Right eigenvalue equation in quaternionic quantum mechanics

We study the right eigenvalue equation for quaternionic and complex linear matrix operators defined in n-dimensional quaternionic vector spaces. For quaternionic linear operators the eigenvalue spectrum consists of n complex values. For these operators we give a necessary and sufficient condition for the diagonalization of their quaternionic matrix representations. Our discussion is also extended to complex linear operators, whose spectrum is characterized by 2n complex eigenvalues. We show that a consistent analysis of the eigenvalue problem for complex linear operators requires the choice of a complex geometry in defining inner products. Finally, we introduce some examples of the left eigenvalue equations and highlight the main difficulties in their solution.Comment: 24 pages, AMS-Te

    Quaternionic Electroweak Theory

We explicitly develop a quaternionic version of the electroweak theory, based on the local gauge group U(1,q)LU(1,c)YU(1, q)_{L}\mid U(1, c)_{Y}. The need of a complex projection for our Lagrangian and the physical significance of the anomalous scalar solutions are also discussed.Comment: 12 pages, Revtex, submitted to J. Phys.

A Variational Fock-Space Treatment of Quarkonium

    Get PDF
The variational method and the Hamiltonian formalism of QCD are used to derive relativistic, momentum space integral equations for a quark-antiquark system with an arbitrary number of gluons present. As a first step, the resulting infinite chain of coupled equations is solved in the nonrelativistic limit by an approximate decoupling method. Comparison with experiment allows us to fix the quark mass and coupling constant, allowing for the calculation of the spectra of massive systems such as charmonium and bottomonium. Studying the results with and without the nonAbelian terms, we find that the presence of the nonAbelian factors yields better agreement with the experimental spectra.Comment: TEX, no figure

Quaternionic Electroweak Theory and CKM Matrix

    Get PDF
We find in our quaternionic version of the electroweak theory an apparently hopeless problem: In going from complex to quaternions, the calculation of the real-valued parameters of the CKM matrix drastically changes. We aim to explain this quaternionic puzzle.Comment: 8, Revtex, Int. J. Theor. Phys. (to be published

Galactic Archaeology with TESS: Prospects for Testing the Star Formation History in the Solar Neighbourhood

    Get PDF
A period of quenching between the formation of the thick and thin disks of the Milky Way has been recently proposed to explain the observed age-[{\alpha}/Fe] distribution of stars in the solar neighbourhood. However, robust constraints on stellar ages are currently available for only a limited number of stars. The all-sky survey TESS (Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite) will observe the brightest stars in the sky and thus can be used to investigate the age distributions of stars in these components of the Galaxy via asteroseismology, where previously this has been difficult using other techniques. The aim of this preliminary study was to determine whether TESS will be able to provide evidence for quenching periods during the star formation history of the Milky Way. Using a population synthesis code, we produced populations based on various stellar formation history models and limited the analysis to red-giant-branch stars. We investigated the mass-Galactic-disk-height distributions, where stellar mass was used as an age proxy, to test for whether periods of quenching can be observed by TESS. We found that even with the addition of 15% noise to the inferred masses, it will be possible for TESS to find evidence for/against quenching periods suggested in the literature (e.g. between 7 and 9 Gyr ago), therefore providing stringent constraints on the formation and evolution of the Milky Way.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures, proceedings of "Seismology of the Sun and the Distant Stars 2016", Mario J. Structure of Turbulence in Katabatic Flows below and above the Wind-Speed Maximum

Measurements of small-scale turbulence made over the complex-terrain atmospheric boundary layer during the MATERHORN Program are used to describe the structure of turbulence in katabatic flows. Turbulent and mean meteorological data were continuously measured at multiple levels at four towers deployed along the East lower slope (2-4 deg) of Granite Mountain. The multi-level observations made during a 30-day long MATERHORN-Fall field campaign in September-October 2012 allowed studying of temporal and spatial structure of katabatic flows in detail, and herein we report turbulence and their variations in katabatic winds. Observed vertical profiles show steep gradients near the surface, but in the layer above the slope jet the vertical variability is smaller. It is found that the vertical (normal to the slope) momentum flux and horizontal (along the slope) heat flux in a slope-following coordinate system change their sign below and above the wind maximum of a katabatic flow. The vertical momentum flux is directed downward (upward) whereas the horizontal heat flux is downslope (upslope) below (above) the wind maximum. Our study therefore suggests that the position of the jet-speed maximum can be obtained by linear interpolation between positive and negative values of the momentum flux (or the horizontal heat flux) to derive the height where flux becomes zero. It is shown that the standard deviations of all wind speed components (therefore the turbulent kinetic energy) and the dissipation rate of turbulent kinetic energy have a local minimum, whereas the standard deviation of air temperature has an absolute maximum at the height of wind-speed maximum. We report several cases where the vertical and horizontal heat fluxes are compensated. Turbulence above the wind-speed maximum is decoupled from the surface, and follows the classical local z-less predictions for stably stratified boundary layer.Comment: Manuscript submitted to Boundary-Layer Meteorology (05 December 2014

    The Josephson light-emitting diode

We consider an optical quantum dot where an electron level and a hole level are coupled to respective superconducting leads. We find that electrons and holes recombine producing photons at discrete energies as well as a continuous tail. Further, the spectral lines directly probe the induced superconducting correlations on the dot. At energies close to the applied bias voltage eV, a parameter range exists, where radiation proceeds in pairwise emission of polarization correlated photons. At energies close to 2eV, emitted photons are associated with Cooper pair transfer and are reminiscent of Josephson radiation. We discuss how to probe the coherence of these photons in a SQUID geometry via single photon interference.Comment: Main text: 4 pages, 4 figures, Supplementary material: 8 pages, 4 figure

Indonesian has now become more popular Internationally, for example, Vietnam used Indonesian Bahasa as their second language. There are several ways to helping people to learn Indonesian Bahasa, one of them is by creating a tool that allows them to determine whether the language the are currently learning is true or not. This thesis discusses the application of Indonesian editor with spell checker and diction recommendation features in IndonesianThe process is carried out as follows: users opens a file or typing in the editor, words input will be checked with Apache Lucene, and Lucene will crawling to all of the data and give the recommendation base on the weight (Leveinsthein Algorithm) and if a user opens a file, the application will perform spell checking using Nazief and Adriani algorithm. The result of this process is the result of input that is underlined words that is not in accordance with Indonesian, or suitable recommendation result by Apache Lucene. Input could be words or .doc file. As Output will be written in .doc file and the spell checking results and words recommendation will be shown in editor as the user types. This application is built using Java programming language and Android Studio as the IDE.The test result shows that the accuracy of the Nazief and Adriani Algorthms still need to be improved, word length and word complexity also affects the time in the checking process, for example: to check documents with 100 words, there are various of time from 1.48 minutes to 3.3 minutes. Besides that, this algorithm can not check the word which had 2 syllables, like “pertanggungjawaban” because of the stemming process
