    Cephalopods from the stomachs of sperm whales taken off California

    Cephalopod remains (beaks, bodies, and parts of bodies) were collected from the stomachs of 157 sperm whales (Physeter macrocephalus) taken off central California (lat. 37°-39°N). At least 24 species representing 14 families were identified. Frequencies of occurrence of the six most numerous taxa were Moroteuthis robusta 72.0%, Gonatopsis borealis 66.2%, Histioteuthis dofleini 36.9%, Galiteuthis spp. (including G. phyllura and G. pacifica) 36.3%, Octopoteuthis deletron 35.0%, and Vampyroteuthis infernalis 27.4%. One find of two Mesonychoteuthis hamiltoni beaks strongly suggests transequatorial migration by one large male sperm whale. (PDF file contains 18 pages.

    Experimental analysis of IMEP in a rotary combustion engine

    A real time indicated mean effective pressure measurement system is described which is used to judge proposed improvements in cycle efficiency of a rotary combustion engine. This is the first self-contained instrument that is capable of making real time measurements of IMEP in a rotary engine. Previous methods used require data recording and later processing using a digital computer. The unique features of this instrumentation include its ability to measure IMEP on a cycle by cycle, real time basis and the elimination of the need to differentiate volume function in real time. Measurements at two engine speeds (2000 and 3000 rpm) and a full range of loads are presented, although the instrument was designed to operate to speeds of 9000 rpm

    Paleolakes and lacustrine basins on Mars

    The problems of how warm and wet Mars once was and when climate transitions may have occurred are not well understood. Mars may have had an early environment similar to Earth's that was conducive to the emergence of life. In addition, increasing geologic evidence indicates that water, upon which terrestrial life depends, has been present on Mars throughout its history. This evidence does not detract from the possibility that life may have originated on early Mars, but rather suggests that life could have developed over longer periods of time in longer lasting, more clement local environments than previously envisioned. It is suggested herein that such environments may have been provided by paleolakes, located mostly in the northern lowlands and probably ice covered. Such lakes probably would have had diverse origins. Glacial lakes may have occupied ice eroded hollows or formed in valleys obstructed by moraines or ice barriers. Unlike Earth, the Martian record of the origin and evolution of possible life may have not been erased by extensive deformation of the surface. Thus the basins that may have contained the paleolakes are potential sites for future biological, geological, and climatological study

    Decoherence effects on quantum and classical dynamics in reactive scattering are examined using a Caldeira-Leggett type model. Through a study of dynamics of the collinear H+H2 reaction and the transmission over simple one-dimensional barrier potentials, we show that decoherence leads to improved agreement between quantum and classical reaction and transmission probabilities, primarily by increasing the energy dispersion in a well defined way. Increased potential nonlinearity is seen to require larger decoherence in order to attain comparable quantum-classical agreement.Comment: 25 pages, 6 figures, to be published in J. Chem. Phy

    Characterization and properties of controlled nucleation thermochemical deposited (CNTD) silicon carbide

    The microstructure of controlled nucleation thermochemical deposition (CNTD) - SiC material was studied and the room temperature and high temperature bend strength and oxidation resistance was evaluated. Utilizing the CNTD process, ultrafine grained (0.01-0.1 mm) SiC was deposited on W - wires (0.5 mm diameter by 20 cm long) as substrates. The deposited SiC rods had superior surface smoothness and were without any macrocolumnar growth commonly found in conventional CVD material. At both room and high temperature (1200 - 1380 C), the CNTD - SiC exhibited bend strength approximately 200,000 psi (1380 MPa), several times higher than that of hot pressed, sintered, or CVD SiC. The excellent retention of strength at high temperature was attributed to the high purity and fine grain size of the SiC deposit and the apparent absence of grain growth at elevated temperatures. The rates of weight change for CNTD - SiC during oxidation were lower than for NC-203 (hot pressed SiC), higher than for GE's CVD - SiC, and considerably below those for HS-130 (hot pressed Si3N4). The high purity, fully dense, and stable grain size CNTD - SiC material shows potential for high temperature structural applications; however problem areas might include: scaling the process to make larger parts, deposition on removable substrates, and the possible residual tensile stress

    The prime emphasis was on classification of pixels in field centers, away from boundary effects. Results were encouraging in both training and test field centers for wheat and other major types of vegetation present. However, the location of fields was found to be a serious problem and it was even more difficult to select field-center pixels for fields of sizes less than 20 acres (or even larger, depending upon field shape) for use in the field-center analysis. The majority of fields in the segment are less than 20 acres in size. ERTS-1 data were received on 12 September 1973. Ground truth information and aerial photography were received on 9 and 15 September. The data were analyzed and processed digitally using the ERIM multispectral software system

    NERVA Development Status

    During the past few years significant accomplishments have been made in nuclear rocket development. It is the purpose of this paper to review this progress and to highlight the present status of the NERVA engine development. NERVA is part of the ROVER nuclear rocket engine program which was initiated at the Los Alamos Scientific Laboratory in 1955. Figure 1 traces the key accomplishments of this development program from the beginning through the demonstration of feasibility, to the present phase of advancing the technology and extending performance. The initial progress achieved by Los Alamos on the conceptual reactor design and fuel element development was rapid and, by 1959, the KIWI series of reactor tests demonstrated the significant performance and potential of nuclear rocket engines and stimulated interest in the development of a flight-type engine. The NERVA (Nuclear Engine for Rocket Vehicle Applications) Program was initiated in 1961. This effort, under the direction of the Space Nuclear Propul sion Office of J\TASA and the AEC, is being performed by the Aerojet-General Corporation as the prime contractor and the Westinghouse Electric Corporation as the principal subcontractor for the nuclear subsystem development. The KIWI development program demonstrated feasibility and proof-ofprinciple of the nuclear rocket reactor. The NERVA Program is intended to extend these principles to practical application in the development of a system that would withstand the loads , environment, and operating requirements of flight. The KIWI and NERVA reactor programs have been closely coordinated to provide a continuing, logical development, and the chronology of progress clearly highlights the noteworthy advance that has been achieved in our basic technological understanding of the operating potentials and characteristics of the nuclear rocket engine

    Preliminary results on performance testing of a turbocharged rotary combustion engine

    The performance of a turbocharged rotary engine at power levels above 75 kW (100 hp) was studied. A twin rotor turbocharged Mazda engine was tested at speeds of 3000 to 6000 rpm and boost pressures to 7 psi. The NASA developed combustion diagnostic instrumentation was used to quantify indicated and pumping mean effect pressures, peak pressure, and face to face variability on a cycle by cycle basis. Results of this testing showed that a 5900 rpm a 36 percent increase in power was obtained by operating the engine in the turbocharged configuration. When operating with lean carburetor jets at 105 hp (78.3 kW) and 4000 rpm, a brake specific fuel consumption of 0.45 lbm/lb-hr was measured
