The First Larval Stage of Microprosthema semilaeve (von Martens, 1872) (Crustacea: Decapoda: Stenopodidea) Obtained in the Laboratory
The first larval stage of Microprosthema semilaeve (von Martens, 1872) is described from ovigerous females collected off Sombrero Key, Florida Keys, USA, and Guana Island, British Virgin Islands, Caribbean. The larvae are characterized by a broad, triangular telson bearing posterolateral spines and an âanomuran seta,â a first maxilliped that differs markedly from the very similar (to each other) second and third maxillipeds, and the presence of the first pereiopod as a swimming appendage upon hatching, as is apparently true of all stenopodidean first stage larvae. Characters of the larvae are compared to those described from the Indian Ocean by Raje and Ranade (1978) and mistakenly attributed to this same species, and to those of stenopodidean larvae described by Lebour (1941) from Bermuda plankton. Problems in identifying adult specimens of Microprosthema from the Caribbean are discussed
Spontaneous Emission in Chaotic Cavities
The spontaneous emission rate \Gamma of a two-level atom inside a chaotic
cavity fluctuates strongly from one point to another because of fluctuations in
the local density of modes. For a cavity with perfectly conducting walls and an
opening containing N wavechannels, the distribution of \Gamma is given by
P(\Gamma) \propto \Gamma^{N/2-1}(\Gamma+\Gamma_0)^{-N-1}, where \Gamma_0 is the
free-space rate. For small N the most probable value of \Gamma is much smaller

Alloimmunity and nonimmunologic risk factors in cardiac allograft vasculopathy
Graft vasculopathy is an accelerated form of coronary artery disease that occurs in transplanted hearts. Despite major advances in immunosuppression, the prevalence of the disease has remained substantially unchanged during the last two decades. According to the âresponse to injury' paradigm, graft vasculopathy is the result of a continuous inflammatory response to tissue injury initiated by both alloantigen-dependent and independent stress responses. Experimental evidence suggests that these responses may become self-sustaining, as allograft re-transplantation into the donor strain at a later stage fails to prevent disease progression. Histological evidence of endothelitis and arteritis, in association with intima fibrosis and atherosclerosis, reflects the central role of alloimmunity and inflammation in the development of arterial lesions. Experimental results in gene-targeted mouse models indicate that cellular and humoral immune responses are both involved in the pathogenesis of graft vasculopathy. Circulating antibodies against donor endothelium are found in a significant number of patients, but their pathogenic role is still controversial. Alloantigen-independent factors include donor-transmitted coronary artery disease, surgical trauma, ischaemia-reperfusion injury, viral infections, hyperlipidaemia, hypertension, and glucose intolerance. Recent therapeutic advances include the use of novel immunosuppressive agents such as sirolimus (rapamycin), HMG-CoA reductase inhibitors, calcium channel blockers, and angiotensin converting enzyme inhibitors. A Galactic O-Star Catalog
We have produced a catalog of 378 Galactic O stars with accurate spectral
classifications which is complete for V<8 but includes many fainter stars. The
catalog provides cross-identifications with other sources; coordinates
(obtained in most cases from Tycho-2 data); astrometric distances for 24 of the
nearest stars; optical (Tycho-2, Johnson, and Stromgren) and NIR photometry;
group membership, runaway character, and multiplicity information; and a

Phylogeny of Stenopodidea (Crustacea: Decapoda) shrimps inferred from nuclear and mitochondrial genes reveals non-monophyly of the families Spongicolidae and Stenopididae, and most of their composite genera
The infraorder Stenopodidea is a relatively small group of marine decapod crustaceans including the well known cleaner shrimps, but their higher taxonomy has been rather controversial. This study provides the most comprehensive molecular phylogenetic analyses of Stenopodidea using sequence data from two mitochondrial (16S and 12S rRNA) and two nuclear (histone H3 and sodiumâpotassium ATPase α-subunit (NaK)) genes. We included all 12 nominal genera from the three stenopodidean families in order to test the proposed evolutionary hypothesis and taxonomic scheme of the group. The inferred phylogeny did not support the familial ranking of Macromaxillocarididae and rejected the reciprocal monophyly of Spongicolidae and Stenopididae. The genera Stenopus, Richardina, Spongiocaris, Odontozona, Spongicola and Spongicoloides are showed to be poly- or paraphyletic, with monophyly of only the latter three genera strongly rejected in the analysis. The present results only strongly support the monophyly of Microprosthema and suggest that Paraspongiola should be synonymised with Spongicola. The three remaining genera, Engystenopus, Juxtastenopus and Globospongicola, may need to be expanded to include species from other genera if their statuses are maintained. All findings suggest that the morphological characters currently adopted to define genera are mostly invalid and substantial taxonomic revisions are required. As the intergeneric relationships were largely unresolved in the present attempt, the hypothesis of evolution of deep-sea sponge-associated taxa from shallow-water free-living species could not be verified here. The present molecular phylogeny, nevertheless, provides some support that stenopoididean shrimps colonised the deep sea in multiple circumstances
The relativistic impulse approximation for the exclusive electrodisintegration of the deuteron
The electrodisintegration of the deuteron in the frame of the Bethe-Salpeter
approach with a separable kernel of the nucleon-nucleon interaction is
considered. This conception keeps the covariance of a description of the
process. A comparison of relativistic and nonrelativistic calculations is
presented. The factorization of the cross section of the reaction in the
impulse approximation is obtained by analytical calculations. It is shown that

Three-Body Halos in Two Dimensions
A method to study weakly bound three-body quantum systems in two dimensions
is formulated in coordinate space for short-range potentials. Occurrences of
spatially extended structures (halos) are investigated. Borromean systems are
shown to exist in two dimensions for a certain class of potentials. An
extensive numerical investigation shows that a weakly bound two-body state
gives rise to two weakly bound three-body states, a reminiscence of the Efimov
effect in three dimensions. The properties of these two states in the weak
binding limit turn out to be universal.

Emission Spectrum of a Dipole in a Semi-infinite Periodic Dielectric Structure: Effect of the Boundary
The emission spectrum of a dipole embedded in a semi-infinite photonic
crystal is calculated. For simplicity we study the case in which the dielectric
function is sinusoidally modulated only along the direction perpendicular to
the boundary surface plane. In addition to oscillations of the emission rate
with the distance of the dipole from the interface we also observed that the
shape of the emission spectrum srongly depends on the \em initial \em phase
of the dielectric modulation. When the direction of light propagation inside
the periodic structure is not normal to the boundary surface plane we observed
aditional singularities in the emission spectrum, which arise due to different

The Sagnac Phase Shift suggested by the Aharonov-Bohm effect for relativistic matter beams
The phase shift due to the Sagnac Effect, for relativistic matter beams
counter-propagating in a rotating interferometer, is deduced on the bases of a
a formal analogy with the the Aharonov-Bohm effect. A procedure outlined by
Sakurai, in which non relativistic quantum mechanics and newtonian physics
appear together with some intrinsically relativistic elements, is generalized
to a fully relativistic context, using the Cattaneo's splitting technique. This
approach leads to an exact derivation, in a self-consistently relativistic way,
of the Sagnac effect. Sakurai's result is recovered in the first order
