Near-deterministic quantum teleportation and resource-efficient quantum computation using linear optics and hybrid qubits
We propose a scheme to realize deterministic quantum teleportation using
linear optics and hybrid qubits. It enables one to efficiently perform
teleportation and universal linear-optical gate operations in a simple and
near-deterministic manner using all-optical hybrid entanglement as off-line
resources. Our analysis shows that our new approach can outperforms major
previous ones when considering both the resource requirements and fault
tolerance limits.Comment: 10 pages, 5 figures; extended version, title, abstract and figures

Does three-tangle properly quantify the three-party entanglement for Greenberger-Horne-Zeilinger-type states?
Some mixed states composed of only GHZ states can be expressed in terms of
only W-states. This fact implies that such states have vanishing three-tangle.
One of such rank-3 states, , is explicitly presented in this paper.
These results are used to compute analytically the three-tangle of a rank-4
mixed state composed of four GHZ states. This analysis with
considering Bloch sphere of qudit system allows us to derive the
hyper-polyhedron. It is shown that the states in this hyper-polyhedron have
vanishing three-tangle. Computing the one-tangles for and ,
we prove the monogamy inequality explicitly. Making use of the fact that the
three-tangle of is zero, we try to explain why the W-class in the
whole mixed states is not of measure zero contrary to the case of pure states.Comment: 10 pages, no figure V2: new calculational results are included. 11

An ammonia sensor based on Lossy Mode Resonances on a tapered optical fibre coated with porphyrin-incorporated titanium dioxide
The development of a highly sensitive ammonia sensor is described. The sensor is formed by deposition of a nanoscale coating of titanium dioxide, containing a porphyrin as a functional material, onto a tapered optical fibre. The titanium dioxide coating allows coupling of light from the fundamental core mode to a lossy mode supported by the coating, thus creating a Lossy Mode Resonance (LMR) in the transmission spectrum. A change in the refractive index of the coating caused by the interaction of the porphyrin with ammonia causes a change in the centre wavelength of the LMR, allowing concentrations of ammonia in water as low as 0.1 ppm to be detected, with a response time of less than 30 s
Ammonia sensing using lossy mode resonances in a tapered optical fibre coated with porphyrin-incorporated titanium dioxide
The development of an ammonia sensor, formed by the deposition of a functionalised titanium dioxide film onto a tapered optical fibre is presented. The titanium dioxide coating allows the coupling of light from the fundamental core mode to a lossy mode supported by the coating, thus creating lossy mode resonance (LMR) in the transmission spectrum. The porphyrin compound that was used to functionalise the coating was removed from the titanium dioxide coating upon exposure to ammonia, causing a change in the refractive index of the coating and a concomitant shift in the central wavelength of the lossy mode resonance. Concentrations of ammonia as small as 1ppm was detected with a response time of less than 1min. © (2016) COPYRIGHT Society of Photo-Optical Instrumentation Engineers (SPIE). Detection of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) using an optical fibre long period grating with a calixarene anchored mesoporous thin film
A long period grating (LPG) modified with a mesoporous film infused with a functional compound, calix[4]arene, was employed for the detection of volatile organic compounds (VOCs). The mesoporous film consisted of an inorganic part, of SiO2 nanoparticles (NPs) along with an organic moiety of poly(allylamine hydrochloride) polycation PAH, which was finally infused with functional compound, p-sulphanatocalix[4]arene (CA[4]). The LPG sensor was designed to operate at the phase matching turning point to provide the highest sensitivity. The sensing mechanism is based on the measurement of the refractive index (RI) change induced by the complexion of the VOCs with calix[4]arene (CA). The LPG modified with 5 cycles of (SiO2 NPs/PAH)5PAA responded to exposure to chloroform and benzene vapours. The sensitivity to humidity as an interfering parameter was also investigated
Fiber-diffraction Interferometer using Coherent Fiber Optic Taper
We present a fiber-diffraction interferometer using a coherent fiber optic
taper for optical testing in an uncontrolled environment. We use a coherent
fiber optic taper and a single-mode fiber having thermally-expanded core. Part
of the measurement wave coming from a test target is condensed through a fiber
optic taper and spatially filtered from a single-mode fiber to be reference
wave. Vibration of the cavity between the target and the interferometer probe
is common to both reference and measurement waves, thus the interference fringe
is stabilized in an optical way. Generation of the reference wave is stable
even with the target movement. Focus shift of the input measurement wave is
desensitized by a coherent fiber optic taper
Liquid-like behaviour of gold nanowire bridges
A combination of Focused Ion Beam (FIB) and Reactive Ion Etch (RIE) was used to fabricate free standing gold nanowire bridges with radii of 30 nm and below. These were subjected to point loading to failure at their mid-points using an Atomic Force Microscope (AFM), providing strength and deformation data. The results demonstrate a dimensionally dependent transition from conventional solid metallic properties to liquid-like behaviour including the unexpected reformation of a fractured bridge. The work reveals mechanical and materials properties of nanowires which could have significant impact on nanofabrication processes and nanotechnology devices such as Nano Electro Mechanical Systems (NEMS)
