    Neutrino oscillations and the effect of the finite lifetime of the neutrino source

    We consider a neutrino source at rest and discuss a condition for the existence of neutrino oscillations which derives from the finite lifetime Ď„S\tau_S of the neutrino source particle. This condition is present if the neutrino source is a free particle such that its wave function is non-stationary. For a Gaussian wave function and with some simplifying assumptions, we study the modification of the usual oscillation probability stemming from Ď„S\tau_S. In the present accelerator experiments the effect of Ď„S\tau_S can be neglected. We discuss some experimental situations where the source lifetime becomes relevant in the oscillation formula.Comment: 13 pages latex file with 2 figure

    β\beta-Decay Spectrum, Response Function and Statistical Model for Neutrino Mass Measurements with the KATRIN Experiment

    The objective of the Karlsruhe Tritium Neutrino (KATRIN) experiment is to determine the effective electron neutrino mass m(νe)m(\nu_\text{e}) with an unprecedented sensitivity of 0.2 eV0.2\,\text{eV} (90\% C.L.) by precision electron spectroscopy close to the endpoint of the β\beta decay of tritium. We present a consistent theoretical description of the β\beta electron energy spectrum in the endpoint region, an accurate model of the apparatus response function, and the statistical approaches suited to interpret and analyze tritium β\beta decay data observed with KATRIN with the envisaged precision. In addition to providing detailed analytical expressions for all formulae used in the presented model framework with the necessary detail of derivation, we discuss and quantify the impact of theoretical and experimental corrections on the measured m(νe)m(\nu_\text{e}). Finally, we outline the statistical methods for parameter inference and the construction of confidence intervals that are appropriate for a neutrino mass measurement with KATRIN. In this context, we briefly discuss the choice of the β\beta energy analysis interval and the distribution of measuring time within that range.Comment: 27 pages, 22 figures, 2 table

    A combined analysis of short-baseline neutrino experiments in the (3+1) and (3+2) sterile neutrino oscillation hypotheses

    We investigate adding two sterile neutrinos to resolve the apparent tension existing between short-baseline neutrino oscillation results and CPT-conserving, four-neutrino oscillation models. For both (3+1) and (3+2) models, the level of statistical compatibility between the combined dataset from the null short-baseline experiments Bugey, CHOOZ, CCFR84, CDHS, KARMEN, and NOMAD, on the one hand; and the LSND dataset, on the other, is computed. A combined analysis of all seven short-baseline experiments, including LSND, is also performed, to obtain the favored regions in neutrino mass and mixing parameter space for both models. Finally, four statistical tests to compare the (3+1) and the (3+2) hypotheses are discussed. All tests show that (3+2) models fit the existing short-baseline data significantly better than (3+1) models.Comment: 16 pages, 15 figures.     Statistical Analysis of Different Muon-antineutrino->Electron-antineutrino Searches

    A combined statistical analysis of the experimental results of the LSND and KARMEN \numubnueb oscillation search is presented. LSND has evidence for neutrino oscillations that is not confirmed by the KARMEN experiment. This joint analysis is based on the final likelihood results for both data sets. A frequentist approach is applied to deduce confidence regions. At a combined confidence level of 36%, there is no area of oscillation parameters compatible with both experiments. For the complementary confidence of 1-0.36=64%, there are two well defined regions of oscillation parameters (sin^2(2th),Dm^2) compatible with both experiments.Comment: 25 pages, including 10 figures, submitted to Phys.     S_3-flavour symmetry as realized in lepton flavour violating processes

    A variety of lepton flavour violating effects related to the recent discovery of neutrino oscillations and mixings is here systematically discussed in terms of an S_3-flavour permutational symmetry. After a brief review of some relevant results on lepton masses and mixings, that had been derived in the framework of a Minimal S_3-Invariant Extension of the Standard Model, we derive explicit analytical expressions for the matrices of the Yukawa couplings and compute the branching ratios of some selected flavour changing neutral current (FCNC) processes, as well as, the contribution of the exchange of neutral flavour changing scalars to the anomaly of the muon's magnetic moment as functions of the masses of the charged leptons and the neutral Higgs bosons. We find that the S_3 x Z_2 flavour symmetry and the strong mass hierarchy of the charged leptons strongly suppress the FCNC processes in the leptonic sector well below the present experimental upper bounds by many orders of magnitude. The contribution of FCNC to the anomaly of the muon's magnetic moment is small but non-negligible.Comment: 23 pages, one figure. To appear in J. Phys A: Mathematical and Theoretical (SPE QTS5

    Spin Dynamics and Orbital State in LaTiO_3

    A neutron scattering study of the Mott-Hubbard insulator LaTiO3_{3} (TN=132_{{\rm N}}=132 K) reveals a spin wave spectrum that is well described by a nearest-neighbor superexchange constant J=15.5J=15.5 meV and a small Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction (D=1.1D=1.1 meV). The nearly isotropic spin wave spectrum is surprising in view of the absence of a static Jahn-Teller distortion that could quench the orbital angular momentum, and it may indicate strong orbital fluctuations.
