    Evidence for Factorization in Three-body BˉD()KK0\bar B\to D^{(*)} K^- K^0 Decays

    Motivated by experimental results on BˉD()KK0\bar B\to D^{(*)}K^-K^{0}, we use a factorization approach to study these decays. Two mechanisms concerning kaon pair production arise: current-produced (from vacuum) and transition (from the BB meson). The kaon pair in the Bˉ0D()+KK0\bar B {}^0\to D^{(*)+}K^-K^0 decays can be produced only by the vector current (current-produced), whose matrix element can be extracted from e+eKKˉe^+e^-\to K\bar K processes via isospin relations. The decay rates obtained this way are in good agreement with experiment. The BD()0KK0B^-\to D^{(*)0}K^-K^0 decays involve both current-produced and transition processes. By using QCD counting rules and the measured BD()0KK0B^-\to D^{(*)0} K^- K^0 decay rates, the measured decay spectra can be understood.Comment: 3 pages, 6 figures.     SummaryObjectiveLipocalin-2 (LCN2) is a recently characterized adipokine that is upregulated in chondrocytes treated with pro-inflammatory mediators and in the synovial fluid of osteoarthritis (OA) patients. Here, we explored the in vivo functions of LCN2 in OA cartilage destruction in mice.MethodsThe expression levels of LCN2 were determined at the mRNA and protein levels in primary cultured mouse chondrocytes and in human and mouse OA cartilage. Experimental OA was induced in wild-type (WT) or Lcn2-knockout (KO) mice by destabilization of the medial meniscus (DMM) or intra-articular (IA) injection of adenoviruses expressing hypoxia-inducible factor (HIF)-2α (Ad-Epas1), ZIP8 (Ad-Zip8), or LCN2 (Ad-Lcn2). The effect of LCN2 overexpression on the cartilage of WT mice was examined by IA injection of Ad-Lcn2.ResultsLCN2 mRNA levels in chondrocytes were markedly increased by the pro-inflammatory cytokines, interleukin (IL)-1β and tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α), and by previously identified catabolic regulators of OA, such as HIF-2α and components of the zinc-ZIP8-MTF1 axis. LCN2 protein levels were also markedly increased in human OA cartilage and cartilage from various experimental mouse models of OA. However, overexpression of LCN2 in chondrocytes did not modulate the expression of cartilage matrix molecules or matrix-degrading enzymes. Furthermore, LCN2 overexpression in mouse cartilage via IA injection of Ad-Lcn2 did not cause OA pathogenesis, and Lcn2 KO mice showed no alteration in DMM-induced OA cartilage destruction.ConclusionsOur observations collectively suggest that upregulation of LCN2 in OA cartilage is not sufficient or necessary for OA cartilage destruction in mice

    Horizontal divergence of typhoon-generated gravity waves in the upper troposphere and lower stratosphere (UTLS) and its influence on typhoon evolution

    The characteristics of horizontal divergence induced by typhoon-generated gravity waves (HDTGWs) and the influence of HDTGW on typhoon evolution are investigated based on the simulation results of Typhoon Saomai (2006) using the Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) model. The power spectral density of HDTGW shows dominant powers at horizontal wavelengths of 20–30 km and at periods of less than 1 h. This is associated with gravity waves generated by vigorous convective clouds in an inner core region of the typhoon. However, the domain-averaged HDTGW in the upper troposphere and lower stratosphere had a spectral peak at 24 h, which is well correlated with the minimum sea-level pressure of the typhoon, especially during a rapidly developing period. The 24 h period of the averaged HDTGW stems from the inertia–gravity waves generated by the convective clouds in the spiral rainbands, and showed no clear association with the thermal tides or the diurnal variation of precipitation

    Minimal dark matter in type III seesaw

    We explore the possibility of a new dark matter candidate in the supersymmetric type III seesaw mechanism where a neutral scalar component of the Y=0 triplet can be the lightest supersymmetric particle. Its thermal abundance can be in the right range if non-standard cosmology such as kination domination is assumed. The enhanced cross-section of the dark matter annihilation to W+W- can leave detectable astrophysical and cosmological signals whose current observational data puts a lower bound on the dark matter mass. The model predicts the existence of a charged scalar almost degenerate with the dark matter scalar and its lifetime lies between 5.5 cm and 6.3 m. It provides a novel opportunity of the dark mater mass measurement by identifying slowly-moving and highly-ionizing tracks in the LHC experiments. If the ordinary lightest supersymmetric particle is the usual Bino, its decay leads to clean signatures of same-sign di-lepton and di-charged-scalar associated with observable displaced vertices which are essentially background-free and can be fully reconstructed.Comment: 3 figures, 12 pages; An error in the antiproton limit corrected; the lower bound on the dark matter mass strengthened; references added; typos correcte

    Leaf-Encapsulated Vaccines: Agroinfiltration and Transient Expression of the Antigen Staphylococcal Endotoxin B in Radish Leaves.

    Transgene introgression is a major concern associated with transgenic plant-based vaccines. Agroinfiltration can be used to selectively transform nonreproductive organs and avoid introgression. Here, we introduce a new vaccine modality in which Staphylococcal enterotoxin B (SEB) genes are agroinfiltrated into radishes (Raphanw sativus L.), resulting in transient expression and accumulation of SEB in planta. This approach can simultaneously express multiple antigens in a single leaf. Furthermore, the potential of high-throughput vaccine production was demonstrated by simultaneously agroinfiltrating multiple radish leaves using a multichannel pipette. The expression of SEB was detectable in two leaf cell types (epidermal and guard cells) in agroinfiltrated leaves. ICR mice intranasally immunized with homogenized leaves agroinfiltrated with SEB elicited detectable antibody to SEB and displayed protection against SEB-induced interferon-gamma (IFN-γ) production. The concept of encapsulating antigens in leaves rather than purifying them for immunization may facilitate rapid vaccine production during an epidemic disease

    Evidence of metallic clustering in annealed Ga1-xMnxAs from atypical scaling behavior of the anomalous Hall coefficient

    We report on the anomalous Hall coefficient and longitudinal resistivity scaling relationships on a series of annealed Ga1-xMnxAs epilayers (x~0.055). As-grown samples exhibit scaling parameter n of ~ 1. Near the optimal annealing temperature, we find n ~ 2 to be consistent with recent theories on the intrinsic origins of anomalous Hall Effect in Ga1-xMnxAs. For annealing temperatures far above the optimum, we note n > 3, similar behavior to certain inhomogeneous systems. This observation of atypical behavior agrees well with characteristic features attributable to spherical resonance from metallic inclusions from optical spectroscopy measurements.Comment: 3 pages, 3 figure

    BRYNTRN: A baryon transport model

    The development of an interaction data base and a numerical solution to the transport of baryons through an arbitrary shield material based on a straight ahead approximation of the Boltzmann equation are described. The code is most accurate for continuous energy boundary values, but gives reasonable results for discrete spectra at the boundary using even a relatively coarse energy grid (30 points) and large spatial increments (1 cm in H2O). The resulting computer code is self-contained, efficient and ready to use. The code requires only a very small fraction of the computer resources required for Monte Carlo codes
