Research Notes: A technique for evaluating nodulation response of soybean genotypes with specific Rhizobium strains
Previous research on the interactions of Rhizobium strains with host cultivars has involved the testing of small numbers of plants with a specific strain of Rhizobium in Leonard jar assemblies (Leonard, 1943). The Leonard jar technique in our greenhouse requires frequent watering (up to twice daily) and periodic adjustment of the wick element. We have found the traditional Leonard jar assembly technique inadequate to efficiently accommodate the large plant populations required in plant selection and genetic studies of allelism and linkage
Clustering Memes in Social Media
The increasing pervasiveness of social media creates new opportunities to
study human social behavior, while challenging our capability to analyze their
massive data streams. One of the emerging tasks is to distinguish between
different kinds of activities, for example engineered misinformation campaigns
versus spontaneous communication. Such detection problems require a formal
definition of meme, or unit of information that can spread from person to
person through the social network. Once a meme is identified, supervised
learning methods can be applied to classify different types of communication.
The appropriate granularity of a meme, however, is hardly captured from
existing entities such as tags and keywords. Here we present a framework for
the novel task of detecting memes by clustering messages from large streams of
social data. We evaluate various similarity measures that leverage content,
metadata, network features, and their combinations. We also explore the idea of
pre-clustering on the basis of existing entities. A systematic evaluation is
carried out using a manually curated dataset as ground truth. Our analysis
shows that pre-clustering and a combination of heterogeneous features yield the
best trade-off between number of clusters and their quality, demonstrating that
a simple combination based on pairwise maximization of similarity is as
effective as a non-trivial optimization of parameters. Our approach is fully
automatic, unsupervised, and scalable for real-time detection of memes in

Evaluating Terrain for Harvesting Equipment Selection
A terrain evaluation model, utilizing a geographic information system, has been developed as a tool for planning large-scale industrial timber harvesting operations. The model combines terrain descriptions with machine operating criteria to produce maps delineating operable areas. The integration of the model with a harvest planning decision support system is discussed and an example is presented
Epitaxy and magnetotransport of Sr_2FeMoO_6 thin films
By pulsed-laser deposition epitaxial thin films of Sr_2FeMoO_6 have been pre-
pared on (100) SrTiO_3 substrates. Already for a deposition temperature of 320
C epitaxial growth is achieved. Depending on deposition parameters the films
show metallic or semiconducting behavior. At high (low) deposition temperature
the Fe,Mo sublattice has a rock-salt (random) structure. The metallic samples
have a large negative magnetoresistance which peaks at the Curie temperature.
The magnetic moment was determined to 4 mu_B per formula unit (f.u.), in
agreement with the expected value for an ideal ferrimagnetic arrangement. We
found an ordinary Hall coefficient of -6.01x10^{-10} m^3/As at 300 K,
corresponding to an electronlike charge-carrier density of 1.3 per Fe,Mo-pair.
In the semiconducting films the magnetic moment is reduced to 1 mu_B/f.u. due
to disorder in the Fe,Mo sublattice. In low fields an anomalous holelike
contribution dominates the Hall voltage, which vanishes at low temperatures for

The Cinchona Primary Amine-Catalyzed Asymmetric Epoxidation and Hydroperoxidation of α,ÎČ-Unsaturated Carbonyl Compounds with Hydrogen Peroxide
Using cinchona alkaloid-derived primary amines as catalysts and aqueous hydrogen peroxide as the oxidant, we have developed highly enantioselective WeitzâScheffer-type epoxidation and hydroperoxidation reactions of α,ÎČ-unsaturated carbonyl compounds (up to 99.5:0.5 er). In this article, we present our full studies on this family of reactions, employing acyclic enones, 5â15-membered cyclic enones, and α-branched enals as substrates. In addition to an expanded scope, synthetic applications of the products are presented. We also report detailed mechanistic investigations of the catalytic intermediates, structureâactivity relationships of the cinchona amine catalyst, and rationalization of the absolute stereoselectivity by NMR spectroscopic studies and DFT calculations
Habitat-based density models of pack-ice seal distribution in the southern Weddell Sea, Antarctica
Climate variability and changes in sea ice dynamics have caused several ice-obligate or krill-dependent populations of marine predators to decline, eliciting concern about their demographic persistence and the indirect ecological consequences that predator depletions may have on marine ecosystems. Pack-ice seals are dominant ice-obligate predators in the Antarctic marine ecosystem, but there is considerable uncertainty about their abundance and population trends. We modelled the density and distribution of pack-ice seals as a function of environmental covariates in the southern Weddell Sea, Antarctica. Our density surface modelling approach used data from aerial surveys of pack-ice seals collected in the 2013/14 austral summer. Crabeater seals Lobo don carcinophaga, the most numerous pack-ice seal we observed, occurred at the highest densities in areas with extensive sea ice near the continental shelf break, but were almost absent in areas of similar sea ice concentration in the southern extent of the Weddell Sea. The highest densities of Weddell seals Leptonychotes weddelli, which were less abundant than crabeater seals within the pack-ice habitat, were predicted to occur over the continental shelf, near the shelf break. The distribution of both seal species broadly corresponded with the distribution and relative abundance of their main prey (Antarctic krill Euphausia superba and Antarctic silverfish Pleuragramma antarctica) obtained from concurrent ecosystem surveys. Ross seals Ommatophoca rossii and leopard seals Hydrurga leptonyx were not detected at all and are apparently rare within the southern Weddell Sea. These results can contribute to biodiversity assessments in the context of marine protected area planning in this region of the Southern Ocean
An ellipsoidal mirror for focusing neutral atomic and molecular beams
Manipulation of atomic and molecular beams is essential to atom optics applications including atom lasers, atom lithography, atom interferometry and neutral atom microscopy. The manipulation of charge-neutral beams of limited polarizability, spin or excitation states remains problematic, but may be overcome by the development of novel diffractive or reflective optical elements. In this paper, we present the first experimental demonstration of atom focusing using an ellipsoidal mirror. The ellipsoidal mirror enables stigmatic off-axis focusing for the first time and we demonstrate focusing of a beam of neutral, ground-state helium atoms down to an approximately circular spot, (26.8±0.5) ÎŒmĂ(31.4±0.8) ÎŒm in size. The spot area is two orders of magnitude smaller than previous reflective focusing of atomic beams and is a critical milestone towards the construction of a high-intensity scanning helium microscope
