Software Engineering Laboratory Ada performance study: Results and implications
The SEL is an organization sponsored by NASA/GSFC to investigate the effectiveness of software engineering technologies applied to the development of applications software. The SEL was created in 1977 and has three organizational members: NASA/GSFC, Systems Development Branch; The University of Maryland, Computer Sciences Department; and Computer Sciences Corporation, Systems Development Operation. The goals of the SEL are as follows: (1) to understand the software development process in the GSFC environments; (2) to measure the effect of various methodologies, tools, and models on this process; and (3) to identify and then to apply successful development practices. The activities, findings, and recommendations of the SEL are recorded in the Software Engineering Laboratory Series, a continuing series of reports that include the Ada Performance Study Report. This paper describes the background of Ada in the Flight Dynamics Division (FDD), the objectives and scope of the Ada Performance Study, the measurement approach used, the performance tests performed, the major test results, and the implications for future FDD Ada development efforts
Horizon energy and angular momentum from a Hamiltonian perspective
Classical black holes and event horizons are highly non-local objects,
defined in terms of the causal past of future null infinity. Alternative,
(quasi)local definitions are often used in mathematical, quantum, and numerical
relativity. These include apparent, trapping, isolated, and dynamical horizons,
all of which are closely associated to two-surfaces of zero outward null
expansion. In this paper we show that three-surfaces which can be foliated with
such two-surfaces are suitable boundaries in both a quasilocal action and a
phase space formulation of general relativity. The resulting formalism provides
expressions for the quasilocal energy and angular momentum associated with the
horizon. The values of the energy and angular momentum are in agreement with

A quasilocal calculation of tidal heating
We present a method for computing the flux of energy through a closed surface
containing a gravitating system. This method, which is based on the quasilocal
formalism of Brown and York, is illustrated by two applications: a calculation
of (i) the energy flux, via gravitational waves, through a surface near
infinity and (ii) the tidal heating in the local asymptotic frame of a body
interacting with an external tidal field. The second application represents the
first use of the quasilocal formalism to study a non-stationary spacetime and
shows how such methods can be used to study tidal effects in isolated

The kinetics of fluoride uptake by synthetic hydroxyapatite
The kinetics of fluoride uptake by synthetic hydroxyapatite from aqueous solution has been studied. Experiments involved
exposing 0.1 g of synthetic hydroxyapatite to 5 cm3 of sodium fluoride solution in the concentration range 100-1000 ppm fluoride and determining fluoride concentration at regular time intervals with a fluoride ion-selective electrode. In all cases, uptake was found to follow pseudo-second order kinetics with correlation coefficients of at least 0.998; all systems equilibrated by 24 hours with equilibrium uptake values that varied with the initial fluoride concentration. The kinetic results
differ from those previously reported for much lower concentrations of fluoride, but in the present case, the concentrations were of clinical relevance, as they are those used in fluoride-containing dental products. Further work is necessary to determine how well these findings model uptake by natural hydroxyapatite and hence the extent to which they might apply in vivo
Quantifying structural damage from self-irradiation in a plutonium superconductor
The 18.5 K superconductor PuCoGa5 has many unusual properties, including
those due to damage induced by self-irradiation. The superconducting transition
temperature decreases sharply with time, suggesting a radiation-induced Frenkel
defect concentration much larger than predicted by current radiation damage
theories. Extended x-ray absorption fine-structure measurements demonstrate
that while the local crystal structure in fresh material is well ordered, aged
material is disordered much more strongly than expected from simple defects,
consistent with strong disorder throughout the damage cascade region. These
data highlight the potential impact of local lattice distortions relative to
defects on the properties of irradiated materials and underscore the need for
more atomic-resolution structural comparisons between radiation damage

Interaction of fluoride complexes derived from glass-ionomer cements with hydroxyapatite
A study has been undertaken of the interaction of complexed fluoride extracted from glass-ionomer dental cements with
synthetic hydroxyapatite powder. Extracts were prepared from two commercial glass-ionomers (Fuji IX and ChemFlex)
under both neutral and acidic conditions. They were analysed by ICP-OES and by fluoride-ion selective electrode with and without added TISAB to decomplex the fluoride. The pH of the acid extracts was 4, conditions under which fluoridecomplexes with protons as HF or HF2, it also complexes with aluminium, which was found to be present in higher amounts in the acid extracts. Fluoride was found to be almost completely complexed in acid extracts, but not in neutral extracts, which contained free fluoride ions. Exposure of these extracts to synthetic hydroxyapatite powder showed that fluoride was taken up rapidly (within 5 minutes), whether or not it was complexed. SEM (EDAX) study of recovered hydroxyapatite showed only minute traces of aluminium taken up under all conditions. This showed that aluminium interacts hardly at all with hydroxyapatite, and hence is probably not involved in the remineralisation process
Quenched Chiral Perturbation Theory for Vector Mesons
We develop quenched chiral perturbation theory for vector mesons made of
light quarks, in the limit where the vector meson masses are much larger than
the pion mass. We use this theory to extract the leading nonanalytic dependence
of the vector meson masses on the masses of the light quarks. By comparing with
analogous quantities computed in ordinary chiral perturbation theory, we
estimate the size of quenching effects, observing that in general they can be
quite large. This estimate is relevant to lattice simulations, where the
