    The Effelsberg-Bonn HI Survey (EBHIS)

    The new L-band 7-feed-array at the 100-m telescope in Effelsberg will be used to perform an unbiased fully sampled HI survey of the entire northern hemisphere observing the galactic and extragalactic sky using simultaneously two different backends. The survey will be extremely valuable for a broad range of research topics: study of the low-mass end of the HI mass function (HIMF) in the local volume, environmental and evolutionary effects (as seen in the HIMF), the search for galaxies near low-redshift Lyman-alpha absorbers, and analysis of multiphase and extraplanar gas, HI shells, and ultra-compact high-velocity-clouds.Comment: 2 pages, 1 figure, to appear in proceeding of "Galaxies in the Local Volume" Sydney 8-13 July 200

    Ontogeny modifies the effects of water stress on stomatal control, leaf area duration and biomass partitioning of Pennisetum glaucum

    International audience• Experiments are presented that test the relative importance, during ontogeny, of stomatal control and leaf area expansion to optimum seasonal water use in pearl millet (Pennisetum glaucum). These parameters play a key role in the compromise between plant growth and water saving under unpredictable conditions of semiarid environments. • The response of growth and water use of crops to successive 15 d drought periods was measured under field conditions in Niger (West Africa). • From emergence to anthesis, biomass partitioning to stems and panicles depended strongly on leaf area development. Water use was linearly related to green leaf area duration in well watered plots, but was reduced proportionally more than green leaf area in drought-affected plots. The relations of crop growth rate and transpiration efficiency to leaf area depended on ontogenetic changes in biomass partitioning. • In P. glaucum , stomata play a dominant role in reducing crop water use under preanthesis drought, although this control becomes negligible after anthesis because of ontogenetic decline in the range of stomatal conductance. The rate of leaf senescence after anthesis is not drought-dependent

    The Effelsberg-Bonn HI Survey: Data reduction

    Starting in winter 2008/2009 an L-band 7-Feed-Array receiver is used for a 21-cm line survey performed with the 100-m telescope, the Effelsberg-Bonn HI survey (EBHIS). The EBHIS will cover the whole northern hemisphere for decl.>-5 deg comprising both the galactic and extragalactic sky out to a distance of about 230 Mpc. Using state-of-the-art FPGA-based digital fast Fourier transform spectrometers, superior in dynamic range and temporal resolution to conventional correlators, allows us to apply sophisticated radio frequency interference (RFI) mitigation schemes. In this paper, the EBHIS data reduction package and first results are presented. The reduction software consists of RFI detection schemes, flux and gain-curve calibration, stray-radiation removal, baseline fitting, and finally the gridding to produce data cubes. The whole software chain is successfully tested using multi-feed data toward many smaller test fields (1--100 square degrees) and recently applied for the first time to data of two large sky areas, each covering about 2000 square degrees. The first large area is toward the northern galactic pole and the second one toward the northern tip of the Magellanic Leading Arm. Here, we demonstrate the data quality of EBHIS Milky Way data and give a first impression on the first data release in 2011.Comment: 17 pages, 14 figures; to be published in ApJ

    Disgust implicated in obsessive-compulsive disorder

    Psychiatric classificatory systems consider obsessions and compulsions as forms of anxiety disorder. However, the neurology of diseases associated with obsessive-compulsive symptoms suggests the involvement of fronto-striatal regions likely to be involved in the mediation of the emotion of disgust, suggesting that dysfunctions of disgust should be considered alongside anxiety in the pathogenesis of obsessive-compulsive behaviours. We therefore tested recognition of facial expressions of basic emotions (including disgust) by groups of participants with obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) and with Gilles de la Tourette's syndrome (GTS) with and without co-present obsessive-compulsive behaviours (GTS with OCB; GTS without OCB). A group of people suffering from panic disorder and generalized anxiety were also included in the study. Both groups with obsessive-compulsive symptoms (OCD; GTS with OCB) showed impaired recognition of facial expressions of disgust. Such problems were not evident in participants with panic disorder and generalized anxiety, or for participants with GTS without obsessions or compulsions, indicating that the deficit is closely related to the presence of obsessive-compulsive symptoms. Participants with OCD were able to assign words to emotion categories without difficulty, showing that their problem with disgust is linked to a failure to recognize this emotion in others and not a comprehension or response criterion effect. Impaired recognition of disgust is consistent with the neurology of OCD and with the idea that abnormal experience of disgust may be involved in the genesis of obsessions and compulsions

    Benchmarking CPUs and GPUs on embedded platforms for software receiver usage

    Smartphones containing multi-core central processing units (CPUs) and powerful many-core graphics processing units (GPUs) bring supercomputing technology into your pocket (or into our embedded devices). This can be exploited to produce power-efficient, customized receivers with flexible correlation schemes and more advanced positioning techniques. For example, promising techniques such as the Direct Position Estimation paradigm or usage of tracking solutions based on particle filtering, seem to be very appealing in challenging environments but are likewise computationally quite demanding. This article sheds some light onto recent embedded processor developments, benchmarks Fast Fourier Transform (FFT) and correlation algorithms on representative embedded platforms and relates the results to the use in GNSS software radios. The use of embedded CPUs for signal tracking seems to be straight forward, but more research is required to fully achieve the nominal peak performance of an embedded GPU for FFT computation.     Amorphous ice: Stepwise formation of very-high-density amorphous ice from low-density amorphous ice at 125 K

    On compressing low-density amorphous ice (LDA) at 125 K up to 1.6 GPa, two distinct density steps accompanied by heat evolution are observable in pressure-density curves. Samples recovered to 77 K and 1 bar after the first and second steps show the x-ray diffraction pattern of high-density amorphous ice (HDA) and very HDA (VHDA), respectively. The compression of the once formed HDA takes place linearly in density up to 0.95 GPa, where nonlinear densification and HDA -> VHDA conversion is initiated. This implies a stepwise formation process LDA -> HDA -> VHDA at 125 K, which is to the best of our knowledge the first observation of a stepwise amorphous-amorphous-amorphous transformation sequence. We infer that the relation of HDA and VHDA is very similar to the relation between LDA and HDA except for a higher activation barrier between the former.
