    Rocket spectrometer for investigation of the far ultraviolet solar spectrum

    A rocket-borne Ebert spectrometer and telescope were used for analysis of the solar spectrum. The instrument was arranged in the high resolution line scanning mode. Selected emission lines between 1170 and 1640 A were scanned, and a complete wavelength scan was made from 1170 A to 1850 A. Accurate measurements were made of the line profiles of the He II lines at 1640 A, C IV lines at 1550 A, Si IV lines at 1400 A, C II lines at 1335 A, the N V lines at 1240 A, and the C III lines at 1175 A. Accurate intensity measurements of the quiet sun spectrum for wavelengths between 1174 A and 3220 A were obtained. Spectral resolution was better than 0.03 A over most of the range and spatial resolution was relatively low so that the observations are averaged over the chromospheric network. Plots of absolute intensity versus wave length were prepared for the full wavelength range of the observations

    Catecholaminergic responses to stressful motion stimuli, scopolamine plus amphetamine, and dexamethasone

    Peripheral levels of epinephrine (EPI) and neoepinephrine (NE) generally rise following stressful motion stimuli. Effective anti-motion sickness drugs, scopolamine plus, d-amphetamine (S/D) and dexamthasone (DEX) modulate release of EPI and NE. This modulation may be of etiological relevance. Methods: Severe nausea was induced by exposure to coriolis simulation using a rotating chair. Chronic administration of S/D (0.4 and 5 mg/da) DEX (3 mg/day) and placebo preceded coriolis simulation. EPI and NE were measured immediately before and after simulation. A double-blind crossover design was used. Results: Nausea-induced elevations of EPI (2.5 fold, p less than .01) and NE were not diminished upon repeated exposure and adaptation to the stressor. Subjects with more pronounced elevations of EPI following simulation displayed higher resistance to stressful motion (p less .05). Alteration of peripheral catechlomaine levels following drug suggested that motion sickness was not mediated by peripheral catechlolamine receptor simulation. EPI and NE levels were 2.8 and 3.6-fold higher (p less than .03 and .01) after nausea without DEX treatment. DEX loading halved pre-stress levels of EPI and NE (p less than .05). Conclusions: Marked differences were noted in individual responses to drug and systematic responses of EPI and NE. It is possible that the responses of EPI to motion sickness may predict resistance to stressful motion and represent a peripheral manifestation of some as yet unknown central event of etiologic relevance

    A Model for the Stray Light Contamination of the UVCS Instrument on SOHO

    We present a detailed model of stray-light suppression in the spectrometer channels of the Ultraviolet Coronagraph Spectrometer (UVCS) on the SOHO spacecraft. The control of diffracted and scattered stray light from the bright solar disk is one of the most important tasks of a coronagraph. We compute the fractions of light that diffract past the UVCS external occulter and non-specularly pass into the spectrometer slit. The diffracted component of the stray light depends on the finite aperture of the primary mirror and on its figure. The amount of non-specular scattering depends mainly on the micro-roughness of the mirror. For reasonable choices of these quantities, the modeled stray-light fraction agrees well with measurements of stray light made both in the laboratory and during the UVCS mission.     Amorphous ice: Stepwise formation of very-high-density amorphous ice from low-density amorphous ice at 125 K

    On compressing low-density amorphous ice (LDA) at 125 K up to 1.6 GPa, two distinct density steps accompanied by heat evolution are observable in pressure-density curves. Samples recovered to 77 K and 1 bar after the first and second steps show the x-ray diffraction pattern of high-density amorphous ice (HDA) and very HDA (VHDA), respectively. The compression of the once formed HDA takes place linearly in density up to 0.95 GPa, where nonlinear densification and HDA -> VHDA conversion is initiated. This implies a stepwise formation process LDA -> HDA -> VHDA at 125 K, which is to the best of our knowledge the first observation of a stepwise amorphous-amorphous-amorphous transformation sequence. We infer that the relation of HDA and VHDA is very similar to the relation between LDA and HDA except for a higher activation barrier between the former.     Scissors modes in triaxial metal clusters

    We study the scissors mode (orbital M1 excitations) in small Na clusters, triaxial metal clusters Na12{\rm Na}_{12} and Na16{\rm Na}_{16} and the close-to-spherical Na9+{{\rm Na}_9}^+, all described in DFT with detailed ionic background. The scissors modes built on spin-saturated ground and spin-polarized isomeric states are analyzed in virtue of both macroscopic collective and microscopic shell-model treatments. It is shown that the mutual destruction of Coulomb and the exchange-correlation parts of the residual interaction makes the collective shift small and the net effect can depend on details of the actual excited state. The crosstalk with dipole and spin-dipole modes is studied in detail. In particular, a strong crosstalk with spin-dipole negative-parity mode is found in the case of spin-polarized states. Triaxiality and ionic structure considerably complicate the scissors response, mainly at expense of stronger fragmentation of the strength. Nevertheless, even in these complicated cases the scissors mode is mainly determined by the global deformation. The detailed ionic structure destroys the spherical symmetry and can cause finite M1 response (transverse optical mode) even in clusters with zero global deformation. But its strength turns out to be much smaller than for the genuine scissors modes in deformed systems.Comment: 17 pages, 5 figure

    We report new measurements of the neutron charge form factor at low momentum transfer using quasielastic electrodisintegration of the deuteron. Longitudinally polarized electrons at an energy of 850 MeV were scattered from an isotopically pure, highly polarized deuterium gas target. The scattered electrons and coincident neutrons were measured by the Bates Large Acceptance Spectrometer Toroid (BLAST) detector. The neutron form factor ratio GEn/GMnG^{n}_{E}/G^{n}_{M} was extracted from the beam-target vector asymmetry AedVA_{ed}^{V} at four-momentum transfers Q2=0.14Q^{2}=0.14, 0.20, 0.29 and 0.42 (GeV/c)2^{2}.Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures, submitted to Phys.     Examining associations Between School-Level Determinants and the Implementation of Physical activity Opportunities

    School-based physical activity (PA) opportunities can help students engage in greater amounts of daily PA, meet PA guidelines, and lead to improved health and educational outcomes. However, we do not completely understand the organizational challenges to implementing these opportunities successfully. This exploratory study examined associations between school-level determinants and the implementation of school-based PA opportunities. We analyzed cross-sectional survey data from schools (n = 46) participating in the Healthy Zone School Program (HZSP) (Dallas, Texas, USA) during 2019-2020. Respondents completed an electronic survey that included measures of school-level determinants (e.g. culture, leadership, priority) and the implementation of school-based PA opportunities. We used linear regression models to examine associations between determinants and implementation outcomes (number of PA opportunities delivered, perceived overall success of each PA program/activity used). After adjusting for campus type (i.e. elementary, middle, high, K-12), student race/ethnicity, and percentage of economically disadvantaged students, no constructs were associated with the number of PA opportunities implemented. Linear regression models suggest access to knowledge and information (β = 0.39, P = .012, 95% CI = 0.24-1.44) and implementation climate (β = 0.34, P = .045, 95% CI = 0.02-1.59) were positively associated with the success of school-based PA opportunities. Our findings provide suggestive evidence that access to knowledge and information and a supportive school climate may improve the overall success of PA opportunities provided to students. Future research should examine additional school-level determinants to understand their importance to implementation and inform the development of strategies to improve schools\u27 capacity for implementing PA opportunities successfully
