The Influence of Physical Features upon the History of Rhode Island

    Get PDF
To affirm that the physical features of the State of Rhode Island have influenced its history is not to deny that the character of its early settlers has exerted an equal, or perhaps a greater influence. It would ill become one who has made a special study of genealogy to ignore the fact that heredity affects the history of a state. If he were inclined to doubt the fact in general, there are too many evidences of that influence in this State to be overlooked. But, at this time, that branch of history is not our topic

    Separator for alkaline batteries

Separator compositions have been tested as components of three-plate silver-zinc oxide cells in a standard cycling test. Six materials meet imposed requirements, giving cycling performance superior to cellophane

Appraisers and the Fair Housing Law: Accessibility Requirements for the Disabled

    Get PDF
In 1988 the Fair Housing Act of 1968 was amended to include the "handicapped" as being protected from discrimination in multiunit housing. The three general categories of discriminatory acts are refusal to make or allow reasonable physical modifications to a covered multiunit dwelling, refusal to make reasonable accommodations in rules and practices, and failure to follow certain design and construction standards. The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development has issued Fair Housing Accessibility Guidelines, which provide technical guidance on multiunit dwelling design and construction standards. This study examines these guidelines and the impact the Act may have upon value when discriminatory practices are observed.

Automated screening of propulsion system test data by neural networks, phase 1

    Get PDF
The evaluation of propulsion system test and flight performance data involves reviewing an extremely large volume of sensor data generated by each test. An automated system that screens large volumes of data and identifies propulsion system parameters which appear unusual or anomalous will increase the productivity of data analysis. Data analysts may then focus on a smaller subset of anomalous data for further evaluation of propulsion system tests. Such an automated data screening system would give NASA the benefit of a reduction in the manpower and time required to complete a propulsion system data evaluation. A phase 1 effort to develop a prototype data screening system is reported. Neural networks will detect anomalies based on nominal propulsion system data only. It appears that a reasonable goal for an operational system would be to screen out 95 pct. of the nominal data, leaving less than 5 pct. needing further analysis by human experts

    Dyes Containing Long-Chained Aliphatic Radicals

    Get PDF
The investigation of the synthesis and properties of compounds containing long-chained aliphatic radicals has been extended to the preparation of several azo dyes, coupling products of ß-naphthol with the appropriately substituted aromatic diazonium chlorides. The dyes prepared include those from a series of three p-alkoxyanilines, ROC6H4NH2, where R is n-C12H25-, n-C14H29-, and n-C16H33-, all deep red in color; and two brighter red compounds from p-( N-alkylsulfonamido )-anilines, H2 NC6H4S02NHR, where R is n-C12H25- and n-C18H37-. These compounds are crystalline solids, soluble in the usual organic solvents and in fats and oils. The melting points of the compounds are such that they might serve as derivatives for the corresponding anilines. The compounds prepared and their melting points are: 1- (p-dodecoxyphenylazo )-2-naphthol, m. 80-82°; 1-(p-tetradecoxyphenylazo )-2-naphthol, m. 81.5-83°; 1-(p-hexadecoxyphenylazo )-2-naphthol, m. 82-84°; 1-[p-(N-dodecylsulfonamido )-phenylazo ]-2-naphthol, m. 163-164 ° ; and 1- [p-( N-octadecylsul fonamido) - phenylazo ]-2-naphthol, m. 158-159.5°
