Passive RC network was designed with zeros of transmission in the right half of the complex frequency plane in the feedback loop of a simple negative-gain amplifier. The proper positioning provides any desired trade-off between amplifier gain and sensitivity to amplifier gain
Effects of systematic errors on the mixing ratios of trace gases obtained from occulation spectra
The influence of systematic errors in the parameters of the models describing the geometry and the atmosphere on the profiles of trace gases retrieved from simulated solar occultation spectra, collected at satellite altitudes, is investigated. Because of smearing effects and other uncertainties, it may be preferable to calibrate the spectra internally by measuring absorption lines of an atmospheric gas such as CO2 whose vertical distribution is assumed rather than to relay on externally supplied information
Tunable bandpass filter with variable selectivity
Basic active RC networks constructed from stages that realize second-order transfer functions using two integrators offer excellent stability. Modifications of the basic network produce a highly stable bandpass filter having separate controls that independently adjust center frequency, Q, and center frequency gain
High pressure compressor component performance report
A compressor optimization study defined a 10 stage configuration with a 22.6:1 pressure ratio, an adiabatic efficiency goal of 86.1%, and a polytropic efficiency of 90.6%; the corrected airflow is 53.5 kg/s. Subsequent component testing included three full scale tests: a six stage rig test, a 10 stage rig test, and another 10 stage rig test completed in the second quarter of 1982. Information from these tests is used to select the configuration for a core engine test and an integrated core/low spool test. The test results will also provide data base for the flight propulsion system. The results of the test series with both aerodynamic and mechanical performance of each compressor build are presented. The second 10 stage compressor adiabatic efficiency was 0.848 at a cruise operating point versus a test goal of 0.846
Low Frequency Tilt Seismology with a Precision Ground Rotation Sensor
We describe measurements of the rotational component of teleseismic surface
waves using an inertial high-precision ground-rotation-sensor installed at the
LIGO Hanford Observatory (LHO). The sensor has a noise floor of 0.4 nrad at 50 mHz and a translational coupling of less than 1 rad/m
enabling translation-free measurement of small rotations. We present
observations of the rotational motion from Rayleigh waves of six teleseismic
events from varied locations and with magnitudes ranging from M6.7 to M7.9.
These events were used to estimate phase dispersion curves which shows
agreement with a similar analysis done with an array of three STS-2
seismometers also located at LHO
The Importance of Pulsed Physical Events for Sustainability of Louisiana Coastal Forested Wetlands
A number of freshwater diversions from the Mississippi River into Louisiana’s coastal wetlands are currently in operation or in the planning stage. These diversions have multiple objectives including maintaining a desirable salinity gradient, restoring deteriorating wetlands, and enhancing fisheries. The extensive freshwater forested wetlands surrounding the western end of Lake Pontchartrain receive little or no sediment input and are currently deteriorating due to continuous flooding. Diverting nutrient-rich water through wetlands can lead to substantial nutrient removal and to enhanced accretion. The objective of this paper is to compare the impacts on freshwater wetland ecology, accretion, and water quality of several scenarios for diverting freshwater from the Mississippi River. Accretion will be increased so that the area will become progressively less flooded, enhancing productivity and seedling recruitment. With overland flow, about 73% of N and 48% of P will be retained in the wetland, while other alternatives are estimated to remove 0-33% of N and 0-40% of P. Productivity of the forested wetland will decrease by at least 20-50% over the next 50 years if nothing is done, but there would be a substantial increase in productivity if river water is diverted into the area. We recommend that a 45-55 m3/s diversion be placed in the southern portion of the swamps of Lake Maurepas and that the diversion be operated annually from winter to early spring. There are indications that a diversion in late summer and fall would be beneficial, as that is when salt pulses typically occur
Rydberg trimers and excited dimers bound by internal quantum reflection
Quantum reflection is a pure wave phenomena that predicts reflection of a
particle at a changing potential for cases where complete transmission occurs
classically. For a chemical bond, we find that this effect can lead to
non-classical vibrational turning points and bound states at extremely large
interatomic distances. Only recently has the existence of such ultralong-range
Rydberg molecules been demonstrated experimentally. Here, we identify a broad
range of molecular lines, most of which are shown to originate from two
different novel sources: a single-photon associated triatomic molecule formed
by a Rydberg atom and two ground state atoms and a series of excited dimer
states that are bound by a so far unexplored mechanism based on internal
quantum reflection at a steep potential drop. The properties of the Rydberg
molecules identified in this work qualify them as prototypes for a new type of

Irreversibility and Polymer Adsorption
Physisorption or chemisorption from dilute polymer solutions often entails
irreversible polymer-surface bonding. We present a theory of the
non-equilibrium layers which result. While the density profile and loop
distribution are the same as for equilibrium layers, the final layer comprises
a tightly bound inner part plus an outer part whose chains make only fN surface
contacts where N is chain length. The contact fractions f follow a broad
distribution, P(f) ~ f^{-4/5}, in rather close agreement with strong
