to 0%

    Emissive (10.5 to 12.5 microns) and reflective (0.55 to 1.1 microns) data for ten day scenes and infrared data for six night scenes of southern Texas were analyzed for plant cover, soil temperature, freeze, water stress, and evapotranspiration. Heat capacity mapping mission radiometric temperatures were: within 2 C of dewpoint temperatures, significantly correlated with variables important in evapotranspiration, and related to freeze severity and planting depth soil temperatures
