On-demand microwave generator of shaped single photons
We demonstrate the full functionality of a circuit that generates single
microwave photons on demand, with a wave packet that can be modulated with a
near-arbitrary shape. We achieve such a high tunability by coupling a
superconducting qubit near the end of a semi-infinite transmission line. A dc
superconducting quantum interference device shunts the line to ground and is
employed to modify the spatial dependence of the electromagnetic mode structure
in the transmission line. This control allows us to couple and decouple the
qubit from the line, shaping its emission rate on fast time scales. Our
decoupling scheme is applicable to all types of superconducting qubits and
other solid-state systems and can be generalized to multiple qubits as well as
to resonators.Comment: 10 pages, 7 figures. Published versio
Catching and rearing postlarval cleaner shrimp for the aquarium trade: results from a WorldFish Center project in Solomon Islands
Between 1999 and 2003, the WorldFish Center in Solomon Islands conducted research into the feasibility of a new fishery based on the capture and culture of postlarval coral reef fish for the live fish trade. The work was carried out in two phases: a research phase from late 1999 to the end of 2002; and a “finetuning” phase in 2003. Most of the species were of value to the marine aquarium trade, with very few live reef food fish recorded. The most valuable ornamentals were the banded cleaner shrimp, Stenopus species. Cleaner shrimp were harvested using crest nets, the method being modified with the addition of a solid, water-retaining cod-end designed to increase survival at capture. Grow-out techniques were improved by rearing the shrimp separately in jars to prevent aggression. The jars were painted black to protect the shrimp from sunlight. An economic model using experimental catch data and farm gate prices indicates that the fishery based on shrimp, supplemented with small numbers of lobster and fish is economically viable. The next step will be setting up a demonstration farm in a village in the Western Province of Solomon Islands.Aquarium culture, Juveniles, Catch culture, Shrimp fisheries, Catch/effort, Solomon I., Stenopus
Seed Yield Prediction Models of Four Common Moist-Soil Plant Species in Texas
Seed production by moist-soil plant species often varies within and among managed wetlands and on larger landscapes. Quantifying seed production of moist-soil plants can be used to evaluate wetland management strategies and estimate wetland energetic carrying capacity, specifically for waterfowl. In the past, direct estimation techniques were used, but due to excessive personnel and time costs, other indirect methods have been developed. Because indirect seed yield models do not exist for moist-soil plant species in east-central or coastal Texas, we developed direct and indirect methods to model seed production on regional managed wetlands. In September 2004 and 2005, we collected Echinochloa crusgalli (barnyard grass), E. walterii (wild millet), E. colona (jungle rice), and Oryza sativa (cultivated rice) for phytomorphological measurements and seed yield modeling. Initial simple linear and point of origin regression analyses demonstrate strong relationships (P \u3c 0.001) among phytomorphological and dot grid methods in predicting seed production for all four species. These models should help regional wetland managers evaluate moist-soil management success and create models for seed production for other moist-soil plants in this region
Precision measurement of the 5 2S1/2 - 4 2D5/2 quadrupole transition isotope shift between 88Sr+ and 86Sr+
We have measured the isotope shift of the narrow quadrupole-allowed 5 2S1/2 -
4 2D5/2 transition in 86Sr+ relative to the most abundant isotope 88Sr+. This
was accomplished using high-resolution laser spectroscopy of individual trapped
ions, and the measured shift is Delta-nu_meas^(88,86) = 570.281(4) MHz. We have
also tested a recently developed and successful method for ab-initio
calculation of isotope shifts in alkali-like atomic systems against this
measurement, and our initial result of Delta-nu_calc^(88,86) = 457(28) MHz is
also presented. To our knowledge, this is the first high precision measurement
and calculation of that isotope shift. While the measurement and the
calculation are in broad agreement, there is a clear discrepancy between them,
and we believe that the specific mass shift was underestimated in our
calculation. Our measurement provides a stringent test for further refinements
of theoretical isotope shift calculation methods for atomic systems with a
single valence electron
DESIGNING GRADUATE EDUCATION FOR AGRIBUSINESS STUDENTS
For several years, universities in the U.S. have been struggling with defining and refining undergraduate and graduate agribusiness education programs. With the release of the recommendations of the National Agribusiness Education Commission, the search for the key ingredients of a Masters-level program has intensified. Mississippi State University has been among those universities attempting to define the parameters of a "cutting edge" agribusiness program. Faculty interest within the College of Business and Industry and the Agricultural Economics Department to develop a joint program has precipitated intensive efforts to achieve this goal. A nationally recognized agribusiness group of six academic leaders served as a Cooperative State Research Service team to assess the University's potential, using the concept of an agribusiness institute as an integrating and management vehicle. Efforts in this direction have been aided by a USDA planning grant now moving into its second year. A survey of Mid-South agribusiness leaders indicates the interest of the industry in development of the program. The final step is to address the logistical details required to convert the current Master of Agribusiness Management in the Department of Agricultural Economics to a jointly administered program of study.Teaching/Communication/Extension/Profession,
Stamp Out Chickweed and Henbit from Alfalfa
What are chickweed and henbit?
Chickweed and henbit are winter annual weeds that grow during cool weather. The seeds germinate primarily in the fall, and the plants continue to grow and live through the winter. They develop new seeds from April until early summer. Then they die
Complete and safe resection of challenging retroperitoneal tumors: anticipation of multi-organ and major vascular resection and use of adjunct procedures.
BackgroundRetroperitoneal tumors are often massive and can involve adjacent organs and/or vital structures, making them difficult to resect. Completeness of resection is within the surgeon's control and critical for long-term survival, particularly for malignant disease. Few studies directly address strategies for complete and safe resection of challenging retroperitoneal tumors.MethodsFifty-six patients representing 63 cases of primary or recurrent retroperitoneal tumor resection between 2004-2009 were identified and a retrospective chart review was performed. Rates of complete resection, use of adjunct procedures, and perioperative complications were recorded.ResultsIn 95% of cases, complete resection was achieved. Fifty-eight percent of these cases required en bloc multi-organ resection, and 8% required major vascular resection. Complete resection rates were higher for primary versus recurrent disease. Adjunct procedures (ureteral stents, femoral nerve monitoring, posterior laminotomy, etc.) were used in 54% of cases. Major postoperative complications occurred in 16% of cases, and one patient died (2% mortality).ConclusionsComplete resection of challenging retroperitoneal tumors is feasible and can be done safely with important pre- and intraoperative considerations in mind
Distribution of the second virial coefficients of globular proteins
George and Wilson [Acta. Cryst. D 50, 361 (1994)] looked at the distribution
of values of the second virial coefficient of globular proteins, under the
conditions at which they crystallise. They found the values to lie within a
fairly narrow range. We have defined a simple model of a generic globular
protein. We then generate a set of proteins by picking values for the
parameters of the model from a probability distribution. At fixed solubility,
this set of proteins is found to have values of the second virial coefficient
that fall within a fairly narrow range. The shape of the probability
distribution of the second virial coefficient is Gaussian because the second
virial coefficient is a sum of contributions from different patches on the
protein surface.Comment: 5 pages, including 3 figure
