Time-of-flight spectroscopy of ultracold neutrons at the PSI UCN source

The ultracold neutron (UCN) source at the Paul Scherrer Institute (PSI) provides high intensities of storable neutrons for fundamental physics experiments. The neutron velocity spectrum parallel to the beamline axis was determined by time-of-flight spectroscopy using a neutron chopper. In particular, the temporal evolution of the spectrum during neutron production and UCN storage in the source storage volume was investigated and compared to Monte Carlo simulation results. A softening of the measured spectrum from a mean velocity of 7.7(1) m s−1^{-1} to 5.1(1) m s−1^{-1} occurred within the first 30 s after the proton beam pulse had impinged on the spallation target. A spectral hardening was observed over longer time scales of one measurement day, consistent with the effect of surface degradation of the solid deuterium moderator

Characterization of ultracold neutron production in thin solid deuterium films at the PSI UCN source

We determined the ultracold neutron (UCN) production rate by superthermal conversion in the solid deuterium (sD2_2) moderator of the UCN source at the Paul Scherrer Institute (PSI). In particular, we considered low amounts of less than 20 20\,mol of D2_2, deposited on the cooled moderator vessel surfaces in thin films of a few mm thickness. We measured the isotopic (cHD<0.2 % c_\text{HD} < 0.2 \, \% ) and isomeric (cpara≤2.7 % c_\text{para} \le 2.7 \, \% ) purity of the deuterium to conclude that absorption and up-scattering at 5 5\,K have a negligible effect on the UCN yield from the thin films. We compared the calculated UCN yield based on the previously measured thermal neutron flux from the heavy water thermal moderator with measurements of the UCN count rates at the beamports. We confirmed our results and thus demonstrate an absolute characterization of the UCN production and transport in the source by simulations

Barriers to home care for terminally ill Turkish and Moroccan migrants, perceived by GPs and nurses: a survey

BACKGROUND: Previous qualitative research proved that relatives of elderly terminally ill Turkish and Moroccan immigrants experience several barriers to the use of Dutch professional home care. The aim of this study was to explore how general practitioners and home care nurses perceive the home care for terminally ill Turkish and Moroccan migrants and their families in the Netherlands. METHODS: Questionnaires were sent to home care organizations and GPs working in areas where most of these migrants are living. 93 nurses and 78 GPs provided information about their experiences and opinions regarding home care for this group of patients. The data were analyzed by descriptive statistics. RESULTS: GPs refer relatively few patients from these migrant groups to home care. They often find it difficult to assess the needs of these patients and their families. In 40% of the GPs' cases in which terminally ill Turkish and Moroccan migrants were not referred to home care, the GP regretted this afterwards: the patients had not received sufficient qualified care, and their informal carers had often become overburdened. In addition, home care nurses often express dissatisfaction with the home care given to terminally ill Turkish or Moroccan patients, because of communication problems, the patients' lack of knowledge of the disease, or difficulties in making suitable appointments with the patient or with the family. CONCLUSIONS: Nurses and GPs cite chiefly similar factors influencing access to and use of home care as family members did in a previous study. However, according to GPs and nurses, the main barrier to the use of home care concerns communication problems, while relatives cited the preference for family care as the main reason for abstaining from the use of home care.

AbstractObjectiveDepressive symptoms are associated with mortality among patients on chronic dialysis therapy. It is currently unknown how different courses of depressive symptoms are associated with both cardiovascular and non-cardiovascular mortality.MethodsIn a Dutch prospective nation-wide cohort study among incident patients on chronic dialysis, 1077 patients completed the Mental Health Inventory, both at 3 and 12months after starting dialysis. Cox regression models were used to calculate crude and adjusted hazard ratios (HRs) for mortality for patients with depressive symptoms at 3months only (baseline only), at 12months only (new-onset), and both at 3 and 12months (persistent), using patients without depressive symptoms at 3 and 12months as reference group.ResultsDepressive symptoms at baseline only seemed to be a strong marker for non-cardiovascular mortality (HRadj 1.91, 95% CI 1.26–2.90), whereas cardiovascular mortality was only moderately increased (HRadj 1.41, 95% CI 0.85–2.33). In contrast, new-onset depressive symptoms were moderately associated with both cardiovascular (HRadj 1.66, 95% CI 1.06–2.58) and non-cardiovascular mortality (HRadj 1.46, 95% CI 0.97–2.20). Among patients with persistent depressive symptoms, a poor survival was observed due to both cardiovascular (HRadj 2.14, 95% CI 1.42–3.24) and non-cardiovascular related mortality (HRadj 1.76, 95% CI 1.20–2.59).ConclusionThis study showed that different courses of depressive symptoms were associated with a poor survival after the start of dialysis. In particular, temporary depressive symptoms at the start of dialysis may be a strong marker for non-cardiovascular mortality, whereas persistent depressive symptoms were associated with both cardiovascular and non-cardiovascular mortality

We present the magnetically shielded room (MSR) for the n2EDM experiment at the Paul Scherrer Institute, which features an interior cubic volume with each side of length 2.92 m, thus providing an accessible space of 25 m3. The MSR has 87 openings of diameter up to 220 mm for operating the experimental apparatus inside and an intermediate space between the layers for housing sensitive signal processing electronics. The characterization measurements show a remanent magnetic field in the central 1 m3 below 100 pT and a field below 600 pT in the entire inner volume, up to 4 cm to the walls. The quasi-static shielding factor at 0.01 Hz measured with a sinusoidal 2 μT peak-to-peak signal is about 100 000 in all three spatial directions and increases rapidly with frequency to reach 108 above 1 Hz
