Closed loop spray cooling apparatus
A closed loop apparatus for spraying coolant against the back of a radiation target is described. The coolant was circulated through a closed loop with a bubble of inert gas being maintained around the spray. Mesh material was disposed between the bubble and the surface of the liquid coolant which was below the bubble at a predetermined level. In a second embodiment, no inert gas was used, the bubble consisting of a vapor produced when the coolant was sprayed against the target
Formation of plasma around a small meteoroid: 1. Kinetic theory
This article is a companion to Dimant and Oppenheim [2017] https://doi.org/10.1002/2017JA023963.This paper calculates the spatial distribution of the plasma responsible for radar head echoes by applying the kinetic theory developed in the companion paper. This results in a set of analytic expressions for the plasma density as a function of distance from the meteoroid. It shows that at distances less than a collisional mean free path from the meteoroid surface, the plasma density drops in proportion to 1/R where R is the distance from the meteoroid center; and, at distances much longer than the meanâfreeâpath behind the meteoroid, the density diminishes at a rate proportional to 1/R2. The results of this paper should be used for modeling and analysis of radar head echoes. This work was supported by NSF grant AGS-1244842. (AGS-1244842 - NSF

End states, ladder compounds, and domain wall fermions
A magnetic field applied to a cross linked ladder compound can generate
isolated electronic states bound to the ends of the chain. After exploring the
interference phenomena responsible, I discuss a connection to the domain wall
approach to chiral fermions in lattice gauge theory. The robust nature of the
states under small variations of the bond strengths is tied to chiral symmetry
and the multiplicative renormalization of fermion masses.Comment: 10 pages, 4 figures; final version for Phys. Rev. Let
Low secondary electron yield engineered surface for electron cloud mitigation
Secondary electron yield (SEY or Ύ) limits the performance of a number of devices. Particularly, in high-energy charged particle accelerators, the beam-induced electron multipacting is one of the main sources of electron cloud (e-cloud) build up on the beam path; in radio frequency wave guides, the electron multipacting limits their lifetime and causes power loss; and in detectors, the secondary electrons define the signal background and reduce the sensitivity. The best solution would be a material with a low SEY coating and for many applications Ύ < 1 would be sufficient. We report on an alternative surface preparation to the ones that are currently advocated. Three commonly used materials in accelerator vacuum chambers (stainless steel, copper, and aluminium) were laser processed to create a highly regular surface topography. It is shown that this treatment reduces the SEY of the copper, aluminium, and stainless steel from Ύmax of 1.90, 2.55, and 2.25 to 1.12, 1.45, and 1.12, respectively. The Ύmax further reduced to 0.76-0.78 for all three treated metals after bombardment with 500 eV electrons to a dose between 3.5 à 10-3 and 2.0 à 10-2 C·mm-2

Entanglement in nuclear quadrupole resonance
Entangled quantum states are an important element of quantum information
techniques. We determine the requirements for states of quadrupolar nuclei with
spins >1/2 to be entangled. It was shown that entanglement is achieved at low
temperature by applying a magnetic field to a quadrupolar nuclei possess
quadrupole moments, which interacts with the electricfield gradient produced by
the charge distribution in their surroundings.Comment: 9 pages, 5 figure
Spin polarization of exciton-polariton condensate in a photonic synthetic effective magnetic field
We investigate the spin polarization of localized exciton-polariton
condensates. We demonstrate the presence of an effective magnetic field leading
to the formation of elliptically polarized condensates. We show that this
synthetic field has an entirely photonic origin, which we believe is unique for
the CdTe-based microcavities. Moreover, the degree of spin polarization of
localized polariton condensates in samples with magnetic ions depends on the
excitation power or polarization of the non-resonant excitation laser. In an
external magnetic field, the semimagnetic condensate spontaneously builds up
strong spin polarization. Based on the magnetic field behavior of the
condensate in the presence of magnetic ions, we apply a model that allows us to
estimate the polariton-polariton interaction strength in a CdTe-system to
approx. 0.8
The Effects of Negative Legacies on the Adjustment of Parentally Bereaved Children and Adolescents
This is a report of a qualitative analysis of a sample of bereaved families in which one parent died and in which children scored in the clinical range on the Child Behavior Check List. The purpose of this analysis was to learn more about the lives of these children. They were considered to be at risk of developing emotional and behavioral problems associated with the death. We discovered that many of these âhigh riskâ children had a continuing bond with the deceased that was primarily negative and troubling for them in contrast to a comparison group of children not at risk from the same study. Five types of legacies, not mutually exclusive, were identified: health related, role related, personal qualities, legacy of blame, and an emotional legacy. Coping behavior on the part of the surviving parent seemed to make a difference in whether or not a legacy was experienced as negative
The multiple quantum NMR dynamics in systems of equivalent spins with the dipolar ordered initial state
The multiple quantum (MQ) NMR dynamics in the system of equivalent spins with
the dipolar ordered initial state is considered. The high symmetry of the MQ
Hamiltonian is used in order to develop the analytical and numerical methods
for an investigation of the MQ NMR dynamics in the systems consisting of
hundreds of spins from "the first principles". We obtain the dependence of the
intensities of the MQ NMR coherences on their orders (profiles of the MQ NMR
coherences) for the systems of spins. It is shown that these
profiles may be well approximated by the exponential distribution functions. We
also compare the MQ NMR dynamics in the systems of equivalent spins having two
different initial states, namely the dipolar ordered state and the thermal
equilibrium state in the strong external magnetic field.Comment: 11 pages 4 figure
